Message From Our Principal/CEO December 1, 2014

Dear Parents,

We’re closing in on the completion of the first semester. Exams are slated for December 15-17. Please make sure that your child(ren) is present.

You’ve been informed of our intervention program, I-Ready, that has been implemented to aid our students in grades K-8 in reading and mathematics. Be reminded that this program can be utilized at home, as well as at school. Students usernames and passwords have been issued to them. Younger students may need assistance logging on–but our older students are quite capable. Parents needing

passwords and usernames can request them from your child’s teachers.

Cost of Internet Service can be quite expensive. Cox Communications has recently informed me that they are offering high speed service for as little as $9.95 per month for families who have a child receiving free lunch. There are certain requirements, of course. Additional information regarding this offering can be found on page 9 of this newsletter. Maybe a home computer will be in your family’s future with affordable Internet service available.

Here’s hoping you and your family have a joyful holiday season. See you next year!

–Mrs. K. Batiste, Principal

Warriors always follow the 4Ps . . . They are prompt, polite, prepared, and productive each day. Please review the school’s Students Code of Conduct & the Warrior Way in the 2014-2015 issue of the Family Handbook (pgs. 20, 21-26) ###

Send any changes to your home address, phone numbers, emergency contacts, etc. to your child’s homeroom teacher immediately. The teacher will pass it on to the ISC. Thanks. ###

All monies owed to the school regarding World’s Finest

Chocolate is past due! Please see Mrs. B. Watson to make

payments. Thanks for helping in our fund

raising endeavor.

The only exception to the attendance regulation shall be extenuating circumstances that are verified by the school’s administration (see pg. 2 of the Family Handbook for additional information.) ###

Free Smoke Detectors Available in New Orleans

Free smoke detectors are available for any resident of Orleans parish in need. The New Orleans Fire Department is putting the word out after the death of five members of an uptown family on Monday, November 10th.

Firefighters believe the tragedy could have been prevented if the home in the Broadmoor section of town had working smoke detectors installed. The free smoke detectors program in New Orleans began in 2013. It was started with assisting the elderly and other people in need. A grant from the Louisiana State Fire Marshall’s office and private donations supplies NOFD with 10 year smoke detectors. Firefighters will even install them when they are not dealing with emergencies. The detectors cost about

$5.00 each. Residents of Orleans can receive up to two detectors per residence. These units will last 10 years and the batteries should be checked monthly and replaced yearly. Firefighters will even replace the batteries for the elderly or physically challenged individuals.

To get a free smoke detector call 504.685.4714 or fill out the online form at www.nola.gov/nofd/citizen-services/free smoke-detector-installation/. A fireman will call to make arrangements for installation.

Thanks to Mrs. K. LeBlanc for suggesting this article for the WN. ###

Troop 41296 Leads Giving Effort PBS Team Supplies Gift Cards

Troop Leaders Barnett, Henry, and Ducros and their 25+ members of Fannie’s Girl Scout Troop once again collected hundreds of nonperishable food items to make six (6) Thanksgiving baskets for needy families in our community. This marks the second year the scout troop has lead the effort.

In past years, the Student Council, under the direction of speech pathologist Mrs. L. McCray, gave baskets to families in need. Also our PBS Team (spearheaded by staff member Ms. S. Theard), were part of the earliest group to give back to our learning community. FCWCS’s service to families in need goes back more than 1/2 dozen years.

Homerooms were asked to participate by bringing in everything from cans of peas, corn, candied yams and monetary donations. Troop Leader Barnett wishes to thank all students (and their parents) who donated to this cause. ###

The Job’s Not Finished Yet . . .

VOTE December 6th–Your VOICE is Needed

On the ballot Saturday, December 6th are important decisions that have yet to be resolved.

Voters are asked to finish the task started in November. In Louisiana we will decide on the Louisiana U.S. Senate Seat––Landrieu vs. Cassidy. There is also the hotly contested Public

Service Commissioner for District 1 Race––Skrmetta vs. Wright; Ahern vs. Barial for Judge in Orleans Parish Civil District Court (Family Court); the search for a judge for Orleans Parish Juvenile pits Charbonnet vs. Cook-Calvin; and there is a race that is important to all citizens with a stake in education

(of course that’s all of us)–Orleans Parish School Board Property Tax.

Proponents of the tax have outlined the use of the 4.97 mill tax (already in place to pay down) to provide all schools with a facility maintenance preservation plan. Almost $2 billion has been spent in rebuilding school facilities since Hurricane Katrina. None of this money

can be used for maintenance or repairs. The influx of federal monies is coming to an end and these schools will have to be maintained for future students and staff for many years to come.

We need all our parents to go out and vote on Saturday,

December 6th. Whatever your choice, your viewpoint counts! ###

I-Ready Proving to Be Effective Tool Recent Diagnostic Has Indicated Jumps in Achievement

Our last month’s issue cover story of WN told of the school’s efforts to enhance student achievement in the core area of reading and mathematics. Students who are able to achieve in these two areas will usually find success in other areas of studies.

To achieve this, the school’s administration purchased a license for I-Ready Diagnostic and Instruction, an online program to improve reading and math skills for students in grades K-8. The program provides action plans for teachers and delivers differentiated online instruction to students. Recent diagnostic testing has indicated that “80% of our scholars have increased

their scores,” according to CAO Williams. Middle school is presently showing the greatest gains.

Parents of students who are not developing as they should will be notified of their problems.

Certificates and award pencils were issued to students showing improvement

Parents are reminded that students with a computer and the Internet at home are able to access the lessons in reading and mathematics. Students have been notified of their usernames and passwords. ###

Band Director Petit, Sick Leave Thaddeus Petit, FCWCS’s band director since 2011, has gone on medical leave, effective immediately.

Petit, an US Army veteran will be out for an undisclosed amount of time. He will be replaced by his assistant Dedric Jones. Taylor Holt and Stephen Goodly, both current staff members will continue to work with our musicians to ensure a smooth transition into the Mardi Gras marching season.

Petit is a former member of the Marching 100 of St. Augustine HS. Jones played music at Fortier HS, Goodly earned his musical “chops” at McDonogh No. 35 and Holt was a member of the XU Prep Marching Band. Our musicians are in good hands

We wish Mr. Petit a speedy recovery and hope to have him back soon. ###

Since September 2011, Thaddeus Petit (above) has been instrumental in putting together a marching band that has garnered notice. Our middle school band and auxiliary units are requested for carnival parades and community events alike. Jones will continue in this direction with our marching band.
