Five Cloud Trends for 2015  Do you have a strategy for capitalizing on cloud computing? What about your data center modernization plans? Are you factoring in cloud trends?  According to Gartner, a strong and regularly updated cloud computing strategy will be essential to enterprises to avoid costly mistakes and missed opportunities. Vice President and Gartner Fellow David Clearly explains:  Cloud computing is a major technology trend that has permeated the market over the last two years. It sets the stage for a new approach to IT that enables individuals and businesses to choose how they'll acquire or deliver IT services, with reduced emphasis on the constraints of traditional software and hardware licensing models. Cloud computing has a significant potential impact on every aspect of IT and how users access applications, information and business services.

 Gartner offered up five trends that enterprises need to be aware of through 2015, which will affect how they make informed IT decisions. Here’s a recap:  

1. Formal decision frameworks facilitate cloud investment optimization. Sounds like something that the IT Jargon Generator would state, but what Gartner is saying here is simply that to make the most of any cloud computing investment you need to consider how the cloud impacts a number of IT areas including security, lack of transparency, application performance and availability, possible vendor lock­in, licensing constraints, and IT integration needs. Cloud computing can be wide­reaching in terms of its impact on your IT environment so you need to consider all the areas in which it touches. 

 2. Hybrid cloud computing is an imperative. We’ve blogged before on the benefits of 

the hybrid cloud computing model for organizations that are concerned about data security and scalability, and Gartner also thinks a hybrid model is sound. They believe that enterprises should establish guidelines and standards for how external cloud 

services (public or private) should combine with internal systems to form this hybrid cloud environment, and we believe this is sound advice. 

 3. Cloud services brokerages (CSBs) will facilitate cloud consumption. As 

evidenced by the questions and challenges our clients are faced with when it comes to implementing smart cloud computing solutions we also think CSBs will continue to grow. 

 4. Cloud­centric design becomes a necessity. Gartner suggests that enterprises look 

beyond the migration of workloads to the creation of cloud­optimized applications that make the most of the potential the cloud can provide. The more cloud computing solutions affect the organization as a whole, the more complex decisions becomes. Placing existing applications in the cloud, versus replacing applications with new cloud­driven solutions, are two completely different decisions with different enterprise­level implications. 

 5. Cloud computing influences future data center and operational models. Any data 

center modernization effort needs to factor in cloud computing solutions. How does the use of any public cloud services impact your data center? The cloud can help your data center (and IT organization in general) increase agility and efficiency, but some legacy data center elements may be hampering this goal. Application Mapping may be a necessary first step in achieving cloud nirvana. 

 The cloud continues to proliferate and make inroads in most enterprises, but that’s not to say that most have it completely figured out. As we roll into 2015, these five trends Gartner has tabled will certainly continue to play out.
