U.S. News & World Report ranked seven of FIU’s graduate programs - among them international business (15), nursing (54), public affairs (67) and occupational therapy (69) - within the top 100 on its list of the Best Graduate Schools 2016.

The Obama administration recognized FIU as a top institution for providing accessible, affordable education to lower-income students.

FIU ranked second in Florida on the Forbes 500 list of America’s Best Employers, first among the state’s educational institutions and 34th among all employers nationally.

The U.S. State Department recognized FIU as a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars for 2015-2016.

Joining the highest rank of research institutionsFIU has moved into the top category of research universities in the United States as announced by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In its new edition of classifications, the foundation placed FIU among the institutions engaged in “Highest Research Activity.” Only two percent of universities have attained the status.

The achievement recognizes FIU’s growth in key areas, among them an increase in the enrollment of students in research-based Ph.D. programs, an increase in dollars spent to conduct research and an increase in the number of faculty who hold research grants from foundations, government agencies and other sources outside of the university.

Campus a stage for Shakespeare exhibition

FIU’s Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum was the only site in Florida to host a nearly 400-year-old first edition of William Shakespeare’s collected works. As part of the Folger Library’s national traveling exhibition First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare, the rare volume of Shakespeare’s plays was on display in 2016 in just one location per state, as well in Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, to mark the 400th

anniversary of the Bard’s death. FIU had successfully vied for the honor with other Florida institutions.

In addition to providing guided tours of the exhibit to thousands of schoolchildren, the university created a dynamic, month-long schedule of arts and academic programming that included performances, film screenings, public lectures, a scholarly conference and a family day.

FIU has been recognized as a leader in fostering opportunities to help students impact the world. FIU was chosen to join the prestigious Ashoka U Changemaker Campus consortium, a group of 35 colleges and universities globally that have embedded social innovation as a core value and share a vision of higher education as the next driver of social change.

As part of the rigorous selection process, Ashoka U looked at FIU’s existing social innovation ecosystem, including its award-winning Global Learning for Global Citizenship curriculum, and its commitment to uniting students, faculty, alumni and the community to address complex 21st century problems such as sea level rise.

Reaffirming FIU’s commitment to serving as a community solutions center, the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences took the lead in a collaborative efforts to open a health clinic at a high school in inner-city Miami. Working with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, a youth social services organization and a local community health center, the college secured a $1.45 million grant to operate the facility after school and on Saturdays.

FIU provides the team of certified nurse practitioners who offer preventive care, vaccines, flu shots and health screenings at Miami Northwestern High School to children and families, including those associated with nearby primary schools as well as other residents of the local community.

An FIU professor’s research earned a place on Discover magazine’s list of top 100 science stories of 2015. A groundbreaking nanotechnology procedure directed by Sakhrat Khizroev, who holds dual appointments in the College of Engineering and Computing and the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, earned spot no. 48 on a comprehensive listing that covers fields from space exploration to medicine, technology, paleontology and environment. The selections were made from hundreds of thousands of peer-reviewed articles published in scientific journals.

In a study with potentially huge implications for medical treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, Khizroev and his team used nanoparticles to wirelessly connect the brain of a living mouse to a computer. The researchers then sent commands to the brain’s neurons to “pulse,” which resulted in deep brain stimulation, a type of medical treatment that has traditionally required invasive surgery.

The annual South Beach Wine and Food Festival presented by FOOD & WINE draws thousands of visitors from throughout the country and internationally to Miami Beach. The February event gives as many as 1,300 students in the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management unprecedented opportunities to learn from and network with top industry professionals.

Students, all of them enrolled in business management tracks geared to the hospitality and tourism sectors, help produce the week of dinners, tastings and other gatherings during one of the country’s most popular wine and food festivals, which over the years has raised more than $22 million for scholarships and academic programs. Working alongside professional organizers, sponsors representing top food and beverage brands, and Food Network chefs and personalities who have built empires around their talents, students make important connections and, in many cases, gain access to career opportunities.

During the fall of 2015, oceanographer David Kadko led the U.S. contingent of an international research expedition. The FIU professor is the chief scientist for the ongoing multimillion-dollar U.S. Arctic GEOTRACES initiative. As part of his duties, he directed 51 scientists, students and technicians aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Healy, an icebreaker from which the team collected field samples that will help provide the most comprehensive understanding of the Arctic Ocean’s chemical composition.

The initiative is part of an historic, first-of-its-kind international, collaborative effort between the United States, Canada, Germany and scientists from several other nations. Read more at arctic.fiu.edu.

FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg and his wife Rosalie have announced a $1 million donation to FIU for first-generation scholarships. News of the gift came at the launch of the university’s annual faculty and staff campaign, called Ignite, which encourages employees to contribute to university initiatives of their choice.

The Rosenbergs have chosen to support a fund that provides scholarships to students who represent the first in their families to pursue a college degree. At FIU more than 50 percent of students fall within that category. The couple are the proud parents of FIU alumni Ben and Ginelle. Learn more at firstgen.fiu.edu.

Nearly 250 innovators from colleges and universities across the country spent three days whipping up more than 30 tech projects as part of MangoHacks, a hackathon organized and led by FIU students.

Over three days, young people with majors such as engineering, design, data science and marketing together created a variety of projects, among them several different apps, a size-adjusting prosthetic leg and a role-playing game that teaches foreign languages. It all took place in FIU’s Tech Station, a digital maker space equipped with the latest technology and featuring interactive room and furniture configurations to foster collaboration.
