FIU-Miami Creative City Initiative
Year 2 Review September 2015-August 2016
Creativity (n): the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations
FIU and the Creative Class Group have joined forces to launch the FIU-Miami Creative City Initiative, a project to harness creative and entrepreneurial forces that can help accelerate greater Miami’s transformation into a creative economy.

FIU Meetings and Events 2015 August-Nov. 2015 Art Basel Event and Student Engagement Planning by CCG Team. December 3, 2015 Student Engagement Interviews held by Steven Pedigo on main campus. December 3, 2015 Art Basel-The Creative City Event- CCG Team at Miami Beach Urban Studio. 2016 January 13, 2016 Richard delivered keynote at Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Economic Summit in Miami. January 21, 2016 Richard, Rana and Steven met with Brian to discuss year 2 plans and spring event. January 21, 2016 Steven led first student engagement meetings/sessions on main campus.
FIU Meetings and Events Continued January 22, 2016 Creative Class Group led State of Innovation at FIU - roundtables (with Provost Ken Furton, Emily Gresham and others)-facilitated by Steven. January 27, 2016 Rana strategy advising on the Conference on the Status of Women in Journalism at the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communications- met with Dr. Kopenhaver, Lillian Abreu, Lisa Merritt and Kristin Bird. February 1, 2016 Richard and Ken Lipartito, Professor of History met at MBUS-to exchange ideas NEH New Next Generation PhD Planning Grant application-serve on Advisory Board. February 10, 2016 Richard assisted Ken Lipartito with NEH New Next Generation PhD Planning Grant application-serve on Advisory Board. February 23, 2016 Richard joined class to discuss The Creative Class at MBUS with Kenneth Lipartito, Professor of History.

February 25, 2016 Steven led Student Engagement Sessions -Why Creative Cities Matter coordinated through David Rifkind-20-30 students at PSA Building on campus. February 26, 2016 Richard, Rana and Steven meeting with President Rosenberg and Brian Schriner to discuss unveiling report event –on campus. March 1-2, 2016 Richard and Steven conducted focus group sessions at Beacon Council for Research Report. Total of 7 sessions with key community members over course of 2 days to examine the challenges and opportunities of greater Miami’s creative economy. March 16, 2016 Richard and Brian, development meeting with Moishe Mana and Mr. Finger at Wynwood to discuss making MANA the home of the FIU- Creative Class Group Miami Research Initiative . March 23, 2016 Richard second development and planning meeting with Brian and Moishe Mana at Wynwood.

for the Creative Age Innovation Report Roundtable Discussions

CCG conducted a series of 4 focus group roundtables on campus over the course of April and May 2015. Participants included FIU faculty, staff, administrators, students and stakeholders. From these discussions, CCG developed a whitepaper with a series of recommendations for bolstering FIU’s Innovative Ecosystem: • Rebrand FIU as one invested in research and innovation • Develop students for the Creative Age • Build cross-sector partnerships that will catalyze innovation • Update policies related to tenure and tech transfer to support innovation in the
Creative Age • Align resources to coordinate FIU’s efforts around entrepreneurship and tech transfer • Measure and communicate FIU’s impact on Miami’s creative economy

Why Creative Cities and Matter. Cities are our greatest invention and expression of human civilization. They are the key social and economic organizing units of our time, clustering together people, jobs, and all the inputs required for economic growth. Steven Pedigo led discussions about why cities matter to competitiveness and how design can foster clustering in our future. Event facilitated through David Rifkind, Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Students held at the College of Architecture + the Arts.

Greater Miami’s Creative Economy Research Study CCG conducted a study to understand Miami’s creative assets and cultural impact on the region. In the study, we examined in great detail Greater Miami’s talent base, brain drain and talent-based advantages. Our quantitative analysis was supported by interviews and roundtable discussions with regional business executives, nonprofit leaders and economic development professionals. This research report served as as the foundation for the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Goals Conference.
