What is a fissure volcano?

• It is a volcano that is a long crack(fissure) in the earth.

• Magma erupts from it, it usually explodes straight up in the air as lava fountains.

• These fissures may form as 2 tectonic plates diverge from each other.

The Eruption

• A vast amount of liquid lava shoots and spreads far and wide.

• It forms a pool of lava.• When it cools down and becomes flat.

Where? When? & How?

• Where: They appear at hotspots or at spreading ridges.

• When: A dome of lava rises to less than 10 kilometers under the surface of the earth.

• How: A fissure typically resides along a fault produced when tensional stress results in the subsidence of a block of rock.

After Eruption

• Drainback: When lava which has erupted returns to the ground by going into a crack or an erupted fissure.

Example of Fissure Volcano

• The Laki volcano in Iceland was one of the most notable fissure volcanoes around the world.

• On June 8th, 1783 the Laki volcano erupted with 130 craters, caused by groundwater interacting with rising Basalt magma.

• The Laki volcano in Iceland is  currently dormant.

• The Laki volcano produced pahoehoe lava.

Questions

• 1: There is approximately 1500 active volcanoes in the world

• 2: It decreases global temperature because when volcanoes erupt the ash is blocking the heat from getting into the atmosphere enabling it to cool down.

• 3: It could increase it by not producing ash which wouldn’t stop the sun’s rays from getting into the atmosphere.
