Fantastic fishing

Paths are signposted, rest huts built and wind shelters and fireplaces prepared. Boats are available to rent in many places. Here, it’s never far to fantastic fishing. Often it’s just a short walk from where you park your car. In our fishing waters there are also Put & Take ponds where trout and char are planted. There the perfect beginners’ and family fishing awaits – with good chances for the fish to bite! The fishing guide will show you the way to your fishing paradise. Exciting game fishing can be found in our easily accessible lakes, ponds and streams. Everything is nestled among forests, wilderness and alpine nature. Here there are fishing opportunities for the whole family. Naturally, even for the most advanced and discerning of anglers.

For all anglers, fishing in the clean and fresh waters of the region is an experience not to be missed. Here there’s fish of natural quality. Fishing luck requires neither exclusive gear nor advanced skills. Our guide will give you valuable advice. The local fish conservation associations work hard to look after the fish and fishing waters to make fishing accessible to all.

The way to your best fishing

GraylinGThe delicious grayling can be fished all summer long. It feels most at home in flowing, oxygen-rich waters and can be found from all the way up in the mountains to down in the woodlands. The grayling is not so shy, it surface feeds and often waits in watch. It can often be found in calm pools or where a stream flows in or out from a larger pool. It is not so picky about what it eats and it’s possible to getclose. Fishing with spinners can yield great results.

TrouTThis sly fellow needs fresh, clean waters. That’s why it’s most com-monly found – in flowing streams, rivers and brooks, pools and lakes. The shy trout must be sneaked up on, using trees and bushes as cover. It can see well and feels the slightest vibrations. The trout bites most bait. Fly-fishing is the most common, but spinners also work. Spin fishing with a wobbler can yield truly giant catches.

WhiTefishWhitefish feels most at home in inland lakes, but also hunts in calmer sections of flowing waters. It can be found all the way up to thetreeline. The whitefish is a diligent watcher and the rings on the surface give it away. The whitefish is a good ”beginner’s fish”, as its not so easily frightened as, for example, char. And sine it east both insects and predatory fish, it can be caught with both fly and spinner.

CharThis beauty must be every alpine angler’s dream catch. It can be found in nearly every mountain lake and some forest lakes – but isshy and hard to lure. And in summer it’s even more cunning thanusual. The best time is around midsummer, when the char’s favourite dragon-fly hatches. That’s when it’s really on the watch. Fly fishers should use small flies with normal tackle and spin fishing also works.

PikeThis ravenous predatory fish is most commonly found in woodland lakes and flowing waters. Here autumn is the best time for catching pike. Springtime can also bring good catches. This is playtime for the pike, and males are often found in shallow bays waiting for the females. At the height of summer, they can be found deep in cool waters and will bite evenings and nights when venturing into more shallow waters.

PerChA rod, line, float and a tin of worms – that’s all you need to catch perch. Especially in the first half of summer, worms beat any other bait. But flies are also proven to work well. Perch is most abundant in woodland lakes and streams. It’s easiest to find mornings and evenings, in shallow waters near clusters of reed and rocks.

It was spending his summers with his grandfather in Hälsingland that turned Örebro native William Moberg-Faulds into a passionate sport fisherman. Today, he is the country’s leading authority on sport fishing with close to 200 TV shows on fishing behind him. Two of the episodes were about fishing in our waters in Veman and in Långå.

William comes to our region every summer to fish and attend theannual meeting with his fellow anglers in the traditional Dunkroken Guild, who have their summer residence in Långå.– Here you can find lots of classic waters, says William. The grayling really deserves its status as Härjedalen’s local fish.Fly-fishing for trout, char, grayling and whitefish is my favourite pastime. And in the region’s fine waters, the fish truly bite.– In my opinion, the grayling is by far the best-tasting fish out there, he says. Possible challenged by the perch.

When the Karlsson family wants some fresh trout on the dinner table, son Olle, aged 9, runs the few hundred metres from the house to the Norrveman stream. He never returns home empty-handed.

Olle Karlsson was three years old when he began fishing and when he turned seven he tied his first flies on his own. He practised and fine-tuned his virtually perfect casting technique back on the yard at home. – Really it’s my ”fault” I guess, laughs his father Magnus. It was me who took him fishing with me when he was really small. Now Olle is the one who takes me along. All year round. In winter, ice fishing is on the agenda. There’s hardly a water Olle hasn’t fished in around here.– Lillströmmen in Ljusnan is good, says Olle himself. I caught a 1.3 kg whitefish there on my very first try. Varggranstjärn with put-and-take is another one I like. But best of all is Veman with grayling and trout. My record for trout is one weighing in at 1.8 kg.If the flies he’s been working on in winter work the way he hopes,that record won’t stand very long...

Fishing tips

Mass hatching of large mayflies normally makes for excellent dry fly-fishing from midsummer and for another few weeks, for grayling in Veman and for trout in Stor-våndtjärn. Any imitation of Drake Mackerel Mayfly will do the job.

Veman can also offer fine dry fly-fishing for grayling late into autumn on sunny days.

All ponds and small forest lakes: small spinners or wobblers for trout and char (possibly bait with worms). Or try with a jig.

In Oxsjön, char and white-fish will bite on dry flies - a hot fishing tip for those who want to test their fly-fishing skills!

Välleströmmen stream. Only fly fishing up-stream from the flyover offers good fishing for grayling and trout all summer long. The best fishing for grayling is in early summer and autumn. Below the flyover, spijn fishing is also allowed.

Fotingen & Lännässjön. Here ice fishing is the highlight in late winter, when grayling and whitefish often loiter near the shores.

Trångforsen rapids. Fishing with streamers in the fast flowing rapids often attracts trout.

Höltjärnen. Night fishing can lure shy trout in the crystal-clear waters.

Bergstjärnen. Large pike can be caught here.

The stream is a popular fishing spot from land, often with tackle or spinner.

Röjån has some serious migrating trout from mid-summer on.

Klövsjön has good white-fish and perch fishing in both summer and winter. The great old pike also lies in wait among the reeds.

Lännässjön has good trout fishing with lures from the boat. Annual planting of oxsjö trout and grayling.

Svartåstjärn is an Eldorado for fly-, spin- and ice fishing. Fish weighing two kilos arenot uncommon.

Åsarna Ljungan och Fudan have made the area well-known in fishing circles. The stretch covers a total of 30 km. Fishing for grayling is considered very attractive but large trout can also be found in the streams.

Keep in mind

Find out when, where and how you are allowed to fish. Make sure you have a valid angling licence for the respec-tive waters.

Fish in moderation. Re-lease the fish you’re not going to eat so it can grow until nexttime. Respect the minimum sizes and regulations about closed seasons and fragile nature.

Always keep nature clean. Leave the fishing waters and nature the way you want to find them next time you come yourself.

Be careful when making a fire, and make sure it’s ex-tinguished before leaving the spot.

Never throw old lines away in nature. The pose a great risk to all animals.

Kill fish you want to keep immediately.

Handle fishing gear in accordance with sport fishing principles and aim to keep follow the principle: one angler, one rod, one bait.

It is not permitted to sell caught fish.

Take care of nature and the environment. Support fish conservation and all efforts to protect and improve the fish population.

Note that you must never-use live bait such as roach and bleak.
