An aircraft engaged in rescuing persons indanger at sea.

Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Established in1912 by Mr G. Holt Thomas. In 1914 secured theservices of Capt. Geoffrey de Havilland asdesigner-in-chief, who went on to lend his initialsto a number of highly successful machines.

A single-seat, pusher prop, escort and patrol-fighter. Used in the UK in a Home Defence roleuntil superseded in 1917.

A single-seat fighter which began service withthe RFC's fighter squadron in 1916. Some short-term success in dealing with new Fokkers butwas withdrawn from service in mid-1917.

A two-seat, single-engine bomber. Fast, versatileand well armed, but with a fuel tank poorly placedbetween pilot and gunner, was considered to bethe best day bomber of the First World War. Laterentered civil service.

The DH5 was an attempt to give a tractor-typefighter a good forward view. However itsuffered from unpleasant flying characteristicsand, as a result, had a short service career.

Originally designed as a trainer but relegated touse by the RNAS in a Maritime Reconnaissanceand anti-submarine role when the Avro 504became the standard trainer.

Developed from the DH4, featured the pilot andgunner cockpits in closer proximity, but sufferedfrom engine reliability problems. Also known asthe Ninak, saw service from 1918 to 1931.

Airspeed (1934) Ltd. registered in 1934 whenassociated with shipbuilders Swan, Hunter andWigham Richardson Ltd.. Acquired by deHavilland in 1940, maintaining own identity andchanging name to Airspeed Ltd. in 1944.

A biplane torpedo-bomber designed to be flownfrom aircraft carriers. Equipped with foldablewings for ease of storage. Joined Fleet Air Armservice in 1940, intended as a replacement forthe Swordfish.

Originally designed as a wood and steel bomber-reconnaissance aircraft, subsequent variationsserved as special transports, glider tugs andparatroop carriers. Featured a tricycle-styleundercarriage.

A single-engine, heavy, long range, three to five-crew day bomber. Served only with 99 SquadronRAF, 1924-5.

An important two-seat, tractor biplane, initiallyused by the RFC in a reconnaissance role and bythe RNAS as a bomber. Later converted to asingle-seat Home Defence fighter and ultimatelyused as a trainer.

American, four-engined, medium/heavy daybomber. Entered service in 1937. The prototypewas nicknamed the Flying Fortress, which laterbecame a registered trademark.

American, four-engined, long range,medium/heavy day bomber. Produced in greaternumbers than any other American aircraft duringthe war.

American twin-engined medium bomber andground-attack aircraft that entered service in1941. A small number were delivered to the RAFunder the British designation Mitchell I.

American twin-engined medium bomber. Enteredservice with the US 22nd Bombardment Group atLangley Field in February 1941. Also served withthe 14th and 39th RAF squadrons.

American, four-engine, long range, heavystrategic bomber. Entered service in 1943 andused exclusively against Japanese forces. TheB29s Enola Gay and Bock's Car were used todrop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in1945.

British multi-purpose, single-engined monoplanethat served as a torpedo-bomber, dive-bomber,reconnaissance aircraft and in other roles.Equipped with folding wings for use aboardaircraft carriers.

British three-seat, single-engine light bomber. Allmetal in construction, this monoplane had a 1000lb bomb load.

British two-seat, twin-engined night fighter. Alsoused for roles such as long-range escort fighter,ground-attack and anti-shipping strike aircraft,bomber, torpedo-carrier and rocket fighter.

Formed in 1935 by Lawrence D. Bell, Ray P.Whitman and Robert J. Woods, who left theConsolidated Aircraft Corporation when it movedits factory from Buffalo to San Diego. Sub-contracted work before its first original design,the XFM-1, in 1937.

Originally ordered as land based dive-bombers,with 950 being delivered to the RAF, none areknown to have flown operationally, insteadapparently serving as target tugs. Bermuda was

British twin-engined light/medium bomberdeveloped from the model 142 civil transport.Noted for its speed, this three-crew monoplanehad an all-metal, stressed skin structure and a1000lb bomb load.

A French aircraft manufacturer founded by LouisBleriot and Gabriel Voisin, both aviators andinventors, in 1903, dissolved in 1906. After WorldWar I Bleriot founded Bleriot Aeronautiquedeveloping commercial aircraft.

A French airliner produced in 1925. A four-engined biplane developed from the Bleriot 115and 135 but larger than these. Two were built forAir Union (the Paris-London route). Both crashedwith fatalaties in 1926 (Kent).

American A-20 twin-engined, light, day bomber.Some supplied to the RAF and known as theBoston I. Subsequent variations adapted to nightflying and re-christened the Havoc.

Four-crew, twin-engined monoplane designed asa torpedo-bomber and reconnaissance aircraftfor RAF Coastal Command. Withdrawn fromoperations in November 1940 and downgraded toa trainer.

Boulton Paul Aircraft, Ltd., formed in 1934 to takeover the Aircraft Department of Boulton & Paul,Ltd.

The Brewster Aeronautical Corporation wasfounded in 1932, taking over the plant, equipment,designs and goodwill of Brewster & Co., Inc.'saircraft division. Initially manufacturing seaplanecomponents, later designed and producedcomplete aircraft.

The Bristol Aeroplane Co., Ltd.. Founded in 1910by Sir George White, a pioneer of electrictramways. The company had previously beenThe British and Colonial Aeroplane Co., Ltd..

Highly successful, two-seat, biplane fighter andreconnaissance aircraft with both forward andrear facing guns. Designed to replace the BE2, itentered service with the RFC in mid-1917 andremained in service until 1932.

American, all-metal-construction, fighter. Enteredservice in 1941. 209 were delivered to RAF/FAA,most of which were used in the Far East.

A US aircraft manufacturer. The Cessna AircraftCo Inc was established in 1927

American troop and supply-glider constructedfrom steel tube and fabric-covered wood, with ahinged nose to allow loading and unloading oftroops or light vehicles. Also known as the Haig,this was the only US glider to see combatservice.

Chance Vought Division of the United AircraftCorporation. Was reconstituted as a separatedivision in 1943, after being part of the Vought-Sikorsky division, to concentrate on theproduction of combat aircraft.

An aircraft used to facilitate communications, forexample in a military context.

The Consolidated Aircraft Corporation. In 1943merged with Vultee Aircraft, Inc. to form theConsolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation.

Single-engine, single-seat fighter. Entered servicein 1943 as a land-based fighter. Converted to acarrierborne fighter in 1944 for use by US Navyand Fleet Air Arm. Mostly saw action in thePacific and Far East.

A British six-seat single-engined light aircraft,built by Airspeed Limited. First flew in 1933, sawsome use as an airliner. The first British type witha retractable undercarriage. Designed by HessellTiltman (co-founder). 16 Couriers built.

The Curtiss-Wright Corporation, Airplane Division,established in 1910. Notable aircraft producedinclude the Kittyhawk.

Also known as the C-47 Skytrain, this twin-engined, military transport was developed fromthe DC-3 twenty-eight-seat commercial airlinerand was the most extensively employedtransport of the Second World War.

The de Havilland Aircraft Co., Ltd., founded in1920 by Sir Geoffrey de Havilland, C.B.E., A.F.C.,F.R.Ae.S. Originally developers of commercialaircraft, were responsible for such notablewartime aircraft as the Mosquito and the TigerMoth.

A 1930s British short-haul biplane airliner for 6-8passengers. It proved an economical and durablecraft, despite its relatively primitive plywoodconstruction. Primarily used by the RAF.

British single-engine, two-seat night fighter.Originally intended as a day fighter, butwithdrawn and converted in August 1940, thiswas the first fighter to incorporate a power-driven gun turret.

A fighter-bomber designed to deploy its bombsduring the latter stage of a diving manoeuvre,thus increasing the accuracy of its targetting.

A streamlined, twin-engined bomber, the DO17entered service in 1937 with the Condor Legion,having started life as a high-speed mail andpassenger transport aircraft, a role for which itwas ill-suited due to the narrowness of thefuselage.

German single-engine, four-seat maritime patroland reconnaissance flying-boat. In productionbetween 1934 and 1940, the DO18 was replacedby the three engined DO24.

Export version of the DO17.

A progressive development of the DO17, thetwin-engined DO217 entered service in 1941. TheDO217 saw service as a bomber over the UKand took part in the 'Baedecker' raids of 1942.

German three-engined air/sea rescue andtransport flying boat. Entered service in 1940 asa replacement for the DO18.

The Douglas Aircraft Company, Inc., establishedin 1920, reorganized in 1928. Produced suchnotable aircraft as the Dakota.

The English Electric Company Limited. Formed in1918, but didn't move into aircraft production until1938, at the Government's request. Continued todevelop aircraft after the war and in 1948produced the `Canberra', Britain's first jet-propelled bomber.

Originally a light day-bomber, the Boston II, re-christened the Havoc, was adapted for night-flying in the fighter-intruder role. Was capable ofa top speed in excess of 300 mph.

Hawker Aircraft, Ltd., established 1933 tosucceed the H. G. Hawker Engineering Co., Ltd.,which had been formed in 1920 as the result ofthe voluntary liquidation of the renowned Sopwithconcern.

The main German, medium bomber of the war, theHE111 first saw action during the Spanish CivilWar. HE111s took part in the Battle of Britain andfrom 1944 onwards were used to launchairborne flying bombs against London.

Ernst Heinkel A.G.. Formed in 1922 by Dr. ErnstHeinkel, previously Chief Designer with Hansa-Brandenburgische Flugzeugwerke, where heproduced many notable seaplanes during WorldWar One.

Originally designed as a light bomber but divertedfor use as a high speed target tug to replace out-dated biplanes.

Twin-engined, four-seat medium bomber. A re-engined variant of the Hampden, less than 200were built but never became operational due toengine unreliability. Some were converted toHampdens.

Troop and general transport glider. Almostentirely wooden in construction, many weremanufactured by the furniture industry. Mk Ifeatured a a door-ramp on the port side whilst theMk II was fitted with a hinged nose.

Principal glider-pilot training glider fitted withtandem seats. Spruce and plywood inconstruction, the Hotspur served with the GliderPilot Regiment between 1941 and 1945.

Twin-engined maritime-reconnaissance bomberadapted from pre-war American airliners, the A-28 and A-29, evident from the row of portholesalong its fuselage. Entered service with RAFCoastal Command just before the outbreak ofWorld War Two.

Single-engine, single-seat fighter, also adaptedas a night-fighter, fighter-bomber, rocket-projectile fighter and tank-buster. The firstmonoplane to enter RAF service with 14,000being produced between 1937 and 1944.

Three-seat tactical support aircraft. Enteringservice with the US 9th Air Force in 1944, theInvader had a bomb load of 4,000 lbs and waslater used as a conventional medium bomber.

Large, three-engined, long range reconnaissanceflying boat. Wooden hull and frame construction,with linen covering. Entered service in 1930.

All-weather fighter/interceptor first flow in 1951,introduced into service in 1956 and retired fromthe RAF in 1968.

A twin-engined development of the JU88, theJU188 had a higher service ceiling and greatermaximum speed. JU188s operated over the UKfrom 1944 onwards as night intruders andreconnaissance aircraft.

Four-engine, long range heavy bomber.Developed from the Lancaster, and originallydesignated the Lancaster Mk. IV, it was larger insize, bombload and fuel capacity. Never usedoperationally in World War Two.

The Glenn L. Martin Company, established in 1909by Glenn L Martin. Produced the first successfulAmerican-designed twin-engined aeroplane, theMartin Twin, which was then converted for useas a passenger aircraft.

Single-engine, advanced-pilot trainer. Spruce andplywood in construction, entered service in 1939,continuing to serve as a trainer, and also a targettug, until 1950.

Single-engine, advanced-pilot trainer used insecondary flying training schools. Serving from1939-50, was also used as a target tug forgunnery practice.

McDonnell Douglas was a major Americanaerospace manufacturer and defense contractor,producing a number of famous commercial andmilitary aircraft.

Single-engine, single-seat fighter manufacturedby Messerschmitt. First used as part ofGermany's Condor legion during the Spanish CivilWar, the 'one-o-nine' was the Luftwaffe's mostwidely used fighter seeing service throughoutWorld War II.

Developed as a long range, heavy day-fighter,the ME110 found its niche as a night fighter. Itsaw service over Southern and Eastern Englandduring the Battle of Britain but lost out in thedaytime to the faster British fighters.

Developed from the ill-fated ME210, the ME410Hornisse entered service in May 1943. Althoughunderpowered as a day fighter the ME410 sawservice over the UK as a night fighter from 1943-45.

A bomber designed to operate with mediumbombloads over medium distances.The mediumbomber was generally considered to be anydesign that delivered about 4,000 lb (1.8 t) overranges of about 1,500 to 2,000 miles (2,400 to3,200 km).

Single-engine navigation trainer andcommunications aircraft. Constructed of tubularsteel and duralumin frame, with a duralumin andcanvas covering, 500 were delivered to the FAA,serving from 1944-5.

Single-engined fighter, developed from the Camel.Entered service in 1918 and became the RAF'sfirst mainstay peacetime fighter.

The Sopwith Aviation Co., Ltd.. Established in1911 by the noted aviator Mr T. O. M. Sopwith.Produced many notable aircraft, including theCamel and a Schneider Cup-winning seaplane.

Interbellum, twin-engined, five-crew, biplaneflying-boat with a characteristic triple tail-fin.Entered service in 1925 and used for generalreconnaissance duties. The Mk.I had a woodenfuselage, whilst the Mk.II's was metal inconstruction.

Single-engine, single-seat interceptor fighterdeveloped from the race-winning SchneiderTrophy seaplanes. One of the most famous of allcombat aircraft, entered RAF service in 1938 andwas still in use in the 1950s.

The Stinson Division of The Consolidated VulteeAircraft Corporation. Originally the StinsonAircraft Division of the Aviation ManufacturingCorpn., who were taken over by Vultee AircraftInc., who merged with the Consolidated AircraftCorpn. in 1943.

Seven/eight-crew, heavy night-bomber. The firstfour-engine bomber to join the RAF, with a bombload of 14000 lb, entered service in 1940.Superseded as a bomber by the Lancaster andHalifax, later versions served as transports andtugs.

Twin-engined, seven-crew, coastalreconnaissance, biplane flying-boat. Designed tothe same specification as the Saro London,entered service in 1937. Also serving in an anti-submarine role, was replaced by theConsolidated Canso (Catalina) in 1943.

Four-engine, ten-crew, long-range maritimereconnaissance and anti-submarine aircraft.Developed from the Short C-class Empire airliner.All metal in construction, entered RAF CoastalCommand service in 1938.

The Supermarine Company was formed in 1912and specialised in producing sea-going aircraft,including several Schneider Trophy winners.Taken over by Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd., in 1938.

Designed to replace the Hurricane as aninterceptor, excelled as a rocket-projectile-firingground-attack fighter. Entered RAF service in1941.

Canadian-built, single-engine, high-wing transportand communications aircraft converted from acivilian model. Metal-framed with fabric covering,saw service in 1944-5. Was capable of beingequipped with wheels, floats or skis.

Jet-propelled, pilotless aircraft carrying a one-tonexplosive warhead. Also known as the FieselerFI-103, the V1 was nicknamed the doodlebug, orbuzz bomb.

Four-engined, five to seven crew, heavy bomberbiplane. Entered service in 1918.

A single engine, jet propelled twin boom aircraftwhich came into service in 1945 in a variety ofroles including night fighter, trainer, the carrier-borne Sea Vampire, and the MK5 version, afighter bomber. Produced by De Havilland.

Single-engine aircraft designed as a dive-bomber.Found to be inadequate in this role, a number ofthose delivered to the RAF were used as targettugs. Entered service in 1941.

Second World War allied patrol-bomber built byLockheed Vega, a Lockheed subsidiary. Thisaircraft was a military development of theLodestar, USAF designation B-34.

Vickers (Aviation) Ltd. formed in 1911, as theaviation division of Vickers Ltd., and took controlof Supermarine Aviation Works Ltd. the sameyear. Taken over by Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd. in1938.

Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd.. In 1938 took overVickers (Aviation) Ltd., which itself had takencontrol of Supermarine Aviation Works Ltd. in1928.

Twin-engine, three-crew, long-range heavybomber biplane. Entered service in 1917. Ofwooden construction with a fabric covering, theVimy was fitted with a skid under the nose of itsfuselage to prevent tipping forward upon landing.

Twin-engined, four-crew bomber. Woodenframed, with linen covering, entered service in1924, equipping several RAF squadrons.

A jet-powered tailless delta wing high-altitudestrategic bomber plane, operated by the RAFfrom 1956 until 1984. Typically armed withnuclear weapons but capable of conventionalbombing missions. Used as a nuclear deterrent inthe Cold War.

Vultee Aircraft, Inc.. In 1943 merged with TheConsolidated Aircraft Corporation to form TheConsolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation.

A British medium-range biplane airliner designedand built by Handley Page in 1921. A twin-engined variant of the Handley Page W series(W8, W9), retired in 1931. Built for ImperialAirways (4 units built).

The Waco Aircraft Company, established in 1921.One of the largest pre-war producers of civilaircraft in America, Waco specialised in theproduction of troop and cargo carrying glidersduring World War Two.

Three/four-crew, single-engine, shipboardobservation and air/sea rescue amphibianseaplane. Entered RAF service in 1936. Alsoemployed for gunnery spotting, anti-submarineand convoy protection duties.

Twin-engined air/sea rescue and anti-submarinepatrol aircraft. Originally developed from theWellington and intended as a bomber, enteredRAF Coastal Command service in 1943. Fittedwith a Leigh Light and ASV radar.

Six-crew, twin-engined medium night-bomber.Entered service in 1938 and was the RAF'sprincipal bomber until 1943, participating in thefirst bombing raid of the war. Later versionsserved as torpedo and reconnaissance-bombers,transports and trainers.

Westland Aircraft Ltd., formed in 1935 to takeover the aircraft branch of Petters Ltd.,previously known as the Westland AircraftWorks.

Twin-engined fighter-bomber. All metal inconstruction, entered service in 1940. Supportedbombing operations and participated in attacks onFrance, but not widely used due to engine faults.

Twin-engined bomber. The Whitley was the first'heavy' bomber to be built in quantity for the RAFand made the first bombing attack on Germany inMay 1940. It was later used for convoyprotection and reconnaissance.

Transport version of the four-engined Lancasterbomber. Serving from 1943 to 1951, and all metalin construction, this aircraft was usedextensively during the Berlin airlift.
