Assistance for Military FamiliesSupported more than 6,000 military families in the Bay Area with

information and referrals, and provided emergency communications for 1,348 military families.

Disaster Relief & Emergency AssistanceHelped more than 1,773 people last year following local disasters, like home fires or floods. Bay Area volunteers also responded to disasters outside the region, including in American Samoa, New Jersey, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Support for International Relief EffortsRallied the Bay Area community to help the

people of Haiti, Chile, China, the Philippines and Samoa following devastating disasters.

Education in International Humanitarian LawExpanded international humanitarian law education through community outreach and trained 49 new Exploring Humanitarian Law educators this year.

In my work with the American Red Cross, I’m most inspired by the personal stories. A family who lost their home to a fire, surrounded by caring Red Cross volunteers dedicated to doing what they can to help them heal and recover. A wounded soldier at Travis Air Force Base who is able to find relaxation and comfort in a lounge created and staffed by Red Cross volunteers. A family now able to combat disease in Kenya thanks to measles vaccinations and malaria nets paid for by donors in the Bay Area. I see stories like these throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Together, they combine to produce extraordinary impact on the communities we seek to support and help.

Even during large disasters, it’s the small actions that make a real difference in helping others through the Red Cross. This year, the people of the Bay Area had an especially strong impact not only in helping those in our own community but also in lending a helping hand to the people who experienced devastating disasters in Haiti, Chile, the Philippines and Samoa.

Following the Haiti earthquake, thousands of people in our region contributed to the relief efforts with donations. Young people were particularly saddened, wanting to help children thousands of miles away in Haiti. A group of fourth graders at Hamlin School in San Francisco held a coin drive and a bake sale to raise more than $5,000, along with matching funds from parents and teachers, to donate to the Red Cross. These girls, so full of compassion for the people of Haiti, were able to make a difference, providing the support necessary for the Red Cross to continue its relief and rebuilding efforts in Haiti. All throughout the Bay Area, schools, businesses and neighborhoods joined together to help those devastated by disaster.

As you read this report, you’ll see many stories of the work of our Red Cross volunteers, partners and donors over the past year. It’s thanks to the work of these exceptional individuals – and you our donors – that the Red Cross is able to train, educate and assist the people in our community and beyond. In the Bay Area, we are blessed to live in one of the most thoughtful and philanthropic communities in the nation. I am truly inspired by how our community responds when disaster strikes our neighbors here in the Bay Area and around the world, as we saw this year with the outpouring of support for the people of Haiti and other countries hit by disaster. This kindness allows us to respond in a robust way, providing the financial support and our caring volunteers to help those in need.

The compassion and dedication our volunteers bring to fulfilling the mission of the Red Cross within the Bay Area is what keeps me energized and excited about the work we do in our community. From teaching first aid and CPR classes, to helping a family made homeless by a fire, to getting the word out about disaster preparedness at community events, our volunteers illustrate how small actions can produce amazing results.

I’m especially impressed by the youth who choose to work with the Red Cross – young people like the interns our chapter hosted last summer as part of the Chapman-Holcombe International Internship Program. These three young people from China, Jordan and the United Kingdom had an incredible sense of compassion and commitment to upholding the mission ideals of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. I’m encouraged that this next generation of volunteers within the Red Cross will make a better world.

Over the last year, our youth and adult volunteers in the Bay Area have helped more than 1,700 people who found themselves homeless following a house fire or other disaster. They also provided training in lifesaving skills, such as first aid, CPR and disaster preparedness, to more than 425,000 people. Day in and day out, our volunteers quietly do their work, helping one family at a time by providing them with assistance or educating them about the steps they can take now to be prepared for a disaster or health emergency in the future.

In the coming year, we look forward to dedicating ourselves to making the Bay Area the most disaster-resilient community in the nation. We will focus on our mission by building greater capacity within our community to respond to disasters large and small. In striving to meet our mission together as a community, I know collectively we will achieve an extraordinary impact and succeed in making our community a safer place to live.

Red Cross Provides Comfort Following Chinatown Fire

Early in the morning, Yi Ling and Lin Bin Guan woke up to billow-ing smoke in the hall and the shouts of neighbors in their apartment building in San Francisco. A fire that started in a restaurant on the first floor had spread to the apartments above, forcing a hundred residents into the street in their pajamas.

Like most of the residents, Yi Ling and Lin Bin Guan didn’t speak much English. They were seniors who had immigrated from China years before. They found themselves homeless and uncertain where to turn for help.

The American Red Cross immediately moved the residents to an evacuation center at a nearby hotel until arrangements could be made to open a shelter. Caring for the families’ needs – from speak-ing in their native languages to serving food from local Chinatown restaurants – eased the stress and sadness caused by the fire.

When disaster strikes, Red Cross volunteers are there not only to provide shelter and food, but also the comfort of shared language and culture that can happen when neighbors help each other.

Red Cross Trains Muslim Community in Preparedness

How do you explain disaster preparedness when the concept does not naturally exist within a community? For many members of the Bay Area’s Arabic-speaking community, a strong religious faith and family ties serve as a safety net. In partnering with the Islamic Foundation of San Francisco, the American Red Cross expanded this community’s preparedness through culturally-sensitive trainings in Arabic.

The first training focused on mothers, drawing together a core group of women who could take the steps necessary to get their families prepared for disaster. The Red Cross worked extensively with a trans-lator to develop a curriculum and produced new Arabic educational materials, including personal preparedness handbooks, emergency contact cards and coloring books for children.

Through this workshop the Red Cross successful trained nearly 30 women in the Muslim community. The workshop was also the start of a successful partnership that will allow the Red Cross to continue to engage with and support the local Muslim community in ongoing disaster response and preparedness activities.

The Henry Dunant Society recognizes donors who have contributed $50,000 or more over their lifetimes to the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter. Henry Dunant founded the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 and started the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Red Cross Helps Berkeley Woman and Heroic Pet After an Apartment Fire

One night Johanna White woke to her dog, Baby, jumping on her bed and barking. She smelled smoke and realized her building was on fire. Alone in her apartment while her family was out of town, White would not have woken up if it were not for her dog.

White and her family lived in an apartment above the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society. As White watched her burning apartment, the fire department and the American Red Cross arrived to provide help.

The Red Cross put White and her heroic pit bull in a pet-friendly hotel for the night and provided her with assistance for food, toiletries and clothing. The Red Cross was also able to provide financial assistance for White and her family to put down a deposit on a new home, as well as purchase new bedding and linens.

“I really appreciated all the help from the Red Cross. I realized that I didn’t have a clue that the Red Cross offered this kind of assistance. I knew I took my CPR class there, but I didn’t know they could help me like this,” White said.

Deloitte Impact Day Trains More Than 75 Employees in Shelter Operations

As part of its annual Deloitte Impact Day, more than 75 Deloitte & Touche LLP employees from the consulting, tax and audit groups became trained as American Red Cross shelter workers.

Deloitte employees received training on how to operate and manage a disaster shelter. The day also included a shelter simulation, where Deloitte employees acted as shelter workers and residents, giving them experience in what a real-life disaster might involve. The employees are now trained to serve with the Red Cross on the frontlines of a disaster relief operation.

Monica O’Reilly, partner at Deloitte & Touche LLP and American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter board member, felt that it was important for Deloitte to partner with the Red Cross.

“The safety and preparedness of our employees is of utmost importance to our firm. We are grateful that we were able to partner with the Red Cross for this training and other events to make sure not only that our employees are personally prepared, but they are also prepared to help the communities in which they live and work,” said O’Reilley.

The following donors contributed to the success of the annual Paint the Town Red Gala, an annual fundraising event benefiting the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter.

Marin Partnership Pre-Positions Supplies, Trains Shelter Workers to Speed Immediate Disaster Relief

In the aftermath of a disaster, the need for shelter, food and relief supplies is immediate. There isn’t always time for items to be shipped from a warehouse. Following a major earthquake, transportation across the bay may even prove to be impossible. That’s why the American Red Cross is pre-positioning supplies and training local communities to operate shelters throughout the Bay Area, especially in areas where residents may be especially vulnerable.

A partnership between Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the City of San Rafael, the Canal Alliance and the Red Cross placed trailers with enough supplies to activate a 300-person shelter in the Canal neighborhood of San Rafael. Many immigrants in the neighborhood live in poverty and do not speak or read English.

PG&E provided the funding for the supply trailers, training and partnership development. In addition to the standard shelter supplies, the Red Cross and the City of San Rafael also included specialized materials to allow for those with access and functional needs, such as elevated cots, handheld showerheads and amplified phones. The City of San Rafael is housing the trailers in its Corp Yard and is providing maintenance of the containers.

Also in partnership with San Rafael and the Canal Alliance, the Red Cross has trained shelter managers and workers to set up and run a shelter, resulting in more than 30 trained volunteers.
