A word from Pastor Amy….

Happy Easter…Season! The journey of Lent is over. The earth-shattering moments of Holy Week have been remembered. Now the joy of Easter has begun! Last weekend we celebrated the foundational event of our faith—Jesus’ resurrection from the dead! We celebrated with beautiful flowers, joyful music, additional family members present in worship, and praise to our risen Savior. Yet the joy of Easter does not end on Easter evening. For the disciples of Jesus, Easter evening was the beginning of a new journey—the journey of following a risen Lord out into the world. First, they had to wrap their hearts and minds around the fact that Jesus was resurrected from the dead. Then, they had to determine what difference it would make in their lives to now fol-low a crucified and risen Lord. For us today, the joy of Easter can continue into the Easter Season, 50 days that last from Easter to Pentecost (June 4th this year). We, too, have to determine what difference it will make in our lives to follow a crucified and risen Lord. We will continue our celebration of Easter in April with our “Paid in Full” theme for the Mort-gage Burning Celebration and Easter Party, followed by the children’s Easter Musical “Happy Day.” In May we will build upon our Easter faith as we hear from passages in the letter of 1 Peter. What inheritance of faith have we received? How do we center ourselves in the good news of Jesus passed down to us for generations? What is our foundation that grounds us so that we can go forth and share our stories of faith and hope? May we continue to celebrate the joy of Easter all season long! Pastor Amy

Lay Leader Report As I look out the window of my home office, I see trees that are becoming fully leafed. Daffodils have been in bloom for a few weeks and tulips are blooming all around. The red bud tree in our front yard is spectacular in its pink announcement that spring has sprung. Soon we all will be busy with flower and veg-etable gardens, raising color and healthy food from the soil. God’s bounty in this earth is amazing, as is God’s Amazing Grace. We might take the beauty of spring for granted, but if we should take a moment to admire and thank God for this annual blessing. God’s grace is even more beautiful than the floral bouquets that are everywhere. Through the sacrifice of Jesus, we are offered this Amazing Grace, at no cost to us. Jesus paid the very high price for us so we are free to accept this gift of grace. We thank God for this blessing in each life. The Ohio River Valley District invites all to a spring district worship on May 24, at Mason UMC. This worship service will include won-derful music, district and conference news, and celebrations of clergy people who are making appointment moves. This event is a great opportunity to be with district officers and to learn what’s happening in our district. I plan to attend and encourage all to join me. It is good when a district event is located so close to home.

Plans are being finalized for West Ohio Annu-al Conference, in June in Lakeside Ohio. Gar-ry and Bev Haun have stepped down as our Lay Members. Jack Hott will fill that role now. Kirby Cain and Alexa Lawhorn will serve as district delegates and I will attend as a Cer-tified Lay Minister. Gavel to gavel coverage of this event will be live-streamed through the WOC website. The music, preaching and teaching promise to be outstanding. I always enjoy attending. This district is still accepting at large delegates, so tell Pastor Amy or my-self if you would like to attend with full voting credentials. As the school year winds down and summer vacations loom, please be safe. Also be safe in the comforting knowledge that God loves you. - David Finney

Church Group Information Needed Our church historian, Savannah Martin, is in need of information about our various church groups. She is looking for activities and mis-sions the groups have undertaken in the past few years, information on membership and photos of the groups. If you do not have photographs, Savannah will be happy to come to a meeting or event and take pic-tures. If you are part of a church group that has not yet provided information, please reach out to Savannah at abbyfanatic1 @yahoo.com or 937-266-3840.

First Steps Campaign

Step 1 Achieved! On April 23, we celebrated as a church family the payoff of our church mortgage! First United Methodist is now debt free thanks to our church family’s faithful giving! The First Steps committee encourages continued giv-ing to support Step 2 of the First Steps Cam-paign which will raise $50,000 for worship enhancements. Plans include providing some flexible seating, updating our audio and visual equipment and adjusting the back wall to allow for overflow services such as we had at Easter. We are already on our way, having $11,317 donated towards Step 2 as of April 16. Thank you for your support of our church and its future!

Wonderful Wednesdays on Hiatus Wonderful Wednesdays are now on hiatus until the fall. Thank you to all who joined in for the learning, food and fellowship we shared this past school year.

Spring Clean-Up Needed? Is your yard a mess from the harsh win-ter? Do you need help cleaning out the gar-age? Do you want help spreading fresh mulch in your flower beds this spring? The Senior High Youth are willing to help out if you are in need of some extra hands and strong backs. Please contact Brian Schlise at 937-272-6167 to talk about what jobs you need help with and to schedule a date and time the youth can come to your place and attack the job. We look forward to helping you out.

Church Groups Meetings/Schedules

Women In Faith The next meeting of Women in Faith will be Saturday, May 6 at 9:00 in Fellowship Hall. For information on Women in Faith, please call Judy Cook, Barb Mills or Jean Reazer

Clearcreakers Senior Group

The Clearcreakers meeting will be May 17 at 11:30 in Fellowship Hall. The program will be a presentation on the History of Technical In-telligence in Dayton by Rob Young, a long time employee of the National Air and Space Intelli-gence Center (NASIC) at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Victor Bilek, a 98 year old veteran who was active in intelligence during WWII, will be joining Rob Young. Sloppy Joes will be served. Please bring a cas-serole, side dish, salad or dessert to share and please remember to bring your own eating utensils. Try to join us for some fun, food, and fellowship. Questions, call: Linda Tennant or Martha Ruth-erford.

United Methodist Men The men and older boys of our church will be visiting a neighboring church on May 20. It will be our privilege to join the Band of Brothers, the men’s ministry of Middletown’s The Gath-ering congregation. On the 20th, we will pre-pare and serve breakfast to the Band of Broth-ers, at their church. We will then join those men for their monthly Bible study. The Gathering is a United Methodist church in Middletown. Many of The Gathering congre-gation live at the poverty level so their month-ly Bible study and breakfast draws a large crowd. Since our guys are quite skilled at pre-paring breakfast, it is a good fit for us to cook breakfast. Then the Band of Brothers will lead us in their monthly study. This event is a great opportunity to be in service and to learn from another men’s fellowship. We encourage all men to participate in this

event. We will carpool from church, leaving at

7:30 am. We will then cook breakfast on site

at The Gathering. At 9:00, we will have break-

fast with our friends with the Band of Broth-

ers. Bible study will follow. We should be

back in Springboro before 11:00 am.

Relay for Life of Warren County Having cancer is so hard. Finding help should-n’t be. If you’ve heard the words “you have cancer” you know how important it is to have easy access to support and resources. Thanks in part to Relay For Life supporters, the Ameri-can Cancer Society is able to be there for mil-lions of people touched by cancer each year. Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It is a time to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. Once again our church will be represented in this event. This year, there is not going to be a Springboro event, so we are going to be involved in the Warren County Relay on June 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Warren County Fair-ground (665 N. Broadway in Lebanon). Ways to get involved include:

Holy Java The Holy Java Sunday School class will begin a new study based on the book Follow by Andy Stanly on April 30. In this eight-session video-based Bible study, the class will journey through the Gospels tracing Jesus’ teaching on what it means to follow. Many think Christianity is all about doing what Jesus says. But what if doing what Jesus says isn’t what Jesus says to do at all? Jesus’ invitation is an invitation to relationship, and it begins with a simple request: follow me. For more information on the Holy Java class, please contact Maria Dershem. The class meets at 9:15 on Sunday mornings in the con-ference Room.

Cornerstone Class

Barbara Geiger will be leading the Corner-stone Class in May with a four week study on the spiritual discipline of prayer and listen-ing. The focus will be on building a relation-ship with God and relating to God in an au-thentic way through prayer and listening. For more information on the class, please contact Barb Geiger.

Tuesday Bible Study The Tuesday morning Bible study continues their study of the Book of James. In May the class will meet on 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th at 10:00 a.m. in the music room.

Women in Faith Bible Study The Women in Faith Bible Study will hold their final meeting of the school year on May 9 at 7:00 p.m. They continue their study of Know What You Believe by Paul E. Little. For information on the study, please contact Lor-raine Sower.

Vacation Bible School Registration Our Vacation Bible School theme this year is Hero Central. Our evening session will be the week of July 17 from 5:45—8:45 p.m. The morning session will be the week of the 24th from 9:00 a.m. to noon. VBS will take kids on awesome adventures alongside some of their favorite Bible heroes and discover the quali-ties that make us truly heroic in God. VBS He-ro Central uses epic music, spectacular sci-ence, crafty crafts, heroic recreation, and fan-tastic Bible stories to help kids discover their strength in God! Registration for this summer’s VBS will open to church members the week of May 1 and then opened to Bright Beginnings families the following week. The link to sign up is http://2017.cokesburyvbs.com/fumcspringboro. Our VBS is very popular so don’t delay in signing up your children.

Bright Beginnings Buzz In May, the children will learn about animals and insects! The children will enjoy visits from animals during May. These activities reinforce our Bible verse “Let the Earth bring forth creatures of all kind.” (Genesis 1:24) and the Fruit of the Spirit of gentleness. Pas-tor Amy will lead us in our final Children’s Church sessions of the school year. In addi-tion, we’ll hold our annual “Spring Sing and Art Show” concert and silent auction fund-raiser, a carnival and graduation!

A.C.E. Our A.C.E. kids had a great time in April fo-cused on Earth Day! The children also “visited” Scotland. In May, the ACE students will learn about the national parks of the USA and will honor their mothers. ACE will wrap up a great year together with outdoor play and activities. If you would like to know more about our A.C.E. program for school-aged children please contact Kim Crosen.

In May our Parent Connection program will have two activities. First, Parents with a Pur-pose will meet on May 1 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. to stock shelves, date donations, and organize at the Springboro Community Assis-tance Center. Then on May 18, we will hold a Table Talk from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. The topic will be “Safe as necessary, not as possible.” We will discuss the importance of allowing your children to make mistakes, practice making age appropriate choices, and why a little bit of risk is important for their develop-ment. Childcare is available for both events. Please email Becky Frost at bbcpfumc@ gmail.com to reserve.

West Ohio Conference Summer Camps Each summer, the West Ohio Conference offers a variety of summer camps at their three facilities—Camp Otterbein, Camp Wes-ley and Camp Widewater. If you are interest-ed in learning more about the exciting sum-mer adventures they offer, the church office has a copy of their 2017 Summer Camp Guide. [email protected], 937-684-1097 What a great month of celebrations we had in April. It’s a blessing to be a part of this won-derful church family. More importantly, we thank God for giving us His Son and for loving us so much that he gave His life, only to rise from the grave so that we too can have eter-nal life. I’m looking forward to our time together this month. I hope you will make every effort to join us. Yours in Christ, Kirby Weekly Activities

When God thought of Mother,

he must have laughed with satisfaction—

so rich, so deep, so divine,

so full of soul, power and beauty,

was the conception!

Franklin Food Pantry

The Pantry at Franklin Area Community Ser-vices continues to assist many people facing personal and financial hardships. Hundreds of our neighbors in need from Franklin, Springboro and Carlisle come to The Pantry every week. In 2016 we distributed about one million pounds of food to feed hungry families. The Pantry is in need of more vol-unteers to keep this safety net in our com-munity strong. We have volunteer opportu-nities each weekday morning and afternoon and Wednesday evenings. To learn more or want to volunteer, please call or email the Director, Terry Coyle at 937-746-7791 or [email protected].

Volunteer, Mission & Outreach Opportunities Please contact Rebecca in the church office ([email protected] or 748-2612), unless otherwise noted, if you are inter-ested in any of these opportunities.

Mission Trip Chaperone Needed

Have you often thought that the youth sum-mer mission trips sound like a time of great fun and service? Wish you could tag along? Well, now is your chance! We are in need of a female chaperone for the youth mission trip to Michigan. The trip is June 27 to July 2. If you are not able to commit to the entire week and would be willing to support half of the trip that would be great as well. If you are interested and would like more information, please contact Brian Schlise at Brianschlise@ habeggercorp.com or 937-272-6167.

Box Tops/Campbell Labels Our Mission Team will continue to collect box tops and Campbell food labels for Red Bird Mission throughout this school year. There are bins in which to place the labels and box tops located in the black stand across from the music room. Thank you.

Otterbein Avalon

David Finney leads a group to engage with senior residents of the Otterbein Avalon com-munity (located off north Bunnel Hill Road) every Wednesday. The carpool leaves from church at 1:15 and returns by 3:30. We will interact with the Otterbein residents through worship, singing and game time. If you are interested, please let David Finney know (513-727-4395).

Medical Driver Ministry

If you find you need someone to drive you to and/or from a medical appointment, our church offers a Medical Driver Ministry. This

ministry is a free gift of love to members and friends with no charge or fee. We look for-ward to providing medical transportation whenever and wherever needed. To schedule a medical driver, please contact Harold Mas-teller.

When Caregivers Need Care Every time you fly, the flight attendant tells you to put on your own oxygen mask first…then assist others. Yet too often, people who are caring for others put their own needs last…which makes providing care even more difficult. If someone you know is taking care of a loved one with a chronic illness, disability, or de-mentia, there’s a great way you can help them get their own oxygen mask in place: tell them about Stephen Ministry. Stephen Minis-ters are trained to provide care to those who are caring for others and to help them through the rough patches by listening, car-ing, encouraging, and providing emotional and spiritual support. A Stephen Minister can be a fresh breath of oxygen for a struggling caregiver. To learn how to connect someone with Ste-phen Ministry, talk with Zandra Woody or Su-san Raihala. Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!
