In each of the three
Synoptic Gospels (Mark,
Matthew, and Luke), after
Jesus’ baptism by John, Jesus
is reported to have gone to the
desert to fast and pray for 40 days. In each case,
while in the desert, Jesus is tempted by the devil.
Matthew and Luke give more detail than
Mark does, but each one tells how the devil tempts
Jesus in the desert. In Matthew, as in Luke, the devil
presents three temptations to Jesus. The devil tempts
Jesus to use his power to appease his hunger; he
tempts Jesus to put God’s promise of protection to the
test; and he offers Jesus all of the kingdoms of the
world if Jesus will worship the devil. In each case,
Jesus resists the temptation, rebuking the devil with
words from Scripture.
The account of Jesus’ temptation in the desert
is filled with allusions and
parallels to the Old Testament,
including the story of the people
of Israel. The Israelites spent 40
years wandering in the desert in
Exodus, for example, and Jesus
spends 40 days in the desert. As
the Israelites were tempted
during the Exodus, so too is Jesus
tempted.
Each temptation offers insight into both God and the
human condition. Jesus’ rejection of the temptations
shows that he will not put God to the test. Grounding
himself on the word and authority of Scripture, Jesus
rebukes the devil, confident in God’s protection and
faithfulness.
As we start our journey through Lent, our
Sunday readings call us to adopt the same confidence
that Jesus had in the face of temptation: God’s word
alone will suffice; God’s promise of protection can be
trusted; God alone is God.

Fellow Parishioners:
Welcome to the spiritual season of Lent. I would like to inform you of a few opportunities
that are being offered to us this Lent so as to aid us in our spiritual growth with Lord.
A number of us have already taken the booklets, Daily Reflections for Lent and The Little
Black Book. Both of these are wonderful sources of scripture prayer and meditation
throughout the days of Lent. They are also tools to aid us in Pope Francis’ desire for all of
us to become more grounded in the reading, praying and implementation of the Holy
Word in our daily lives.
Another spiritual practice that is being offered to us is the St.
Vincent de Paul’s, Fill-A-Pill offering. Through this offering we
are living out one of the Lenten practices of almsgiving. What we are being asked to do is
take a pill bottle, put a monetary offering in it, place it in the bin and we will send it the St.
Vincent de Paul Pharmacy in our diocese so as to aid those who need of life giving medication
that they cannot afford.
The third Lenten practice we are also asked to consider is: The
Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl. Through these donations we send
monies to national Catholic Relief Services who in turn offer aid to
our needy hungry brothers and sisters throughout the world.
As in years past, I am proud to say that we will be having our annual Lenten mission. This
year it will be conducted by Father Simeon Gallagher, O.F.M. Fr. Gallagher has been with
us before and his missions have been well received. I personally invite you to plan on
attending this year’s mission beginning on Monday, March 30 thru Thursday, April
2nd. The theme of the mission is: Healing Hearts and Home; Reclaiming
Virtues. The first day and evening conference is entitled: Love the Lodestar
of Life and the scripture for day is Matthew 5:1-16. The second day’s
conference is: Relationship Virtues: Civility, Learning, Forgiveness and
Mercy and the scripture is Matthew 6:7-15. The third day’s conference is:
In the Face of Cynicism: Gratitude, Work and Optimism and the scripture is Psalm 139:1-9.
The fourth day’s conference is: Guardians of Virtue: Marriage and Family 1 Corinthians
13;1-13. I would suggest that prior to your coming that you would spend time reflecting and
meditating on the theme and the scriptures of the day. More information concerning the
mission will be forthcoming. I invite you to mark the dates now and plan on being with us.
Well as you can see we do have a few opportunities to aid us in our
spiritual development this Lent. Take advantage of these spiritual
practices.
God bless and let us pray for each other.
