Gathering Hymn: Light an Advent Candle

1 Light an Advent candle See it from afar, How it shines so brightly Like the guiding star. Light an Advent candle So we’ll make a space, Clear away the rubbish From God’s dwelling place.

2 Light an Advent candle As the time draws near, Thinking of the birthday That will soon be here. Now the Advent candles Shed their Christmas glow, See them burning brighter With the truth we know

3 Lord, bless us together, As today we come, On this Advent Sunday To prepare for your Son, Who was born at Christmas, Leaving all above Telling us so clearly Of our Father’s love.

-------------------------------------------------------------- The Advent Wreath

The purple candles represent penance. One of which is lit on the 1st, 2nd and 4th Sundays of Advent. The Rose Candle is lit on the 3rd Sunday (Gaudete Sunday) representing joy. Finally the white candle is lit on Christmas Morning ~ the Birth of Christ.

Minister: Lord Jesus, Light of the world, born in David’s city of Bethlehem, born like him to be a king: Be born in our hearts at Christmas, be king of our lives today.

The 1st candle of the Advent Wreath is lit as the following verse is sung:

Come and light the candles on the Advent ring scattering the darkness till the world shall sing. We are all God’s people, waiting in this place Hoping that in Jesus we shall see God’s face.

Minister: In our watching and waiting All: Come Lord Jesus Minister: In our hopes and in our fears All: Come Lord Jesus Minister: In our homes and in our world All: Come Lord Jesus Minister: Come, Lord Jesus, bless us and surprise us. All: AMEN

The Collect;

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word;

Epistle Reading; Isaiah 2: 1-5

Our reading today is read by; Cub Leader, Cat Appleton

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

Gradual Hymn: Colours of day dawn into the mind

1 Colours of day dawn into the mind, the sun has come up, the night is behind. Go down in the city, into the street, and let’s give the message to the people we meet.

So light up the fire and let the flame burn, open the door, let Jesus return, take seeds of his Spirit, let the fruit grow, tell the people of Jesus, let his love show.

2 Go through the park, on into the town; the sun still shines on; it never goes down. The light of the world is risen again; the people of darkness are needing our friend.

3 Open your eyes, look into the sky, the darkness has come, the sun came to die. The evening draws on, the sun disappears, but Jesus is living, and his Spirit is near.

Gospel Reading; Luke 1: 57-59, 67-79

Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty saviour for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Sermon

Intercessions by Our Cub Group

Offertory Hymn: Make way, make way, for Christ the King

(please note: there will be a plate collection during this hymn)

1 Make way, make way, for Christ the King In splendour arrives. Fling wide the gates and welcome Him Into your lives. 2 He comes the broken hearts to heal, The prisoners to free. The deaf shall hear, the lame shall dance, The blind shall see.

3 And those who mourn with heavy hearts, Who weep and sigh; With laughter, joy and royal crown He'll beautify. 4 We call you now to worship him As Lord of all. To have no other gods but Him, Their thrones must fall.

Make way! Make way for the King of kings!

Make way! Make way and let His kingdom in!

During Communion Hymn: Hark the glad sound! The Saviour comes.

1 Hark, the glad sound! The Saviour comes, the Saviour promised long! let every heart prepare a throne, and every voice a song.

2 He comes, the prisoners to release in Satan’s bondage held; the gates of brass before him burst, the iron fetters yield.

3 He comes, the broken heart to bind, the bleeding soul to cure, and with the treasures of his grace to enrich the humble poor. 4 Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace, thy welcome shall proclaim; and heaven’s eternal arches ring with thy belovèd name.

Post Communion Prayer

O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear, he may not find us sleeping in sin but active in his service and joyful in his praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Post Communion Hymn: Mine eyes have seen the glory

1 Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; he is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; he has loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword: his truth is marching on.

Glory, Glory Hallelujah; Glory, Glory Hallelujah; Glory, Glory Hallelujah; his truth is marching on.

2 He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; he is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat: O be swift, my soul, to answer him; be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on:

3 In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, with a glory in his bosom which transfigures you and me: as he died to make men holy, let us live to make men free, while God is marching on:

4 He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave; he is wisdom to the mighty; he is succour to the brave: so the world shall be his foot-stool, and the soul of time his slave: our God is marching on:

and we hope this service will bring some comfort. We will be remembering all those whose funeral or interment was

connected with St Peter’s over the past year. If you would like another name to be added please let the clergy know. It will be a simple service of prayers, readings and hymns. As we take time to remember there will

be an opportunity to light candles in memory of loved ones. Refreshments served after the service. All Welcome.
