FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Peace and all good to everyone at San Luis Rey! The summer heat has turned to cold winds, and just as sud-denly as the weather has changed, we find ourselves standing at the First Sunday of Advent. Let me begin by wishing all of you a blessed Thanksgiving weekend. It’s good to stop for one day and stand together in gra tude, remembering all of our blessings. For many of our parishioners, Thanksgiving was bi er sweet, much like the first one celebrated on these shores. As we reflect on our tradi on and history, we remember that half of the pilgrims who set sail from Eng-land died of hunger and disease that first terrible win-ter. People were sick. Widows and widowers sat at table, suddenly, terribly alone. And s ll, as one community, they closed their eyes, bowed their heads over dinner and prayed with hope and thanks, “Qui transtulit sus -net”: “He [the God] who brought us here will sustain us.” They knew Jesus was with them as he is with us. My memories of Thanksgiving are much more comfort-able, but s ll bi ersweet. Si ng around the dinner table with my parents and grandparents, ea ng turkey and watching football. Now, they have gone home to God. And although I love this holiday very much, there’s s ll a bit of sadness. So I invite all of us to be aware of those around us who find the holidays difficult due to the loss of loved ones, or whatever problems they face. Some don’t have the funds for a fes ve meal. Some are simply all alone. For all of those who suffer during this holiday season, and in the wake of the terrorist a acks in Paris, we turn with faith and love to that faith filled, pilgrim pray-er. “The God who brought us here will sustain us.” I in-vite you to join together tonight, Sunday November 29th, immediately a er the 5:00 p.m. mass in the Serra Center, to pray the rosary for the inten ons of an increase in compassion in the world, a care for the poor and lonely, and an end to terrorism. If you can’t join us, take some

me to pray the rosary on your own. It’s no accident that the first reading of our Advent jour-ney today is filled with hope –“The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah.” That promise is the coming of Jesus. I invite you to take me to step out of your ordinary rou ne during advent and take advantage of the many opportuni es to reflect more deeply on the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. From the Bilingual Advent Rec-oncilia on Services on Thursday, December 3 in Serra Center where we come together for the blessing of God’s

mercy, the Knight’s Christmas Dinner on Friday the 4th followed by the Christmas Concert at the Old Mission, to the beau ful Feast of the Immaculate Concep on on Dec 7th/8th, the Treasures of Advent Retreat with Bill Bis-choff on December 5th in the Retreat Center, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe from the 9th thru the 12th, Simbang Gabi and Las Posadas from the 16th to the 23rd and all our wonderful Christmas Liturgies, as well as Mary, Mother of God on January 1st. These events prepare us to love, desire and recognize Jesus in our lives, that we might see the Christ in Christ-mas. As one family, we remember to “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good; his mercy endures forever.” (Psalm 118:29) Fr. David Gaa

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

On this first Sunday of Advent, Jesus warns about the end me; be vigilant, spiritually awake, pray, avoid self indulgence, spiritual malaise, and a preoccupa on with anxiety. Jesus advises against a lifestyle of earthly pleas-ures and worry. These will not ma er when the Lord asks for an account of our stewardship. Stewards realize their lives are not just about the here and now. They know themselves to be reflec ons of God’s ac ve presence in the world and witnesses of the Lord’s promises. As we begin this season of hope, let us reflect on the prac cal effect of having every waking moment in our lives dedi-cated to the Lord.

Padre David Gaa, OFM

Párroco
