At the Called Meeting of the Session on August 20th, seven new members were welcomed. They will be introduced to the congregation in the coming weeks. At the Stated Session Meeting, also on August 20th, June 9th was confirmed as the date for 2019 Mullen Lecture Series. Dr. Mary Brown Bullock will be the featured speaker.

SESSION NEWS

In David McCullough’s wonderful

book, “The Wright Brothers,” he describes how Wilbur and Orville Wright succeeded while others with superior education and funding failed. The Wright brothers held on doggedly to a faith that human beings could fly. They paid careful attention to what the best science had to teach them, as well as what they could learn from observing the flight of birds.

But the most important part of their story is that of their partnership. Wilbur and Orville supported each other, encouraged each other, trusted each other, and worked together with a small but faithful team of friends and family toward the same dream. Their relation-ship was so tight that they operated together as one, drawing upon each other’s strengths and compensating for each other’s weaknesses. Neither one of them could have accomplished what they did without the other. The Wright

brother’s story portrays the power of partnership.

The successful partnership of the Wright brothers comes as no surprise to the Church. Following Jesus Christ is never a solitary endeavor but is always a call to genuine partnership. It’s an endeavor to trust, support, encourage, and work with one another.

All our endeavors as a church are a work of partnership. Of note, an act of partnership will occur on Sunday, October 7, with our “Empty Bowls” luncheon. Please come and partnership with others at this luncheon to give support to those in our community who will need assistance with food through the Highlands Food Pantry. We are grateful that we can help people in our community in the name of Jesus Christ, the one who is the first source of abundant life.

Mission Partners

On October 7th from 11:30 to 1:30, the Highlands Community will come together to participate in the eighth annual Empty Bowls event, which will benefit the Highlands Food Pantry. This event is made possible by The Bascom Center for the Arts and First Presbyterian Church. The Bascom has provided studio space and equipment for potters to make over 250 hand-thrown bowls. In addition, professional potters and wood turners have created several bowls of exceptional merit to be offered at silent auction. First Presbyterian Church of Highlands will host this event in Coleman Hall, providing staff time and food, as well as many volunteers.

A delicious soup luncheon will be prepared and donated by local chefs. With the purchase of a bowl for $25, guests will receive soup, bread, dessert, a beverage, and the satisfaction of knowing that the purchase price will help to fill the bowls of those in need who come to the Highlands Food Pantry for assistance. Additional donations are always appreciated.

Currently, the pantry is serving about fifty families each week. As the winter months come, when seasonal jobs end, and warm clothing and heating costs rise, that number may increase to seventy. The proceeds from Empty Bowls are a significant part of the annual budget for the pantry.

August HAPPENINGS

Our special guest musicians on August 5th were the Highlands Men's Chorus, trumpeter Dr. Brad Ulrich, and pianist Dr. Lyn Burkett. The Children's Moment with Pastor Curtis was a delight. Being welcomed as new members to the church on August 5th were Keri and Piper Lewis, Carlton and Andrea Cole, Rachel Fraser, and George and Catherine Manning (see page 5). Welcome to First Presbyterian, new members!

On August 12 the Sacred Sounds Handbell Choir rang for the Prelude and Offertory, with Katherine Lancaster accompanying on chimes. Cindy Trevathan provided the Children's Moment to an enthusiastic group of youngsters, and flutist Linda Lancaster accompanied the Chancel Choir as they sang "How Can I Keep From Singing". We were honored to have Rev. Dr. George Wirth as our guest minister. Dr. Wirth is the Pastor Emeritus of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta.

August 19th was the annual Kirkin’ O’ The Tartan, featuring Cameron Nix, bagpiper. (see page 4). Curtis Fussell led a lively Children’s Moment, and a Congregational Luncheon followed our service.

The Children's Moment was presented by Pastor Emily on August 26th, and Pace McArthur, infant daughter of Susan & Alex McArthur, received the Sacrament of Baptism. We were privileged to have concert pianist Patricia Black who played a prelude and also accompanied the Carolina Women's Chorale. The group sang during the 11:00 worship service as well as presenting an afternoon concert in the sanctuary. (see page 4).

AUGUST HAPPENINGS

The August 22 Interlude featured vocalists from the Georgia State University School of Music. Artistic Director W. Dwight Coleman introduced "An Afternoon of Operatic Arias and Classical Art Songs" performed by sopranos Joanna Burrell and Rosa Scarlett Reece, accompanied by pianist Dr. Jonathan Crutchfield.

Summer and Bray McMahan of the Mountain Faith Band were crowd pleasers at the August 8th Interlude in our sanctuary. The brother and sister duo performed original songs as well as old favorite gospel and bluegrass tunes, accompanying themselves on fiddle, banjo and guitar.

Directed by Dr. Michael Lancaster and accompanied by pianist/organist Dr. Lyn Burkett, the Carolina Women’s Chorale gave an afternoon concert on August 26th. The concert also featured flutist Dr. Linda Lancaster.

Recent WCU graduate and former Chancel Choir intern Claire Lemke presented a vocal concert in the sanctuary on August 14th. She was accompanied by pianist Ann Tiner. Claire will begin graduate school at Northwestern University in Chicago this fall.

Catherine & George Manning

Dividing their time between Highlands and Atlanta, Catherine & George Manning have become Full Members. Catherine is a retired

partner of Price Waterhouse Coopers LLC and George is an attorney. They have a son and a

daughter.

Women’s Bible Study

We will be studying Session 4: Joy and Strength from our book Jesus Always, A Joy Filled Life on Wednesday, September 12th at 10:30 in the library. No previous study is necessary and books are available at the study. Please bring a sandwich and something to share for lunch. All ladies of the church and friends are welcome.

Men’s Prayer Group

The Men’s Prayer Group meets every Monday at 8:00 am in the Highlander Room. Meetings begin with devotion and prayer, and are followed by breakfast at a local restaurant. All men of the church are invited to join.

In Sympathy

Our prayers are being offered for Marc Hehn and his family upon the death of

his mother, Sibyl Hill Hehn, on August 4th.

Women’s Horizon Bible Study

Beginning Thursday, September 13th we will be studying God’s Promise: I Am With You by Amy Poling Sutherlun. This year we will be meeting in the Fisher home at 351 Cheney Lane.
