Dear Friends in Christ, Happy New Year! (At least I hope it is a happy one for you as you read this.) I always get a rush of excitement with the coming of a new year. I may not always be happy, mind you, but there is something about the new year that invites a fresh outlook on things, while also reminding us of our mortality. It is really a strange juxtaposion, when you look at it that way, isn’t it? The truth is we only have so much me on this earth, and the new year is a natural juncture at which we can take stock in our lives. How are we doing with the me we’ve been given by God? As we enter 2019 and take stock in our wellbeing, and perhaps make some resoluons for the months to come, I’d like to offer a resoluon possibility to you: Be Grateful! I know it isn’t as excing as making a commitment to eang beer, organizing your home, or losing weight, but being grateful will have a profoundly greater impact on your life than any of those other goals. It is also quite biblical. Take a look at this passage in Colossians 3:15-17: And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.Noce the overwhelming presence of gratude and thanksgiving, and how integral they are to a life in Christ? Can you imagine a life in Christ devoid of gratefulness and thankfulness? It is just not possible. At the same me, gratude doesn’t always come easy to us. HIGHLIGHTS First Presbyterian Church

It is really a strange juxtaposition, when you look at it that way, isn’t it? The truth is we only have so much time on this earth, and the new year is a natural juncture at which we can take stock in our lives. How are we doing with the time we’ve been given by God? As we enter 2019 and take stock in our wellbeing, and perhaps make some resolutions for the months to come, I’d like to offer a resolution possibility to you: Be Grateful! I know it isn’t as exciting as making a commitment to eating better, organizing your home, or losing weight, but being grateful will have a profoundly greater impact on your life than any of those other goals. It is also quite biblical. Take a look at this passage in Colossians 3:15-17:

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Notice the overwhelming presence of gratitude and thanksgiving, and how integral they are to a life in Christ? Can you imagine a life in Christ devoid of gratefulness and thankfulness? It is just not possible. At the same time, gratitude doesn’t always come easy to us.

The good news is that we can be grateful, even if it isn’t always a natural inclination. Here are some practical ways you can increase your gratitude (and grow in faith):

· Count your blessings. I know people who start and end each day by making a list of three (or more) new things they are grateful for. It can be as simple as being able to breath, or as specific as meeting with a certain person.

· End your day with a prayer of gratitude. Beginning with something you’re grateful for that starts with the letter ‘A,’ work your way through the alphabet.

· Share the feeling. Tell others what you’re grateful for. If you are grateful for them, say so! Gratitude is contagious, so make sure to pass it along.

· Keep a gratitude journal. Note how your newfound attitude of gratitude is making a difference in your life—on bad days and on good ones.

This is not an exhaustive list by any means, but I hope it will spark an interest in you to make gratitude a (bigger) part of your life. As part of my own commitment to gratitude, I want to say how grateful I am for you and for the opportunity to be your pastor. Praise be to God!

Godspeed,

New to FPCPA? Want to learn more about the congregation and our minis-try? Interested in joining the church? Want to meet Pastor Matt and some of our elders over a free lunch? If any of the above are true, come join us for Lunch with Leaders following the second ser-vice on January 13. You can sign up by contacting the church office or just join us at the table!

Happy New Year. Does the office have your

correct contact information? A few weeks ago, you should have received an email from us (Servant Keeper is the database), asking you to check your information. Please look for the email, log-in, set up your own password, and then double check all your information. You can add, delete and/or change anything you want us to know. We will be using this information to compile a new Directory this year. IF you did not receive this email, please let Gail know. You can email her at [email protected].

Sincere thanks to all those who sent messages of condolence on the passing of my husband, John. Your thoughts and prayers were appreciated by my family and I.

*********** Greetings First Presbyterian Church, As we welcome in 2019 and our faculty rooms are once again graced with homemade goodies for staff, and volunteers sign in to work with our students, we are reminded of the tremendous gift your congregation bestows on each of our elementary schools in Port Angeles. THANK YOU, on behalf of our teachers, support staff, and students, for your generosity of both time and talent in our schools. It truly takes a village to pour into the lives of our kids, and we are so thankful for your partnership in this journey.

Dear Presbyterian Church members, Thank you so much for the lovely soup dinner and swag that my grandsons made, the Christmas caroling and pageant. Your church has made an outreach to families and I appreciated being invited.

Sincerely, Annette Wendel

(Henry & Isaac’s Grandmother)

*********** Seven trees were decorated up beautifully and auctioned off along with other auction items for the Candy Cane Christmas Gala. The guests enjoyed the event and the food was marvelous. We had many helpers and supporters for the gala and it was a wonderful success. Thanks to all who contributed in various ways. Peninsula College and the JR ROTC have had a food and clothing drive to bring in necessities for TAFY clients. Other thoughtful businesses’ and community members have stepped up with donations of clothing and coats and hand warmers. TAFY appreciates every small act of kindness towards the homeless and at risk for homelessness. It take a village to made the community healthy and vibrant and we appreciate all the people who care about the less fortunate. Thank You!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH Scholarships Available for Graduating Seniors We have three youth graduating this year. Each will be invited to apply for our two scholarships (the Presbyterian Youth Scholarship and the Wilma and Boyd Turner Memorial Scholarship) to pursue his/her post-high school education. In January the applications and criteria for each scholarship will be mailed, and youth are encouraged to apply for either or both depending upon their qualifications. Unlike academic scholarships these awards are based on the individual’s participation in church life.

Ongoing Opportunities for Public Profession of Faith (Confirmation) Youth 12 and older are invited to examine their faith and, if they chose, make a public profession by joining the church. Typically, confirmation classes are offered to a group every two or three years. This year Session has approved a study titled “I Believe” that is designed for each participant to work individually with a Mentor through an eight-session course on Christian formation and instruction. This allows more flexibility in arranging meeting times to fit an individual’s schedule. In January letters of invitation to participate in this new study program will be sent to youth 12 years of age and older who are not already church members. Once the youth who are interested in participating are identified, each will be matched with an approved Mentor. In consultation with parents, and appropriate meeting place and time will be arranged.

SANCTUARY FLOWERS MINISTRY

BEGINS IN JANAURY

Flowers beautify the Sanctuary of our church, and are a gift to God and those who attend our worship services. Flowers are not in the operating budget of our church; it is our hope that our members and

friends will sign up to bring flowers. The bouquets will be placed on one or two pedestals next to the stairs at the front of the Sanctuary (depending on whether you sign up to bring one or two bouquets). The flowers will add subtle touches of beauty to our welcoming atmosphere. Donating flowers is a meaningful way to honor or remember a loved one or to celebrate a special occasion BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENT: Dedications will be printed every Sunday at the end of the worship bulletin. Due to the allocated space in the bulletin, your flower dedication will appear as follows: "The Sanctuary flowers are given today by [Given By] in memory/honor of [Name of Honoree]" or "The Sanctuary flowers are given today by [Given By] in celebration of [Event]." The Sanctuary flowers are given today by [Given By} in thanksgiving for [name or names of Honoree]. SIGN-UP SHEETS: We’re looking for donations throughout the year. If you’d like to sign-up for a particular Sunday to bring a bouquet of flowers, please use the sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall. Thank you for blessing our sanctuary and worship service! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the church office.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

The Nominating Committee is asking for your prayers as we begin the process of selecting nominees to serve as Elders and Deacons for the coming term. We will be seeking members of the congregation that are blessed with the gifts needed to serve in these important positions. If you know someone who would be a good nominee, or if you feel God nudging you in this direction, please contact Bruce Emery, Committee Moderator, at 360-477-8306, or by email at [email protected].

CHRISTMAS BASKET DELIVERIES On Saturday morning, December 22, six teams of two members each delivered 134 boxes of food, toiletries, cleaning supplies and paper goods to 26 families in our community. In addition, all families received a frozen turkey or turkey breast, a roasting pan and a Wal-Mart gift card. Everything was gratefully received by the families. Children exclaimed over the hot chocolate and marshmallows, others over the cheese. Mothers said everything included in the boxes would be used! Especially appreciated were the non-food items they can not purchase with Food Stamps: Kleenex, paper towels, toilet paper and cleaning supplies. Each of the five grade schools gave us names of four of their student's families who could use some help this season. The remaining families were of families known to church members or church members themselves. All names remained confidential until the boxes were delivered. Thanks to all of you who donated food, supplies or cash to this project! Also Thank You to all who helped assemble and deliver the boxes. This was a greatly appreciated project, thanks to all of you!

HIGH SCHOOL SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS RAISES FUNDS FOR TOYS FOR TOTS.

Seeing a need for gift donations, particularly for pre-teen and teen kids, the high school Sunday school class raised around $110.00 to purchase gifts for older children. Being aware that older kids tend to be

forgotten when toys/gifts are donated to programs like "Toys for Tots", our kids kept their focus on pre-teen and teen aged youth in the community. Their effort was rewarded by the Mission Committee which graciously agreed to match funds raised. With a grant total of about $230.00, our class headed to Swains, and put their savvy shopping skills to work, keeping in mind gifts that adolescent youth would like to receive on Christmas morning. A small cash donation was made to T.A.F.Y. with residual funds. The spirit of giving generously is definitely alive in our youth.

Godspeed,

Happy New Year. Does the office have your

Please look for the email, log-in, set up your own password, and then double check all your information. You can add, delete and/or change anything you want us to know. We will be using this information to compile a new Directory this year. IF you did not receive this email, please let Gail know. You can email her at [email protected].
