Dear Friends in Christ, Standing in a field of lavender recently, I was taking in the beauty of the purple flowers and enjoying the luscious scent of lavender when I began to noce the gentle humming sound all around me. It was the sound of countless honeybees dufully moving from flower to flower, plant to plant feeding on nectar and spreading pollen. Their work is subtle, but essenal to the producon of laven- der and so many of the plants and foods we enjoy. Rain, sun, and soil are all nec- essary for good crops, but all the careful tending in the world is for naught, if not for the bees and other pollinators that exist in God’s Creaon. It is easy to focus on the fruit that comes from the work of the honeybees, and neglect to credit their crical role in the process. Indeed, for as much as the He- brews talked of entering a land flowing with milk and honey, there would be no milk and no honey in the land across the Jordan, were it not for the bees. As the bees go, so goes our way of life. The same can be said about prayer. Prayer is to the life of Chrisan discipleship as bees are to our existence. Without prayer, the landscape of our souls will quickly become barren—picture a lavender field with no purple, and you get the picture. And yet, it is easy to overlook the role of prayer as it relates to a hearty and vigorous Chrisan walk. We might consider the outward lives of the saints and want to emulate their service by mimicking what we see, but without the commitment to prayer we can only get so far. Dear Friends in Christ, Standing in a field of lavender recently, I was taking in the beauty of the purple flowers and enjoying the luscious scent of lavender when I began to notice the gentle humming sound all around me. It was the sound of countless honeybees dutifully moving from flower to flower, plant to plant feeding on nectar and spreading pollen. Their work is subtle, but essential to the production of laven-der and so many of the plants and foods we enjoy. Rain, sun, and soil are all nec-essary for good crops, but all the careful tending in the world is for naught, if not for the bees and other pollinators that exist in God’s Creation. It is easy to focus on the fruit that comes from the work of the honeybees, and neglect to credit their critical role in the process. Indeed, for as much as the He-brews talked of entering a land flowing with milk and honey, there would be no milk and no honey in the land across the Jordan, were it not for the bees. As the bees go, so goes our way of life. The same can be said about prayer. Prayer is to the life of Christian discipleship as bees are to our existence. Without prayer, the landscape of our souls will quickly become barren—picture a lavender field with no purple, and you get the picture. And yet, it is easy to overlook the role of prayer as it relates to a hearty and vigorous Christian walk. We might consider the outward lives of the saints and want to emulate their service by mimicking what we see, but without the commitment to prayer we can only get so far.

So, from time to time it is good to retune our prayer lives so they can propagate the kind of life in the Spirit the Lord wants us to have. We do this by taking stock in what is working and what is not, by exploring new avenues for prayer and meditation, and by putting in the time. Soon, our prayers can be robust once again, connecting us to the presence of God, to the needs of others, and to the rhythms of the Spirit in the world around us. I invite you to take time in the lavender field of your soul and listen for the sounds around you. Can you hear the Spirit? Is the field fruitful and lush? Or is it time to call for the beekeeper?

Godspeed, Matt P.S. I hope you will join us for the Tools for Prayer experience each Sunday morning in August and at the B&B Family Lavender Farm on August 11 for the church potluck!

LAVENDER POTLUCK Sunday, August 11th @ 5:30 PM

Our church family invites everyone to a potluck hosted by B & B Family Farm. Come out and join us for a working lavender farm experience. Bruce and Bonnie McCloskey are the owners

of an old dairy farm now growing lavender at 5883 Old Olympic Highway, across from the Sequim Air Port. The old barn will provide our dining area on this three generational farm. The southern view overlooks the lavender plants with a back drop of the Olympic Mountains. The McCloskey’s will share some lavender information and show you a one of a kind bud cleaning machine. They’ll also have the new farm store, the Shoppe , available to peek into and a chance to have a farm walk-about if you’re so inclined. For the more adventurous or young at heart, there will be a tractor ride and choice of games: ping pong, or various ball games and some surprise games. Sign-up at the Connection Center, bring the kids and grandkids, your favorite potluck dish and enjoy the farm’s lavender lemonade.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD – Mission Committee The truth is that you, as a member or friend of First Presbyterian Church Port Angeles, you are part of an extensive inter-connected web of outreach through the church’s missions support. That outreach extends to Pakistan and Africa. It is present in domestic disasters through Presbyterian Disaster Relief. It extends to those living in the social margins (poor, immigrant, felon) through Tierra Nueva in Burlington, WA. Locally, you’re connected to TAFY, the Clallam County Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, MANNA, the community Friendship Dinners and Young Life. In the months ahead, “Notes From the Field” hopes to strengthen that sense of connection by providing you with anecdotes and information from the ministries that FPCPA supports. Until next time, exactly what is Justo Mwale? Person? Place? Program?

KEITH & JILL SHARKEY Keith grew up in Illinois and migrated to Washington to pursue his interests in hunting and fishing. Jill is native to Washington, born in Seattle and raised in Spokane. They met at WSU and married. Jill worked the first 5 years until their first child was born and then was a full-time mom until both kids were out of high school. The family vacationed in Port Angeles when they were living in the Shoreline area. After Keith retired from working for the phone company they moved to Port Angeles in 1997. Keith enjoys rifle and target shooting, freshwater fishing, woodworking, and machine embroidery. He is active in their homeowners’ association and in three gun clubs. Jill enjoys cooking, specialty baking, and genealogy. She works on community quilts for Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club. She volunteers for MANNA and has done fundraising for Hospice of Clallam County. Both Keith and Jill are members of the Community Life Committee here at church. They joined First Presbyterian Church for spiritual guidance and the fellowship of other followers of Jesus Christ.

CELIA WAALKES-DUFF Celia was born in California and grew up in Oregon and Idaho. In 1964 she moved with her husband to Alaska and spent 32 years in the Anchorage area. They raised 2 sons. Celia has 9 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She felt led to move to Port Angeles in 2002 because her sister needed her help.

Today, Celia is retired and is active with the Port Angeles Volunteer Police Force. Also, she has volunteered for MANNA for the past 8 years. Her hobbies include writing poetry, singing, and painting. She is already involved in the Prayer Shawl Ministry and the Bell Choir at First Presbyterian Church. In answer to why she joined the church, Celia penned this poem:

I feel the Spirit led me To First Presbyterian on Oak There God would be And the Bible would be spoke Pastor Wendy dedication Path preached straight and steep I knew I’d reach heaven’s destination If in my heart HIS word I’d keep.

Then Pastor Matt elected He preached love and hope Line upon line he selected And from the Bible he spoke We do not belong to one denomination But God’s church as a whole The Bible is our rule book As we prepare to make heaven our home.

They both enjoy traveling and have backpacked and/or trekked in a number of places over the years including the Andes, Brazil, the Himalayas, Australia, and Africa.
