Dear Friends in Christ, They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. This one sentence in Acts 2:42 tells us a lot about life among the first converts to Chrisanity. These were Jews who heard Peter’s Spirit-filled proclama- on of the Good News at Pentecost and commied their lives to following Jesus. As you might expect, their new life in Christ was marked by worship, study, and service, but equally important to them was bread breaking and fellowship (Greek: koinonia). When we consider the marks of Chrisan discipleship, one aspect that tends to get overlooked is fellowship—the pracce of koinonia. Koinonia is translated as “fellowship” in this Acts passage, but elsewhere in the New Testament it is translated as “communion [in the Holy Spirit]” and “sharing [in the body of Christ; in the gospel; in the Spirit; of faith].” As you can see, biblical fellowship is more than just sharing a cup of coffee with someone aſter worship. In its fullest sense, the fellowship described in the Bible means sharing our lives with one another. While this might begin with a cup of coffee, it doesn’t end there. A powerful and profound aspect of fellowship is that whenever two or more gather in Jesus’ name, the Spirit is at work building the es that bind us in Christ. It is easy to think this only happens when we face crises, significant life transions, or experience loss or trauma; however, the truth is these bonds are built whenever we spend me with one another. Relaonships formed around a cup of coffee, washing dishes in the kitchen, pounding nails at a Habitat for Humanity building site, in prayer, in small group sengs, and so on are all important to growing Christ’s body. Koinonia is an essenal part of the fabric of our Chrisan identy; discipleship is not a solo endeavor. HIGHLIGHTS First Presbyterian Church

Dear Friends in Christ, They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. This one sentence in Acts 2:42 tells us a lot about life among the first converts to Christianity. These were Jews who heard Peter’s Spirit-filled proclama-tion of the Good News at Pentecost and committed their lives to following Jesus. As you might expect, their new life in Christ was marked by worship, study, and service, but equally important to them was bread breaking and fellowship (Greek: koinonia). When we consider the marks of Christian discipleship, one aspect that tends to get overlooked is fellowship—the practice of koinonia. Koinonia is translated as “fellowship” in this Acts passage, but elsewhere in the New Testament it is translated as “communion [in the Holy Spirit]” and “sharing [in the body of Christ; in the gospel; in the Spirit; of faith].” As you can see, biblical fellowship is more than just sharing a cup of coffee with someone after worship. In its fullest sense, the fellowship described in the Bible means sharing our lives with one another. While this might begin with a cup of coffee, it doesn’t end there. A powerful and profound aspect of fellowship is that whenever two or more gather in Jesus’ name, the Spirit is at work building the ties that bind us in Christ. It is easy to think this only happens when we face crises, significant life transitions, or experience loss or trauma; however, the truth is these bonds are built whenever we spend time with one another. Relationships formed around a cup of coffee, washing dishes in the kitchen, pounding nails at a Habitat for Humanity building site, in prayer, in small group settings, and so on are all important to growing Christ’s body. Koinonia is an essential part of the fabric of our Christian identity; discipleship is not a solo endeavor.

REEL REFLECTIONS: EXPLORING FAITH IN FILM July 18 & 25, 6:30-9:00

What does true faith look like? What does it mean to suffer for the faith? What does it mean to bear your cross daily in a world that is hostile to Christianity? Where is God in the silence? Why do bad things happen to good people? You are invited to join Pastor Matt in exploring these questions and more as we watch and discuss Silence, Martin Scorsese’s 2017 film adaptation of Shūsaku Endō's 1966 novel of the same title. Silence tells the story of two Jesuit missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who travel to feudal Japan in search of their mentor (Liam Neeson) who is rumored to have renounced his faith

under threat of persecution. Join us on July 18 and 25 from 6:30-9:00 for a meal, movie, and discussion. Note: we will be watching the movie in two parts.

As we contemplate the meaning of Pentecost this month and celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to empower the disciples for Christ’s work, I invite you to consider the Spirit’s role in building the bonds of koinonia among us. Where do you sense the Spirit building relationships between you and other believers? What opportunities do you see to extend Christian fellowship to others? How do your relationships with other be-lievers help you grow in faith (and vice versa)? As I contemplate this myself, I praise God for the opportunities we have to share life in Christ with one another. I am cherishing every cup of coffee, every prayer, every en-counter at the store, and every moment at events like the All-Church retreat, that I’ve shared with you so far. I sense the Spirit at work in our koinonia and can’t wait to see how this will continue to grow in the months and years to come! Godspeed,

Sixteen people have joined our Church Family this year. Look for their biographies over the next few months. They are Wayne & Ruth Brown, Don Chesebro, Cherry Fox, Iantha Frazier, Stan & Nancy Jacobsen, Colin & Linsey Monaghan, Becca Paul, Tim Pearson, Keith & Jill Sharkey, Celia Waakles-Duff, and Jack Wise & Mary Ann Smith.

WAYNE & RUTH BROWN Both Wayne and Ruth are native to the Northwest. Wayne’s father was a pastor and the family moved multiple times, whereas Ruth was raised in Seattle. They met during their senior year at Seattle Pacific University and got to know each other in a ‘senior sneak’ retreat. Married a couple of years after they graduated, Wayne and Ruth moved multiple times following Wayne’s career as a college student affairs administrator. They raised 2 children. Wayne and Ruth spent their first eight years of retirement in Idaho. Three years ago they relocated to Port Angeles to be closer to family and live in a place they really wanted to be. They both enjoy reading and gardening; Wayne likes cooking and Ruth prefers canning. Each is involved in the community. Ruth volunteers at the Port Angeles Food Bank and Friends of the Library. Wayne is a Master Gardener and volunteers at TAFY. Likely, you have already met this active couple. They participate in the Adult Sunday School class and Wayne taught the ‘At Table with Jesus’ class. Ruth serves on the Mission Committee and participates in a women’s small group study. Wayne served on the Christian Education Committee, was recently elected as an Elder, and will lead the Mission Committee. Wayne and Ruth find First Presbyterian Church to be a good fit for them in their desire to grow as Christians.

IANTHA FRAZER Iantha was raised in Burien, WA. She moved to Port Angeles in 1972 to enroll in the Forestry Program at Peninsula College. After graduating she worked in forestry for a few years and then moved to the Department of Transportation to work as a draftsman, retiring as a Transportation Engineer after a 30-year career. Her second career for 10 years was a portrait photographer.

Today, Iantha is retired. She says her hobbies are gardening, gardening, and gardening! She also enjoys volunteering at the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center. Iantha and her husband, Jon, have a daughter. Even while faithful to her Catholic tradition, Iantha has been a familiar figure at First Presbyterian Church over the years. She has many friends in our congregation and on

occasion would stop in for worship or fellowship. As the photographer for the Centennial Pictorial Directory (2014), she enjoyed the feeling of community she found. God recently led her to transfer her membership to First Presbyterian Church. She finds worship a ‘breath of fresh air’ and appreciates the Bible-based sermons of Pastor Matt. Iantha looks forward to getting involved in the Prayer Ministry and growing in faith and fellowship with her new church family.

BECCA PAUL Becca grew up in the Bay Area of California. She attended the University of Oregon, where she met Matt at the very end of their senior year - just before he was to set off on a world tour and she was to head off to New Jersey to be a nanny. They both returned to Oregon where Matt used his degree to work as an auditor and Becca worked in child care. Three years after graduation, they married. Matt’s training and career in ministry took them to a number of locations, New Jersey, Colorado, Iowa, Oregon, and Washington. Becca and Matt had three children and through the years she continued in the early childhood education field, working with children from 7 months to 5th grade. Today she is a para-educator at Jefferson School in Port Angeles. Her hobbies include reading, singing, and hiking. Coming to faith as an adult, Becca found her baptism at age 23 to be a very powerful experience. She joined the church because she can be more fully involved as a member and use her gifts in ministry. Becca has felt welcomed at First Presbyterian Church and has enjoyed participating as a worship leader and choir member.

JACK WISE & MARY ANN SMITH Ohio is where Mary Ann was born and raised as a Catholic. Jack was born and raised in a Baptist home in West Virginia. Each made their way to Southern California where they met in a townhouse community. Mary Ann was employed as a Speech Pathologist and Jack as a Vice-President and manger in various banks. After retiring from the school system, she worked seven

years in Alaskan villages. They were married in 2006 and currently reside in Sequim. Both Mary Ann and Jack value their leisure time. Mary Ann enjoys traveling, taking pictures, scrapbooking, reading, and playing cards. In addition, she is an active member of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) and here at church is a member of the Community Life Committee. Jack is involved in the Masonic Fraternity. After spending time visiting other churches they were invited to come to First Presbyterian Church, and they have found their church home here. They seek to have a closer relationship with God in this community of believers.

ANNA’S EPISTLE I want to invite all of you to help me celebrate my birthday. The celebration will be on August 23rd at the Port Angeles High School Auditorium. We plan to have a kids’ tent outside with crafts, games and entertainment for them beginning at 6 p.m. Then there will be a concert in the auditorium beginning at 7 pm. Our own musicians will be helping lead the music and we’ll also have a couple of locally well-known artists featured. We’ll be doing lots of singing – basically an old fashioned hymn sing with some good old hymns as well as some good new songs. ONE VOICE, Big Church Night Out is what we’re calling this event. All of the churches in Clallam County are urged to participate. We want all 1205 seats in the auditorium filled. This will draw together Christians from all over our area to worship and celebrate the goodness of God. An expression of church unity is what we will demonstrate – a time of celebration together. No matter your age or musical taste we are asking all the churches to come together to celebrate WHO we are and WHOSE we are. “that we may be one so that the world may see” (John 17:2l) This is also a benefit for our first ever Habitat/local churches 2020 Faith Build in Port Angeles. 1st Presbyterian has been a leader, in the forefront of making this happen. Eleven churches in town are coming together to raise the funds and supply volunteers to build the house along with a family chosen by Habitat. This is mission work in our own community. Thank you all for your help and support. We are coming together to encourage each other, to appreciate our many shapes, sizes and expressions of our faith, knowing it’s a personal relationship with Jesus that unites us all. So help us by volunteering – we need helpers to make it all happen. There will be a mass choir. If you want to sing in it, please let Anna or Dan Cobb know. We’ll need stage hands, ushers, refreshment table folks, kids’ tent helpers and just general “whatever helps” type people. We’ll give you lots more details as the time draws near. It is also a celebration of my 83rd birthday. So you have a very special invitation to come and join me for this ONE VOICE, B. C. N. Please talk it up and invite everyone you know. Thank you all in advance for your help and participation.

Dear FPC family, Thank you for supporting me in my journey onward through college with the generous FPC Youth and Wilma and Boyd Turner Memorial Scholarships. College pre-sents an opportunity both exciting and intimidating, and nothing more for the latter than the cost. College is expen-sive. This is hardly new information, though it is now staring me in the face as a real problem to deal with. Thank you for helping to alleviate a por-tion of the stress college will cause. I will not forget everything my church family has done for me.

Evan Cobb ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Church Family, Thanks for making my 90th birthday so memorable, with cards and well wishes. It made me really feel blessed.

Margaret Whetstine ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

First Presbyterian Church, Thank you so very much for your kindness and generosity by lending the use of your beautiful piano and Sanctuary space for our rehearsals. The students from Libby’s Piano Studio and I are very thankful! May your building and your body be blessed!

INTERFAITH EARTH CARE COALITION The group wrote a statement of beliefs to guide our work. Martha Bell invites you to attend the coalition meetings on the second Tuesday of the month from 1:30 to 3:00 at St Andrews Episcopal Church. More importantly, Martha seeks a few people interested in finding ways to increase our awareness about Earth Care practices here at First Presbyterian. Please talk with her!!

We are a people of many faith traditions united by our common concern about climate change and our commitment to daily practice of care for the Earth.

We are informed and inspired both by ancient traditions and modern science. We seek a spirituality that is responsive to the gifts of nature in all forms, including the human capacities for reason and compassion.

We proclaim our kinship with all of creation.

We acknowledge the ways in which our current relationship with the Earth is broken, and we seek reintegration through an active spiritual practice of connecting to nature.

We acknowledge the effect of our actions on the greater whole, including those most vulnerable to a changing climate and compromised natural systems.

We accept our urgent obligation to build a new framework for the future based on reciprocity, reconciliation, and hope for the flourishing of all the Earth.

We seek to inspire change and to serve as an inspirational resource for individuals and our larger society.

We commit to open dialog and relationship with people of all faiths and beliefs. Together, we explore new ways of being that are vibrant, inclusive, and responsive to all life.

AV CLASS COMING Are you being called to serve?

Are you curious about the Video and Sound Systems at the Church? Do you have PowerPoint/Slide/Electronics skills?

We are planning an afternoon class on Saturday August 10, to train anyone interested to operate the sound and or video systems in the Sanctuary, and Fellowship Hall. We will not just sit and talk about how to power up the systems. This class will show you how to play music/videos/audio from phones/ipads/desktop & laptop. This should be a 2-3 hour commitment. Again, if you have interest contact Randy Schuchardt (360) 460-9955 to reserve a spot.

To EVERYONE who helped in any small way with OUR 11TH Sizzling Summer Sale a GIGANTIC THANK YOU!! Due to your generous and exceptional donations, help with setting up for the sale, organizing the

items, marking, cashiering, bagging, “floating” during the sale and the TREMENDOUS clean-up effort after the sale, we can declare that this was our MOST successful sale in eleven years. We were able to raise $3800 for FIRST STEP. All leftovers were taken to TAFY. Friends of the Library took the extra books, DVD’s, and CD’s. Four medium sized suitcases went to support foster children. Without your support, we couldn’t have our annual sale. We have an amazing church family, so willing to help others. Congratulations to all of you for your good work. Please continue to save your donations for the 2020 12TH SSS. We love raising money and giving it away!!

Thank you again from Community Life Committee.

TOOLS FOR PRAYER CLASS When you think about prayer what comes up for you? Spending hours telling God what you need, remembering everyone on your list who needs prayer? Do you feel guilty for not praying more? Maybe you feel like your prayer life doesn’t quite measure up when compared with other Christians. Perhaps you have a desire to pray more but you’re not quite sure how to make that happen. If so, the Tools for Prayer Class might be right for you. We will be offering Tools for Prayer between services this summer on August 4th, August 11th, August 18th and August 25th. Prayer has two components; what we do, and what God is doing in and through us. Often, we focus only on what we do. In this class our focus will be on prayer as learning to listen to God, who as Henri Nouwen writes, “constantly speaks but whom we seldom hear”. As we learn to listen to God, our lives become more like Jesus. Our part is to allow God to make some inner space where we can practice listening to his Word to us and where we authentically respond to his Word. In the Tools for Prayer class, we will share some old and new tools to help us listen to God, hear his voice, and respond faithfully. These are not techniques to master to become

experts on prayer. They are tools, which can open us up to new ways of paying attention to God, Scripture and the Holy Spirit. We hope the tools will help you to experience God’s love, faithfulness, grace and presence with you each day.

Dear Church Family, Thanks for making my 90th birthday so memorable, with cards and well wishes. It made me really feel blessed.

First Presbyterian Church, Thank you so very much for your kindness and generosity by lending the use of your beautiful piano and Sanctuary space for our rehearsals. The students from Libby’s Piano Studio and I are very thankful! May your building and your body be blessed!

occasion would stop in for worship or fellowship.

Godspeed,
