Stick ‘em up!New class, Bible studyannounced for summer

There will be a Summer Adult Sunday School Class beginning on Sunday, July 17 and going through Sunday, Aug. 7 that will meet from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

The class will be using Phil Moore’s book to guide in its study of Paul’s Letter to the Philippians. Vonnie will be the facilitator for this study. Please let her know if you will be participating in the class.

IN ADDITION, the Summer Women’s Bible Study will begin on Monday, July 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Donna Benstead’s home, 10899 Matteson Corners Road in Holland. Women will carpool from the church.

If you are interested in joining this study or need more information, call or text Donna at 863-2943. The group will be reading Your Beautiful Purpose by Susie Larson. The women will need to buy their own book and bring it along with their Bible each session. Also bring a lawn chair if the weather is warm enough to be outside.

Our youth director Luke Skura gets duct-taped to the wall of the Family Life Center on May 7 dur-ing Aftershock Youth Ministry. For what’s coming up for the youth, see page 5.

Sunday School Service is June 5!The Sunday School service, held annually the first Sunday of June,

will be held BETWEEN SERVICES this year, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m., in the sanctuary.

We invited everyone in our congregation to attend as the all those involved in Sunday School celebrate the end of the year.

The last day of regular Sunday School is May 29.

From the Pastor’s Desk...

My family recently had the privilege of taking some vacation time to Washington, D.C. It was a wonderful time of making memories with our sons. It was also a re-minder that when I am away from my duties as a pastor, I am never to take a vacation from being a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Summer tends to be a time when “church responsibili-ties” can get put on hold. Though with that said, no one who claims the name of Christ follower should see our discipleship that way. Summertime is actually a great example of how things can really grow, given the right weather conditions, and nurturing of the soil in which plants are planted.

I pray for you that this summer you will experience the presence of God in amazing ways. Though in order to “nurture the soil” of your walk with Christ, you and I need to not coast where our prayer life, study time, wit-nessing, and worship are concerned.

What are you planning on reading this summer? Con-sider challenging yourself to committing to a booklist from the wonderful selection in our church library this summer, and see what the Lord does with your efforts. There are so many great godly authors seeking the Lord’s guidance in their lives who can inspire your walk with Christ.

Where are the opportunities to share what the Lord is doing in your life this summer as you travel to different places visiting friends and family alike? See your journey as missionary in that regard, and watch what growth the Lord will bring through your faithful efforts!

Where ever you find yourself this summer, take time to worship from a deep heartfelt joy in the Lord. Don’t take a vacation from being filled up with the Spirit’s power and presence.

Who is the Lord prompting you to pray for? Don’t de-lay. Just do it and watch the growth in your own life and their’s.

Christian author and speaker, John Stonestreet tells a story of being a “9th grade Christian knucklehead ... without much faith of his own.” He was given an assign-ment with a best friend to visit shut-ins the last day of class before Christmas break at his Christian school in 1990. It would be an event that changed his world.

He and his friend Brain decided right away they did not want to go see “old people” so began to devise a plan to get out of their assignment! They decided to visit one per-son, and that’s how they met Mrs. Buckner. They shared an awkward experience of singing carols and a moment where she invited them to pray. They hoped their quick prayer was the end of things and they could make a quick escape ... but then Mrs. Buckner began to pray. John says,

“At that point, I’d been in the church my whole life. I’d heard thousands of prayers. But I had nev-er heard anything like this. I remember looking up just make sure that Jesus wasn’t sitting next to her, because it sure sounded like He was. She spoke to God as if she knew Him, with a simultaneous con-fidence and humility that only comes when you’re certain you’re being heard. ... Two years later, I woke up with the strangest feeling. Typically, I’d wake up thinking about basketball or my girlfriend, but I woke up this particular morning thinking of Ms. Buckner. And to this day, I have no idea why. But I ended up going back down that windy road to her house. “Ms. Buckner,” I said, “you probably don’t remember me, but two years ago I came here with my friend Brian. My name is John.”

“John,” she smiled. “I prayed for you this morn-ing.” From that point on, Ms. Buckner became a close personal friend. In fact, she prayed for me ev-ery day for the rest of her life. To this day, I cannot imagine what she prayed me into or out of. ... That’s what happens when you know Jesus, and treat oth-ers like the image-bearers that they are. God uses us, often in ways we can’t even imagine.”

Pray. Study. Share. Worship. Grow! I pray this will be your summer growth experience.

We have had a great year in Sunday School! Our children, youth and adults have had won-derful opportunities to grow spiritually and in the knowl-edge of the Bible and in their relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

We are most grateful for our teachers and facilitators who have given of their time, talents, and love to all of us.

Join us as we express our appreciation to the follow-ing people: Ann Marinaccio, Lisa Yaeger, Linda Blesy, Lynne Reynolds, Emily Dechow, Barb Blesy, Arlan Harvey, Jason Har-rington, Jill Narraway, Luke Skura, Tracy and Jeff Maybray, Donna Benstead, Mary Lou Forster, Mary Kay and Paul Wil-liams, Bud Vredenburg, Shirley Orton and Bill Skura. Thank you for leading us in our growth in discipleship.

Some of our youngest Sunday School children celebrate Pentecost by learn-ing that the symbol for the Holy Spirit is the dove.

Members of the Middle School Sunday School class engage in an activity as they learn about Jesus' teaching about the vine and the branches.

The Tuesday Morning Bible Study works on a prayer project that in-vites each of us to pray for those in our armed services. Everyone who attends church on May 29 received one of these prayer reminders.

The Bible Study meets Tuesday mornings from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Pastor Kevin is the con-tact person for additional information.

A prayer group gets together Tuesdays at 11 a.m. in the Prayer room downstairs. For info, contact Marion Labincki, 243-6058.

Small Group & Fellowship

The Mommy and Me Playground meets on the second, third and fourth Mondays of the month from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

This group meets so that mom-mies can get together to talk, en-courage and support one another while their pre-school age children play with their friends.

On Tuesday mornings the Men’s Group meets at the Apple Dumplin Restaurant at 7 a.m.

There is regular use of the Family Life Center (or the church’s backyard when it’s nice) each Wednesday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. for volleyball. Contact person is Mike Lux, 592-2635.

There is an exercise class from 8 to 9 a.m. on Mondays, Wednes-days and Fridays in the Family Life Center. Contact person is Shirley Orton, 592-4090.

Aftershock Youth Group will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 5 and 12 and then will break for the summer. There will be NO Youth Group meetings June 19 or 26.

The second annual Senior Night will be Wednesday, June 22 at 7 p.m. All seniors and families are encouraged to attend; the entire congre-gation is invited! Come help us celebrate our graduates!

On June 18, AYM will be holding a Car Wash-a-Thon in the church parking lot. Youth will be going around asking for pledges for the number of cars they can wash. Time for that will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine.

The ConfirmationCeremony will be held at the 11 a.m. service on June 12.

Events/Announcements

Twenty women from Springville First United Methodist Church, along with some guests, traveled April 15 to Houghton College to attend a nearly sold out amazing night of empow-erment and worship for women throughout Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania.

The event featured music by four-time Grammy-nominated Christian singer and songwriter Natalie Grant along with esteemed Christian au-thors and speakers Jill and Erin Kelly, wife and daughter of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills. The event also featured Family Life's Terese Main as the evening's emcee.

Terese Main opened the event shar-ing the stage with Jill and Erin Kelly in a “cozy living room setting” for their faith sharing. Because of their intense passion and desire to share their faith and hope, Jill and Erin impart their story around the country throughout the year. Their love for the Bible and the incomprehensible God who wrote it is contagious.

As their relationships and love for their Savior and His Word continue to grow, Jill and Erin continue to encourage others and bring hope to those who have none. They have a way to make each one feel personally connected with them.

We then were in for a concert by a Christian artist of amazing tal-ent. Natalie Grant is known for her powerful and soaring vocals, heart-gripping lyrics and passionate per-formances. She has since gone on to more than just music and awards; Grant has built a relationship with her

fan base on a personal level that goes well beyond the music. She connects with people as they see her as real, authentic and transparent. Natalie’s youngest daughter, Sadie, was travel-ing with her and what a little enter-tainer she is belting out music with her Mama – a delightful addition to Natalie’s concert.

A big thank you to Mary Lou Forster for publicizing and arranging for group tickets to insure our ladies could take advantage of this marvel-ous presentation. The evening came to an end too soon!

As of May 12th, we are experiencing a budget shortfall of approximately $1,700. Since the budget is in a constant state of change due to the variation in contribu-tions and expenses, this is currently a manageable deficit.

Center will be setup for a scout event.

The Scouts will have an Eagle ceremony in the Family Life Center from 2 to 5 p.m. on June 11.

A different scout event will take place in the Pavilion area on June 18 from 3 p.m. to dusk.

Also on June 18, the sanctu-ary will be reserved for a piano recital.

George Miller will be coming on June 26.

On June 24, the sanctuary is reserved for a recital.

On June 25, the Family Life Center is reserved.

Links Fore Love golf event will take place at Concord Crest Golf Course in East Concord on June 11 — a hot dog lunch sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church at 12:30 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start Discounts for golfers ages 12 to 18 accompanied by an adult are available.

A Summer Update from the Vaccaros

!

Our main ministry focus: Our main ministry is and will continue to be with ABC Christian Academy. We are very blessed by our ministry at the academy, but it can also be challenging at times. We live in one of the poorest countries in the world, yet the kids that we teach and see and build relationships with every day are not the poorest of the poor. Their parents are doctors, and lawyers, and government officials; and many of them are missionary kids. We are continually challenged in our own ideas of what missions is, and are constantly reminded that spiritual poverty is of far greater importance than physical poverty alone. As we seek to impact these children with the love of Christ, we pray that they will grow into leaders and individuals with the power and ability to truly impact their home country of Malawi.

Our goal is to train up a chi ld in the way they should go, with the hope that when they grow old they shal l not depart from it.

Vil lage Fridays: Our friend Gret Glyer started this ministry, and we have had the opportunity to partner with him a bit. His vision was to enable people from all over to make a difference in a Malawian villager’s life through a minimal contribution. Currently, he is undertaking a larger project of building a girl’s school called Girls Shine Academy. You can learn more about that, and get involved at villagefridays.com/education.

An update! As you probably all know, we are back in the States currently because our baby is due in June! In case you haven’t heard, we have decided we will be returning to Malawi in August for a second year of ministry with ABC Academy. You can read more about our decision and how we made it in our previous blog posts. We wanted to reach out to all of you now and ask that you pray about coming alongside us and what we are involved in in Malawi. We wanted to recap some of what we have been involved in this past year, and also share with you a bit of our vision for the next:

There is Hope: This is a second ministry that we have begun to partner with that works with Dzaleka refugee camp (which is about 40km from Lilongwe). They provide jobs and technical education as well as a youth program. They are actively teaching men and women from the camp carpentry, bricklaying and tailoring skills. Many of the people in the camp have been there for years, they cannot live elsewhere in Malawi, but they also cannot go back to their home country. There is Hope works with them to allow them to learn skills they can use to provide for their families. !

Our vision for next year: One of the things we are most excited about for coming back next year is the ability to hit the ground running in August. Much of this year was spent getting our feet under us teach, living in a foreign country and figuring out where to get involved. Our hope is that next year we can return with increased vision and focus.

- Dan will continue to coach and teach at the academy with increased responsibility and established relationships.

- We will continue to work with both Gret’s ministry and There is Hope. - Miranda will be teaching part time at the academy, but with a more flexible schedule is excited to be

able to facilitate women’s ministry on the campus and within our greater community in Lilongwe. - We will be able to get more involved with our local church here, and the ministries that they partner

with.

You are our greatest blessing. None of this past year would have been possible without people like you who supported us both prayerfully and financially. Thank you for trusting us, and the work that we are doing here. Thank you for partnering with us, and being our prayer warriors. We would like to ask you to commit to continuing to partner with us in prayer. We NEED a spiritual family surrounding us and lifting us up. Please pray for our time in the States this summer as we have our baby and spend some time with family and friends, and pray for our transition back in August. We are excited for what this next year holds, but want to be sure that we continue to seek the Lord and listen to what His plans are for us.

Next Steps: As we look towards a second year of ministry in Malawi, we know that a lot of things will be different. Obviously, we will be traveling back as a family of three (!) and that brings some additional considerations.

We do not want to assume that you wil l continue to support us,

or support us to the same extent— but we would love it if you would

consider partnering with us again!

We are looking to raise $1,800 per month to cover our living expenses. We also will need to raise about $1,800 each (total $3,600) to

cover round trip flights for the following year. If you feel like you would like to continue to be a part of our main support network, you
