Second Sunday of Easter
Divine Mercy Sunday
April 20, 2014
“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”
— John 20:29b
St. Kieran Parish
Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter. We continue to tell the Easter stories and share the joy of the Risen Lord. As we say every year, the Resurrection is too big for just one day. As Christians, we celebrate Easter for 50 days. The banners, flowers, and Holy water remind us that we have received new life through Jesus’ resurrection. Those who died with Christ in Baptism also share in his resurrection. Our music joyfully reminds us that we are an Easter people and called to bring new life to others. We ask God to continually help us to be His light in our families and communities. Happy Easter! Today at our 10:00 AM liturgy our parish children will be receiving their First Holy Communion. Through the work of their parents and catechists, these children have been prepared to meet Jesus in the Sacrament. Their communion reminds us of our own communion and the many since then. We find strength in the Eucharist, and so we receive often so that we can meet the challenges of daily living. We pray that our First Communicants and each of us remember the gifts we receive when we gather and take Jesus into our lives.

Today the Chrysalis Community Center is having its Fourth Annual Ladies Spring Fling in Crawford Hall. The Chrysalis Community Center offers youth programs and community services in the South suburbs. Admission is $2.00 and guests can designate either St. Kieran or St. Agnes and $1.00 of the admission price will be given back to that parish. Ladies, this is an after Easter chance to pamper yourselves. The Spring Fling runs from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. Tickets are on sale once again for our Pasta Dinner on May 4th. The dinner begins at 11:00 AM and ends at 5:00 PM. Come join us for some delicious pasta and desserts. Bring your family and friends and make it a party. Tickets also are on sale for the Last Man Standing Raffles. See you next week. Finally, a big thank you from me for all of you who joined us for Easter and generously donated to the parish and the Easter decorations. Thanks also to all of our musicians and singers who gave their time and talent at all of our Holy Week liturgies. Thanks also to the Art and Environment team for their work at decorating the church for each of the celebrations of Holy Week.
Dear Friends, Congratulations to our First Communion Class of 2014! Thank you to all who have made this day so beautiful for these children and their families, including Fr. John, Fr. Tom, Deacon Emil Vasek, Mrs. Joanne Rossbach, the musicians, choir, greeters, lectors, altar servers, gift bearers, ushers, Eucharistic ministers, Arts & Environment Committee, Mrs. Mary Bailey, and all of the Religious Education volunteers. A special thanks to the 2nd and 4th Grade catechists, Mrs. Jean Lendi, Miss Maria Narcisi, Mrs. Mary Ellen Ayala, and Mrs. Delia Ambriz. It really does take a parish to celebrate the sacraments! May God bless all of you for your generosity of time and spirit. Next Sunday, May 4, we will celebrate May Crowning at the 10:00 a.m. Mass. All children of the parish are invited and encouraged to participate in the procession, which takes place just before the final blessing. Please send your children to the church vestibule immediately after Communion, so that we may organize them for the procession. After the crowning, we will hold your children in the back of the church, and, weather permitting, will process to the grotto in front of the rectory to pray a decade of the rosary. In the case of inclement weather, the children will be moved to the vestibule to await their parents. I hope to see all of our parish there.
Happy Easter!
Teri Klopp

Our final Market Day© sale for this academic year is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27. Flyers will be available in the church vestibule and the Religious Education Office by mid-week.
Did you forget to place an order? You may order online at www.MarketDay.com and pick it up at a GFS store near you. We will still earn a portion of the normal proceeds.

The St. Kieran Religious Education office appreciates your support of this fundraiser.
St. Kieran Children’s Choir
will hold a rehearsal on
SATURDAY, MAY 3rd,
from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
St. Kieran Subsidy Payments are Available!
St. Kieran is prepared to offer subsidy payments for families of the parish who wish to have their children attend a Catholic school within the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Subsidy payments are equal to the difference between non-parishioner and parishioner tuition costs at the school of your choice.
To qualify for these subsidy payments, you must be an active parishioner of St. Kieran Catholic Church, which means you must,
(1) Attend Mass on a regular basis, (2) Support the parish through your stewardship
of time, talent and treasure.
Subsidies are paid directly to the school of your choice. St. Kieran needs the following documentation:
(1) Copy of the completed registration form from the school,
(2) Copy of your tuition statement indicating annual payment required,
(3) Copy of the school tuition schedule showing difference between parishioner and non- parishioner status.
If you would like further information on this opportunity, please call the Rectory Office and talk to
Sandy Vasek.
COME TO
THE BIBLE STUDY!
No Experience Needed St. Kieran will be offering a three part Bible Study entitled "Matthew: The King and His Kingdom." The fifty minute DVDs will be presented by Jeff Cavins. The series has been granted the Imprimatur by Justin Cardinal Regali, Archbishop Emeritus of Philadelphia.
This wonderful exploration of the book of Matthew will certainly help us gain a better grasp of the message of God's love for us. Prior to each session, participants will be asked to read a chapter or two of Matthew's gospel. These familiar chapters can be read fairly quickly, giving a brief overview to better absorb the DVD.
The first of the eight week sessions continues until May 13th. The second session will be held this fall. The final eight week session will be Spring, 2015.
All sessions will take place on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2:00 in the school library meeting room. Discussion follows each presentation.
Please come. Bring your bible and join the No Cost sessions. Since our chairs lack the comforts of home, you may wish to bring something cushy to pad your seat.
For more information call Lynn Hume: 708/757-3663 or email: [email protected]

Give to Feed Those Who Hunger and Thirst
After Jessica lost her job, it was hard to put enough food on her family’s table. Sometimes her two children went to bed hungry, and she and her husband skipped meals. The Catholic Charities Casa Catalina pantry provided emergency food until Jessica found work.
More than a quarter million people rely on Catholic Charities food pantries in Cook and Lake counties. Last year, the need increased 20%. Please give on Mother’s Day to support Catholic Charities. To learn more, watch a video at www.catholiccharities.net.
