RINGING OF THE CHURCH BELL

WELCOME AND GREETING

*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: We have heard about the storied fires of God: fires that lead lost people

in the wilderness at night and burn without consuming a green-leafed bush; and fires that come down from heaven on the wings of Elijah’s prayer to consume the faint hearts of false prophets.

People: In this season of Pentecost, it is the spirits of ordinary people that catch fire with joy, consuming the attitudes and customs that divide them, creating goodwill between them all.

Leader: The Spirit that is Holy appears in those who discover and delight in each other.

People: May it again be so! May such flames dance in us. May we be set on fire with the possibility of sharing life in love. God has put all things into the gentle hands of Christ, who rules all things with righteousness and peace.

Leader: Gather to know the immeasurable goodness of God, to exalt in the One who grants us grace.

People: We come together to bless God for all we have seen and heard. Leader: Rejoice that God has come in Jesus Christ to save all creation.

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN #10 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! NICAEA

THE OPEN DOOR June 11, 2017 Volume 17, Issue 24

Pastor’s Message What Is Baptism?

On this Sunday when we celebrate four baptisms, I thought it would be a good time to remind you how we think about and practice baptism in our church.

What is baptism? As it says in our UCC Book of Worship, “The sacrament of baptism is an outward and visible sign of the grace of God. Through baptism a person is joined with the universal church, the body of Christ. In baptism, God works in us the power of forgiveness, the renewal of the spirit, and the knowledge of the call to be God’s people always.”

While some Christian churches practice either infant or adult baptism, in our church we practice both. Whenever we meet with a family who is considering having their child baptized, we always offer them the opportunity to have either an Infant Baptism or a Service of Infant Dedication. Neither ceremony is complete in and of itself. In both instances, the child must be offered an opportunity to make their own adult affirmation of faith either through Confirmation or through Adult (or Believer’s) Baptism.

In infant baptism, we understand that a four-way covenant is being formed: between God, the parent/s (and sponsors/godparents), the congregation, and the child. This covenant is a holy pledge that the child be raised “in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.” Because this pledge is central to our understanding of infant baptism, great care is taken to make sure that all those involved are sincere in making this pledge. And because of the congregation’s central role in baptism, this sacrament is always celebrated within the worship life of the congregation. There are rare exceptions to this, in particular when the child or adult’s life is in danger. In those extreme cases, any Christian may perform the baptism.

One way in which our church practice of infant baptism differs from others is that we do not require church membership by the parent/s for the baby to be baptized in our church. This is based on two factors. First and most importantly, we understand that one is baptized into the Universal Christian Church not into a particular sect or denomination. One isn’t baptized Catholic or Lutheran or

9

Congregationalist; one is baptized Christian, therefore specific church membership is not of primary importance at baptism. Commitment to raise the child and be active within the Christian Church is. Second, we understand that in our increasingly mobile society, many young families are on the move and, when they have children, are often not yet established in a church community. It would be inappropriate to require them to make a commitment of specific church membership before they are really ready and able to do so. We do, however, require parent/s, sponsors and/or godparents to be baptized Christians. Without this indication of their own commitment to Christ, it would be inappropriate for them to undertake the responsibility of supporting or raising someone else in the Christian faith.

If you listen carefully during baptisms in our church, you’ll notice that in the first section of the liturgy the same words aren’t always said. In fact, we use several different liturgies. This is done to remind us that the specific words are not as important as the essential commitment. And it helps keep us from the danger of rote recitation—saying the same thing so often that we no longer hear what is being said. The words that are repeated at each baptism, however, are the Prayer of Blessing over the water and the words that accompany the Act of Baptism.

You may also notice that, as we make the sign of the cross in water on the person’s head, we do not say, “I baptize you…” but rather “You are baptized…” This serves as a reminder that our celebration of baptism is a church practice that points toward a spiritual reality. When we celebrate baptism in our church, we supply the water and the promises but it is God through the Spirit who performs the baptism. As John the Baptist said, “I baptize you with water… he will baptize you with fire and the Holy Spirit” (Luke 3:16).

Save the Date for Habitat’s Interfaith Build Dedication!

Saturday, June 17 • 2:00 PM

On Saturday, June 17, the Spring Interfaith Build home will be dedicated.

This is an opportunity to see what our church members and those of the other faith communities can do to change lives and improve the Fox Valley. Your presence validates the power of working together and creates positive attitudes toward those of other faith beliefs.

The time of the dedication is 2:00 PM at the build site at 1919 N. Meade St. (across from the former AMC). There is no on-street parking or parking in the hospital lots, but parking is available on side streets and in the ThedaCare lot north of the build site. Hope to see you there.

Appalachia Service Project 2017 Fall Trip September 23–30

Rainelle, West Virginia

We need your help!

This year, our church will help sponsor the cost of framing a house in Rainelle, West Virginia. This area was hit by devastating floods in June 2016 and we are returning for a second year to help with rebuilding. We are looking for construction crew volunteers to help do the framing.

“Warmer. Safer. Drier.” That is the mission of the Appalachian Service Project. This will be our fourth rebuilding trip with ASP. Each service trip has been an incredible experience for all of us participating; we do our part and turn the project over to the next arriving crew. Amazing work gets done!

If we bring a willingness to work hard and a desire to connect with the families with whom we work and with each other, lives are transformed. Please prayerfully consider the role you might play in this service opportunity. We would like at least 12 volunteers from our church to help with this important task of framing a house.

12

The cost of the trip is $100 plus travel expenses; the $100 fee is due upon registration.

Please sign up soon. Call or email Valerie Schultz with questions regarding the trip: (920) 915-8008.
