COMMUNITY SERVICE COUNCIL ACTIVITIES

Ongoing Toys for Tots Community Council member clubs collect Toys for Tots throughout the year. We present them Service to the U.S. Marine Reserve at the annual Presidents Night Dinner. Ask your Membership bring a new toy to an event – this is an easy way to collect a lot of toys for a worthy cause. Toys should be non-violent, not gift-wrapped and no stuffed animals. Make sure batteries are included with any toys requiring them. Pop-Top Pull Tab Collection

The clubs collect the pop-top pull tabs from aluminum cans. The tops are donated to the Ronald McDonald Houses – the tops are recycled & the proceeds go to the wish list for the Houses. NEW WRECK OFF OF SANIBEL ISLAND

Florida divers have a new shipwreck to explore. The World War II ship the USS Mohawk was scuttled 28 miles off the coast of Sanibel Island on July 2. It is now an artificial reef for Florida divers and anglers and is a veterans memorial. The county’s Marine Services Program and Reefmakers LLC, a Key West company that specializes in sinking ships as artificial reefs, was scheduled to scuttle the 165-foot World War II Coast Guard cutter at 11 a.m., but it was delayed by two hours.

Just before 1 p.m., there was a loud explosion, debris flew off the ship and it slowly descended to the bottom of the Gulf. It took just three minutes to sink below the water line. Joe Weatherby and his team took two months in Fort Myers Beach preparing the rusted ship, removing hazardous oil and readying her for her final destination. “She’s still got her propellers, she’s still got her guns and her life raft back on board and you never ever, ever see artificial reefs going into the sea looking like this,” Weatherby said. Six charges were placed on the USS Mohawk and detonated at different times, allowing thousands of gallons of water to rush into the ship at once so that it will sit right side up.

Sunday morning crews towed the ship to its final destination and anchored it in preparation for the sinking. The props were put back on, so from a diver’s perceptive, it’s as if the boat did sink accidentally and it looks like it was operating when it went down,” explained Jeff Miller, President of the Coastal Conservation Association. Recent reports from divers indicate that there are already as many as 5 goliath grouper calling this new wreck home.

INTERNATIONAL BEACH CLEAN UP DAY Saturday, September 15 Rainbow Beach, Chicago, IL

This annual event is the world’s largest one-day volunteer effort to clean up the aquatic environment. The event is coordinated by Ocean Conservancy and Project Aware.

This year the Council will be working with the Atlantis Divers. Without dive volunteers thousands of pounds of trash would remain “out of sight, out of mind.” Participating in International Cleanup Day is a great way for divers to give back.

Rainbow Beach is located at 2873 E. 75th Street (75th Street and the lake).

WHAT TO BRING Bring Your Own bucket, gloves and reusable water bottle. Help us cut down our waste. Wear closed-toed shoes, sunscreen and a hat. Bring an extra layer, like a sweater or jacket, in

case it is cold. Sometimes the wind coming off the lake can be chilly.

Wondering what you might find?. Here is a list of the top ten items found world-wide, according to the Ocean Conservancy. 80% of the items found are made up of these items:

Cigarettes Cups, Plates, Forks, Knives & Spoons Caps/Lids Glass Beverage Bottles Plastic Beverage Bottles Straws, Stirrers Plastic Bags Beverage Cans Food Wrappers & Containers Paper Bags

As of now there will no diving at this event, it will be just a beach clean-up. If this changes the clubs’ will be notified.

Many thanks to Judi Stephens for sending this. Reprinted from the Ronald McDonald Charities Newsletter.

RECYLE WITH RONALD (MCDONALD THAT IS)

Did you know that 1,267 pop tabs equal one pound of aluminum? This year the annual “Recycle with Ronald” pop tab drive was again hosted by United Scrap Metal. With their help Ronald McDonald Charities raised over $30,000 to support the building of the new Ronald McDonald House in downtown Chicago. We appreciate the incredible efforts of our supporters who collect pop tabs year round.

There is a new Ronald McDonald House being built to service the new Childrens Hospital in Chicago. They will have loads of things on their wish list. Your pop tabs can help. All the funds collected go to purchase items on the Houses wish lists.

You can bring them to any Council meeting or hand off to your club rep. You might think you only have a few and it won’t matter, but it does. If we get just a few from every council member it adds up really quickly. Please keep them coming!
