Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation (FIRO) is a theory of interpersonal relations, introduced by William Schutz in 1958.

Based on this theory Schutz developed a Behaviour measuring instrument that contains six scales of nine that he called FIRO-B.

2

Page 3: FIRO - B

The FIRO - B examines the way one typically act with other people .

The answers to FIRO - B questions put

someone within a range of scores. One may be on the high or the low end of the range or somewhere in-between.

It helps to become more aware of one’s own interpersonal behaviour habits.

The scores and descriptions are a guide to how one can view interpersonal relationships at this point of time and will help to think about strengths and weaknesses.

We can also use this test for assigning a job to someone.

FIRO-B technique was created to measure or control how group members feel when it comes to three interpersonal needs,

1. Inclusion 2. Control 3. Affection/openness

5

Page 6: FIRO - B

FIRO - B Inclusion results describe how much one want to include other people in his/her life and how much attention and recognition one want from other - not in close one to one relationships, but with people in general.

FIRO - B Control results describe the way one usually react to taking charge of situations or being directed by others. They examine categories like authority, responsibility, decision making and influencing.

FIRO - B Affection score results describe – the need to form close and personal relationships with others. It seeks to determine how one can balance the desire for warmth against the desire to maintain distance and independence.
