Send news to [email protected] Fire Ravages LA Wildfires continue to burn in and around Los Angeles after charring huge areas over the weekend. KKGO/Los Angeles Sr. Manager/Programming Charlie Cook checks in with Country Aircheck, marveling at today’s 95-degree heat, in addition to the destruction that took place in the traditional country strongholds of North Los Angeles and Orange County. KKGO, he says, has not been impacted directly. “A couple of stations up in Ventura/Santa Barbara county were affected late last week by the North fire,” Cook says. “No problems this weekend with the Sayre Fire (Granada Hills/Sylmar) or the Radio Reacts To CMAs Music fans powered Wednesday’s (11/12) 42nd Annual CMA Awards broadcast to strong ratings, but all viewers are not equal. So we asked several Country radio decision makers for their thoughts on Country’s Biggest Night. WMZQ/Washington & WPOC/Baltimore PD Meg Stevens found the show, “Extremely entertaining. Lots of music with a decent balance between artists who sang hits and those who sang new music. The only errors seemed to be when mics weren’t on – Hillary Scott, Reba and Brad Paisley at the beginning of “Start A Band” all had this happen. Overall, it was a hip, good looking show. Great idea to have Shania present. “I loved Leslie Ponder introducing Carrie Underwood. It was an extremely touching moment. And a huge highlight was what the artists were saying about country music being real and about real people. It goes with all the things we say on air.” Asked if she heard anything that affects programming decisions, Stevens says, “The new Rodney Atkins is a smash! We got calls on it and featured it the day after the show.” KTOM/Monterey PD Wes Poe noticed, “They did a much better job of covering the radio awards than the ACM. And the sound for the most part was right on. Clear Channel’s WDTW/Detroit PD John Trapane will join Capitol/ Nashville as Dir./Southwest Promotion Jan. 1, 2009. He will be based in Houston, TX and report directly to VP/Promotion Steve Hodges. “John’s programming and promotion experience and accomplishments, innovative thinking, creative approach to this business and his total love for music and artistry make him the perfect addition to the Capitol Records promotion team.” said SVP Jimmy Harnen. Prior to joining WDTW, Trapane worked as APD/MD at KIKK, KILT and KKBQ/ Houston. He’s previously served as Southwest rep for Dreamcatcher and Giant/Reprise Records. My tunes: Music that shaped My Life Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild discusses her most important songs, albums or concerts.1. The Oak Ridge Boys: This was the first concert I remember seeing as a little girl. We listened to them a lot growing up, obviously that had a huge influence on my love for harmony. My favorite Oaks song was “Leaving Louisiana” by Rodney Crowell. 2. Jonatha Brook, Plumb: I had the pleasure of seeing Jonatha many times as she would pass through Nashville. I’m such an admirer of her writing. My favorite line she ever wrote was from

this record: “you can make the world your apple, take a bite before it sours, you can make the world your charm or your chain.”3. Dolly Parton, “Jolene:” My parents were big fans, especially in the Kenny and Dolly duet days. She was one of the first female singer-songwriter influences I can remember. “Jolene” is still as current and relevant sounding as the day it came out. 4. John Mellencamp: We have had the chance to get to know John over the last few years; he’s been a great encouragement (as only John can be) in our own writing and recording. Last summer John called and asked me to sing on a record he was working on with T Bone Burnett. The songs were amazing and it was a great honor. At the end of the day we were inside the studio talking and snapping a few pictures when John and T Bone started playing and singing their favorite Dylan songs. I stood in between feeling like a silly schoolgirl and wondering how I had gotten there. I was completely mesmerized and unequivocally inspired. 5. Bruce Springsteen, Los Angeles, Oct. 31, 2007: I was already a fan, but this live performance impacted me in a way I will never forget. One of the best shows I have ever seen. Magic had just come out and the crowd knew every word to every song on that record. I’m glad I had the opportunity to experience standing on the floor with all the fanatical Bruce fans and understanding up close why he is the icon he is. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: I know they probably sold a whole lot of records, but I never got A Flock Of Seagulls. Didn’t like the hair, didn’t like the outfits, didn’t like the music. Sorry. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: Mindy Smith’s One Moment More is a brilliant piece of work. It feels like an old friend because I’ve listened to it so much. She has the voice of an angel. When I get to heaven, I want to sound like Mindy.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: If you have lived at all or stopped to contemplate who you are, then you will understand John Mellencamp’s “Longest Days.”
