About the Collection

Michaan’s Auctions is proud to present the third offering of fine Chinese glass from the Ina and Sandford Gadient collection. Their exceptional glass was a virtual sell out in previous offerings, and this sale proves to be spectacular yet again.

The Gadient’s enthusiasm for fine Chinese glass began in the early 1970s. The collec-tion grew as the Gadients traveled extensively for their international real estate business. Now some forty years later, they are among the most prominent Chinese glass collectors in the world. The outstanding quality and variety of the glass they have acquired sets their collection apart from many others and features rare pieces from the Qing Dynasty.

The exquisite museum quality collection is a result of their diligent study and under-standing of Chinese glass as well as their early, loyal focus on the then undervalued, but highly sophisticated, art form. Pieces from their collection have often been exhibited in museums, with some exhibitions exceeding one hundred pieces and lasting for up to twelve months.

Among the valuable pieces being offered in this sale are lot 8075, a transparent ruby-red glass bowl, lot 8078, a four-color overlay-decorated blue glass jar from the late Qing Dynasty, lot 8079, an opaque yellow bottle vase from the late Qing Dynasty, lot 8080, a turquoise-blue bottle vase with a Qianlong mark from the late Qing Dynasty, lot 8077, a clear glass baluster vase from the late Qing Dynasty, lot 8081, a rare ‘snowstorm’ and multicolor tiered glass vase with a Daoguang mark and of the period, and lot 8076, an imperial yellow ‘lotus flower’ bowl from the late Qing Dynasty. This selection of glass was amassed from and reflects the Gadient’s world travels throughout the 1970s and 80s to locales such as London, Hong Kong, Honolulu, Singapore and Geneva.

Provenance: From a private Southern California collection. Inherited by descent and originally acquired circa 1970.

Note: One of the most popular decorative themes for rhinoceros horn cups is that of the lotus plant, and especially the lotus plant with its leaf and flowers carved as a group. It is important to note that the present cup shows the carv-er’s ability to effectively utilize the entire solid area of the horn by removing most of the material inside in order to carve a group of long delicate stems, including the sprig of lychee and water plants. The material removed would have most likely been used for medicinal purposes. The carving is further tied near the base with a narrow leaf to give strength to the delicate openwork design. A ‘lotus’ cup with the same form portrayed on the present lot, is from the Arthur M. Sackler collection and is illustrated in Thomas Fok, Connoisseurship of Rhinoceros Horn Carvings in China, 1999, p. 141, no. 92. Another similar cup with the same subject matter, dated to the 17th century, but without the lychee fruits to the exterior, and from the Edward and Franklin Chow collection, was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, April 8, 2011, lot 2703.

Only two other closely related examples appear to be known, one sold at Christie’s London, March 29th, 1966, lot 171, and one recently sold at Sotheby’s Paris, June 9th, 2010, lot 43. Bells of this type were known as bianzhong and were usually assembled in graduated sets of sixteen, providing twelve musical tones with the four repeated notes in lower or higher octaves. They were also suspended in two tiers of eight attached to tall wooden frames, as depicted in a Court painting by Guiseppe Castiglione entitled, ‘Imperial Banquet in Wanshu Garden’, illustrated by Chuimei Ho and Bennet Bronson, Splendors of China’s Forbidden City, The Field Museum, Chicago, p. 52, pl. 42. The bells were arranged in accordance to their thickness and their respective musical note was determine; a set is illustrated in Life in the Forbidden City of Qing Dynasty, The Forbidden City Publishing House, 2007, p. 50, no. 50 (see fig. 1). When struck, the present bell resonnates a musical note of A. Bells of this type were known as bianzhong and were essential in conducting Confucian ritual ceremonies at the Imperial altars, for-mal banquets and during military processions. It has been noted that in 1741, Qianlong set up a Music Division for court music and the specified melodies of his choice for the various court func-tions prevailed into the early 20th century, op. cit., The Field Museum, p.52.

Fine Porcelains and Works of Art from the Reynold Tom CollectionLots 8195-8206

About the Collection

The first offering of the Reynold Tom collection at Michaan’s Auctions took place in December of 2011 and proved to be a great success. A substantial contributing factor to this success is due to the many fine porcelain plaques which all sold for numerous times over their high estimates. Many desir-able pieces from the Tom collection, including fine porcelain plaques, are being offered yet again, whose quality is sure to please the most discriminating of buyers and collectors.

Born in Oakland, Reynold Tom is of Chinese descent and has always had a love affair with Chinese art. Collecting pieces from auction hous-es throughout the 1970s, his passion and appreciation of Asian artistry continued until his passing. His import and wholesale business often found him in China and Hong Kong, which aided in his hobby leading to a truly personal and unique collection. It includes, but is not limited to, many decorative objects such as fine carvings, scrolls, furniture, porcelains, figu-rines and books.

A combination of a true labor of love and a life long passion have resulted in a wonderful collection based on artistry and craftsmanship. With a keen eye for quality and the exquisite, Mr. Tom has left behind works of art worthy of genuine appreciation.

The majority of the porcelain plaques being offered in this sale can be attributed to the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic Period, both of which were significant in the development of the porcelain plaque industry. Mr. Tom appears to have selected pieces with expert precision. All the porcelains were accumu-lated from a 1974 Sotheby’s Hong Kong sale, with only the finest late Qing Dynasty pieces being personally selected by Mr. Tom. Highlighting the collection are two framed circular plaques offered as lot 8205. The pieces were painted by Cheng Men, who was a master at creating painted porcelain plaques for the Impe-rial Factory in Jingdezheng. The two plaques each depict an idyllic landscape in the Qiangjing style. The scenes allude to the highly sought-after tradition of landscape paintings developed during the Yuan Dynas-ty (13th-14th Century). Lots 8201-8204 also feature porce-lain plaques attributed to Cheng Men’s contemporaries. There is no doubt that Cheng Men and his contempo-raries were the visionary pioneers of painted porce-lain plaques. Their substantial influence inspired several generations of artisans who specialize in the genre of painting fine porcelains.

ASIAN ARTS DISCLAIMER:We are aware of the many types of treatments and/or enhancements used today on jade. The purpose is to improve their appearance, i.e. color and/or clarity. Techniques like bleaching, dying and impregnation are just a few techniques known today. These treat-ments are not detectable using standard gemological procedures. Not all are permanent. Prospective buy-ers are therefore reminded that unless otherwise noted in the description(s),1 it must be assumed that some form of enhancement may have been used.

PROPERTY MADE FROM OR CONTAINING MATERIALS FROM ENDANGERED OR PROTECTED SPECIESProperty that contains any percentage of material made or potentially made from endangered and/or other protected species of wildlife are, as a courtesy, marked in the catalogue with the symbol “ * ”. Michaan’s Auctions does not accept any responsibili-ty or liability for failing to mark such lots. Such material includes, but is not limited to, ivory, tortoise shell, crocodile skin, whalebone, rhinoceros horn, some species of coral and certain woods.

Prospective buyers are advised that several coun-tries completely prohibit importation of property made, all or in part, of proscribed materials. Some countries require special permits, such as a CITES permit, from the relevant regulating authority in the countries of exportation and importation as well. Potential buyers intending to import the property into another country should be familiar with the rel-evant customs laws and regulations prior to bidding on property containing wildlife material. Regulations may vary as the U.S. prohibits importation of articles containing material(s) from species it has designated endangered or threatened if the articles are less than 100 years old.

It shall be the potential buyer’s sole responsibili-ty to research and satisfy the requirements of any laws and regulations that apply to the import and export of property as described in the aforementioned paragraphs. Prospective buy-ers must also note that the inability or delay in obtaining permits, licenses or other permissions to import or export property containing poten-tially regulated wildlife material will not consti-tute a basis for rescission or cancellation of the sale of said property or the delay in payment of purchased items in accordance with the Conditions of Sale.

received to the original purchaser. “Forgery” for the purposes of this provision, is defined as a work cre-ated with the intent to deceive.
