Selections of Tibetan Buddhist Art from the Phineas Schwartz CollectionLots 9099-9118
About the Collection
Mr. Phineas Schwartz has been an avid art collector for over twenty-five years, specializing in Asian works of art for the past ten years. As a certified art historian, his interest in art lead him to studies at the American Society for Appraisers as well as the College for Appraisers. Professionally, he has held senior executive positions at the University of Califor-nia, Charles Schwab & Co. and at a nationally recognized health care organization in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Throughout the years, Mr. Schwartz has personally sought Dr. Mark Levy’s mentorship during his path of art acquisi-tion. Dr. Levy’s expertise was called upon to authenticate the religious pieces from his collection in this sale. He has also graciously provided authentication letters to accom-pany each religious piece that is sold. Dr. Levy has served as an art critic and is currently the Senior Art Historian at California State University.
The religious pieces in the sale consist of sixteen Tibetan Buddhist bronze figures and four related ritual implements spanning a period of over five hundred years. The choice selection of gilt-bronze figures and ritual implements represent some of the finest works in the art of Tibetan Buddhism. Outstanding pieces are seen in lot 9099, a large bronze figure of Vajrasattva dated to the 15th/16th century, as well as lot 9101, a large gilt-bronze figure of a Bodhisat-tva from the Ming dynasty. Another desirable piece from the collection lies in lot 9107, an exceptional 18th century repousse gilt-bronze figure of Amitayus. Tibetan Buddhism art collectors should find great interest in lot 9116, a rare bronze ‘lotus’ mandala. The floriform mandala features closed articulated petals in the form of a lotus bud. These types of mandalas were originally made in northeastern India during the Pala period (9th-13th centuries) and today very few examples remain.

In Tibetan Buddhism the Vajrasattva root tantra is Dorje Gyan, or “Vajra Ornament”. Vajrasattva practices are common to all of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism and are used both to purify obstructions so that the Vajrayana student can progress beyond Ngondro practices to the various yoga and also to purify any broken samaya vows after initiation. As such, Vajrasattva practice is an essential element of Tibetan Buddhist practice. In addition to personal prac-tice, the Vajrasattva mantra is regarded as having the ability to purify karma, bring peace, and cause enlight-ened activity in general.
Vajrasattva holds his definitive vajra in his right hand, which is raised up to his chest, and the bell in his left hand, held just above his thigh. The two attributes repre-sent a duality that the deity resolves within himself. The vajra or thunderbolt, the Tibetan dorje (Lord of Stones), represents the active, male principle, which is the com-passionate means to enlightenment. The bell is the Perfection of Wisdom symbolized in the void (shunyata) of its empty yet productive form. The shapes of the vajra and bell also found analogies in the male and female sexual organs, the union of which creates the supreme bliss Vajrasattva himself embodies.

Crossbows were in use in China by the fifth century BCE and quickly became an important element in the war-fare of the Warring States period. Where other bows rely on the strength of the archer, the crossbow has a mechanical trigger, so that many releases could be made without tiring the crossbowman. The Chinese develop-ment of the crossbow depended on bronze technology advanced enough to allow the manufacture of accurately machined trigger-mechanisms. Early crossbows were por-table and mostly operated by one archer. They became popular for the defense of royal entourages and for hunting; the later multiple-firing crossbows were intended for military campaigns.

Estimate: $20,000 / 30,000
This censer served as a centerpiece for a five-piece altar set, usually flanked by a pair of candlesticks and two vases, or possibly one of four censers flanking a throne in the palace. The Qing dynasty Emperors commissioned the imperial cloisonné workshops under the supervision of the Palace Workshops (Zaoban chu) to manufacture cloisonné enamel pieces because of its glamorous and striking nature. It is well documented that cloisonné enamel ware was a favorite with the Qianlong Emperor. This censer not only served as a decorative palace furnishing, but in the case of this piece, was used in daily rituals, banquets and imperial ceremonies.
Compare a related censer and cover, but of a smaller size with archaistic motifs in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Enamel Ware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1971, pl. 20. Also compare an almost identical censer - but significantly larger - was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, October 8, 2006, lot 1077.

Ellsworth & Goldie Ltd. was a premier New York gallery for Asian works of art during the 1960s and 70s. Pieces purchased from Ellsworth & Goldie have since been fea-tured in esteemed museum collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA, and the Kimball Art Museum, Fort Worth, TX.
By the late 18th century, westerners had developed a fascination for the ‘exotic’ lifestyle of the Chinese. Thus, oil paintings depicting various Chinese social and domes-tic scenes were widely produced for export during the 19th century. Typically painted by skillful anonymous art-ists, these works offer excellent studies of Chinese archi-tecture, furniture and leisure activities during this time period.
A similar example of this lot is illustrated in The Decorative Arts of The China Trade by Carl L. Crossman, Suffolk, 1991, p. 159, pl. 75. Another example, depicting ladies within an interior setting, was sold in these rooms on December 18, 2011, lot 6402 for $12,870.

ENDANGERED OR PROTECTED SPECIESProperty that contains any percentage of material made or potentially made from endangered and/or other protected species of wildlife are, as a courtesy, marked in the catalogue with the symbol “ * ”. Michaan’s Auctions does not accept any responsibili-ty or liability for failing to mark such lots. Such material includes, but is not limited to, ivory, tortoise shell, crocodile skin, whalebone, rhinoceros horn, some species of coral and certain woods.
Prospective buyers are advised that several coun-tries completely prohibit importation of property made, all or in part, of proscribed materials. Some countries require special permits, such as a CITES permit, from the relevant regulating authority in the countries of exportation and importation as well. Potential buyers intending to import the property into another country should be familiar with the relevant customs laws and regulations prior to bid-ding on property containing wildlife material. Regulations may vary as the U.S. prohibits importa-tion of articles containing material(s) from species it has designated endangered or threatened if the arti-cles are less than 100 years old.
It shall be the potential buyer’s sole responsibili-ty to research and satisfy the requirements of any laws and regulations that apply to the import and export of property as described in the aforementioned paragraphs. Prospective buy-ers must also note that the inability or delay in obtaining permits, licenses or other permissions to import or export property containing poten-tially regulated wildlife material will not consti-tute a basis for rescission or cancellation of the sale of said property or the delay in payment of purchased items in accordance with the Conditions of Sale.

purposes of this provision, is defined as a work cre-ated with the intent to deceive.
