RISK management of natural disturbance

cyclones a case study on karachi.

Abstract:

We also discuss the Karachi is a disaster prone city. Global warming related hydro- meteorological hazards tend to occur with increasing frequency in the shape of sustained rains and strong winds. Cyclones have made landfall in the adjoining districts of Thatta and Badin.

Karachi is also located dangerously close to numerous fault-lines that can trigger a devastating earthquake, Storms and Cyclones though it has experienced milder versions. The City has also grown phenomenally in size over the past decades but the development of Infrastructure has occurred to very poor standards.

Flood water drainage system tends to get chocked even in moderate rains bringing parts of the City to a standstill. High rise buildings have proliferated with scant regards to relevant safety codes.Historical records substantiate occurrence of such a scenario, though in 2007 cyclones Gonu and Yemyin went past south of the City to impact coast of Oman and Baluchistan respectively.

Strong wind and rains generated by Cyclone Yemyin caused about 150 deaths in the City mainly due to felling of bill boards, electrocution and collapse of flimsily developed infrastructure.

It may also be noted that in all probability cyclone impact would spread much beyond Karachi to impact the adjoining districts of Thatta, Badin and Hyderabad City or even beyond.
