English 102Fall 2011By: Andrea Hewes
Reflection Over the course of the semester there are many things that I learned. The
things that I learned, I know, will help me with
my papers and my assignments for the rest
of my college experience. I also gained more
confidence in myself and my writing style.
Summary vs Analysis
Summary vs Analysis Summary Analysis
Summary: A brief paragraph describing and informing three or more of the following elements:
1. Who: those involved 2. What: the event or topic being
covered 3. When: time, period, era, night
or day 4. Where: the location, distance,
place 5. Why: the cause or causes 6. How: the process(es) Report: An extended summary
that delves deeper into more descriptions and details of the above elements
This was the most important thing that I learned this semester. I am still not completely comfortable with the
process but I am getting better
Analysis: examines the summary elements described above in order to look for their meaning in the following contexts:
1. Relationships, trends, patterns 2. Roles of people, places,
objects, situations 3. Consequences or results of
events, decisions and processes 4. Causes and their effects 5. Advantages and
disadvantages/ gains and losses 6. Strengths and weaknesses

This was the second poem that I analyzed this semester. I
learned that I enjoyed analyzing poetry and I am not
bad at it.
This was the first poem that I analyzed this semester. It was a
good experience and I enjoyed the assignment

Commas & MLA Citation
I have never been very good at comma placement. This semester has made me a
little more comfortable with comma usage in my papers.
It is always important to cite correctly. This is something
that I have become more confident in after this
semester.
Revising a College Essay
I always had that feeling of dread when I thought about revising a paper. This semester was a good
experience when it came to revision. I learned that it can be easy when taking in all comments and
suggestions.
Critical Response
The next analysis was done on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It was frustrating but a good learning experience
The last paper was my choice and I chose Jane Austen’s
Northanger Abbey. This was the hardest paper for me but I
was happy with the end result.
Monsters
It was a surprise to me that something that you see in horror movies can have a more profound meaning. It
is hard to know what that meaning is until you analyze what the author is trying to say.
Annotated Bibliographyo A bibliography is a list of
sources (books, journals, websites, periodicals, etc.) one
has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "references" or "works cited" depending on the style
format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).
o An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation.
o Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a
summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources.

It is always fun to learn something new, and writing an annotated bibliography
was one for me this semester.
Blogging
Blogging this semester made this class a little more
exciting. It also made me feel like I was apart of the
class.
A blog (a blend of the term web log)[1] is a type of website or
part of a website supposed to be updated with new content from time to time. Blogs are usually
maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other
material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly
displayed in reverse-chronological order. Blog can
also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a
blog. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog
