What is the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club?

Mission statement according to the website: "Here at our club, we are dedicated to improving, inspiring, helping, and stimulating the minds and lives of children in our community.  Our club is the positive place where kids can come for help, support, guidance and a whole lot of fun.  This [a $5 annual membership fee] allows up to help hundreds of children by providing them a safe and fun place to go to after school, no matter their needs."   http://www.dmbgc-cu.org/

What is the Don Moyer Pen Pal Program?

We created the Don Moyer Pen Pal Program as a means for providing any student who wished to participate at the

Club with a positive role model with whom they could converse with via letter exchange.

We partnered with the University's national service

fraternity Alpha Phi Omega (Alpha Alpha chapter) to match up kids from the Club with other college students

who wished to have a Pen Pal buddy.

Before beginning the letter exchanges both the kids from the Club and the college students filled out an

informational sheet that would give a basic outline for the members of what they were interested in.

The children and college students participated in two different letter exchanges throughout the course of the

Pen Pal Program.  We're having an end-of-the-year, MEET YOUR PEN PAL party this Friday at the Boys and Girls Club!

Goals and Objectives for the Don Moyer Pen Pal Program

We wanted the Pen Pal Program to give the children exposure to friendship through writing in a safe and

positive situation.

We worked with the children on writing skills and general 'how to write a letter" skills

This gave the children positive attention in a different form and allowed them an older, caring role model from a

different perspective- the Pen Pal perspective
