Do not go by the Looks

This is a great picture book named “Do not go

by the Looks” written in 2012 by Vanessa Esquivel

and Jorge Gonzáles, both Costa Rican writers from

the Universidad Nacional (UNA). As the picture of

this review shows, this story is about two kids Max

and Linda, and Tommy a wolf. Tommy wanted to

have friends, but everybody was scared of him

because of his huge snout, big teeth and furious

appearance. One day, Tommy found a friend “Linda”, but her parents do not let her

be Tommy’s friend just because he looked very dangerous. At the end of the story,

the wolf dies rescuing Max and Linda from drowning on a river. Until that moment

Linda’s parents realized that the animal they considered dangerous, was really a

good being since he risked his life to rescue the little kids. The purpose of this book

is to make children understand that appearance is not that relevant since feelings

are the ones they must value in a person.

In my opinion, the story has good and clear illustrations for children,

being helpful for those who cannot read yet. Besides, the language is appropriate

for the audience this book is focused on. The message that this tale shows is

great, due to some parents do not give the opportunity to really know how the other

people are, unlike, they tend to criticize and judge others by the way they look. And

although the end of the story is sad because of Tommy’s death, people can learn

to not go by the looks, as the title of the short story says, and in that way try to

discover who their real friends are.

Papaya’s Picadillo

Ingredients

1 big green papaya

500 grams of Ground beef

2 big red chopped peppers

2 chopped garlic

1 chopped onion

1 roll of chopped cilantro

3 tablespoons of oil

1 tablespoon of annatto

1 tablespoon of salt

Worcestershire Sauce to taste

Directions

1. Wash the papaya, peel it and take it out the seeds. Later, cook it in a pot with enough water for around 45 minutes until soft; you can try using a fork. Then, remove it, let it cool down and chop it finely.

2. Separately, in a hot pan, pour the 3 teaspoons of oil and fry the chopped pepper, garlic, onion and cilantro. Add the 500 grams of ground beef and season it with the teaspoon of annatto, the teaspoon of salt and the Worcestershire sauce, cook for around five minutes.

3. Later, add the chopped papaya to the pot, mix it well with the rest of the ingredients and cook everything them for 10 minutes.

4. Finally, serve and enjoy it.
