Here at STEP UP we like to find out the real artists behind the music in our arti-cle “BEHIND THE MU-SIC” by asking your questions to your favourite Grime art-ists.

Q. How did you cope as a group with the transition from school to the music industry?

A. “At the beginning of our career we found it difficult not to have the familiar security of people like teachers and stu-dents around us for support, it was a big step for us to take. By making the move into the mu-sic industry we knew that there was never any certainty that we would be successful, not knowing whether of not we would achieve our dreams was a change from the stability that we felt school gave us. As months passed by we became comfortable in our new urroundings and knew we had made the right decision.”

Q. Some people may com-pare you to girl bands like for example Mis-Teeq, how would you say you differ from their style of music?

A.“Being compared to a success-ful girl band is always going to be seen as a compliment to us as we know that we have similar styles: for example our band also features a large amount of rap-ping. But we consider ourselves to be different and unique in a way because we are braking through into a male dominated environment, show others we can be as good as them even perform to a higher standard.”

Q. Who or what inspired you to become apart of the Grime industry?

A.“Growing up in East London we would constantly be listening to this style of music because of its popularity at the time and it was considered as part of our culture, especially at secondary school we went to. Lunchtime would transform into the arena for the best rappers to show their talent off in a form of a battle show-casing their original bars to get the applause and respect of the crowd. Being in a male territory at the time it was intimidating, so we would sort of write and perform our bars to ourselves and close friends. We were grow-ing in support and we knew that we had something and getting over stage fright was a growing process.”

Q. Before music became your priority in life what were your own individual dreams & pas-sions?

A.JaZmine “Well I always had and interest in animals and at the time I thought I would be-come a vet, since then that dream has been pushed back into the distant future.”

A.Layna “I actually wanted to be an actress the celebrity fac-tor is what attracted me to it, I always wanted to live life in the fast lane and have my name in lights.”

A.Salisha “I personally had and I think will always have the pas-sion for fashion, so if my career in music doesn’t work out as planned you’ll be seeing my name on the labels of your new favourite clothes.”

Q. How did you react to the success of your debut single “On the other side”?

A.“To be honest the reaction was initially was amazing, we were so excited, getting a top 10 hit single is a huge achievement for anyone, especially if you are just starting out in the industry, it gave us a huge boost. It showed that there is an audience out there that enjoy our music but can also relate to our lyrics. This single meant a lot to us in indi-vidual ways, and as the majority of the song is rap the support gave us a shock.”

Q. How did you come up with the name of your group “IM-PACT”?

A.Uh..our name basically is what we as a band feels represents us, we are strong as a whole, and we started out to create an impres-sion within the Grime industry, making us a name while showing that if we can make it from a dream so anyone with a dream should as well.

This interview has been great, and I think your fans would have found out everything they need to know about your group. To finish this interview

Q. In three words what do you say to people that think that they can’t make it into the music Industry?

A.“NEVER, STOP, BELIEVING!”

FINAL THOUGHTI hope this inter-view has shown you dedication that has to been put in to become success-ful in following your dreams, if your like IMPACT and found your path in career at an early take the girls advise.
