Dear Parents,

Thank you to those parents and staff members who joined us for the AGM yesterday evening, we hope you found it informative.

There are many more annual events taking place over the next few weeks.

We look forward to experiencing the cultural performances and displays next week at the Secondary Campus's International Week. We hope as many parents as possible can help us by

contributing international dishes for the Food Fest enjoyed by the students next Friday.

Another highly anticipated event held in Term 2 each year is the Alice Smith School Charity Dinner, being held at the Shangri-La Hotel on Friday 28th March. It's a unique event, whereby

our Sixth Form students not only take on the sometimes challenging roles of waiters and waitresses but also provide the evening's entertainment too. All parents are invited. There just a

few tables left and tickets are on sale at both campuses.

Finally there are two other major events this weekend. KLASS are hosting the ISAC athletics meet on behalf of Kuala Lumpur's international schools at the stadium in Universiti Malaya.

There is a large number of students from both campuses proudly representing our school; I wish them the very best of luck and hope they enjoy the day. The KLASS Fun Run and Picnic

takes place on Sunday at Equine Park in aid of cancer research. Thank you in advance for your support of this worthwhile whole school fundraising event.

Have a good weekend.

Best regards

KLASS Fun Run & Picnic - this Sunday!28th February 2014

PTAPTA

This year’s annual KLASS FUN RUN will be held at the Secondary Campus, Equine Park on

Sunday 2nd March 2014 from 8.00am to 9.00am.

We look forward to the usual big turnout and support for this charity event. Funds will be channelled to support Cancer research and treatment in Malaysia. We are lucky to have the

involvement of the PTA who have organised a picnic for after the run, until around noon. Please click here for more details.

We will also be looking at promoting the Fancy Dress element of the Fun Run and encourage students to come in fancy costumes.

Whilst the fun side is paramount on the day, the serious side of this event is the money to be raised for a very worthwhile charity. You will find a link below for the sponsorship form. So, if

you feel able to raise more money for the charity through collecting sponsors, that would be very welcome. We will also be charging a registration fee of RM5 per individual or RM10 per

group, which will be collected on the day.

Please click here for the registration and sponsorship form.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Last week, I had attended Level 1 training as a British Schools Overseas (BSO) inspector.

The Department for Education in the UK put in place a voluntary scheme for the inspection of British schools overseas, whereby schools are inspected against a common set of standards

that international schools following the British curriculum can choose to adopt. BSO and the Department for Education in the UK have six approved inspectorates in operation around the

world and these are monitored by Ofsted. Schools meeting the standards will have their inspection reports published on the Department's website.

In 2011 Alice Smith School was one of the first schools in the world to be successfully accredited through BSO with one of these inspectorates and, as the requisite three years have now

passed, we are planning our next inspection for Term 1 in the next academic year.

There are not many times in a busy term where there is an allocated time to stop, take stock and look back on the schools achievements to date from an external perspective. The training

was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on how wonderful Alice Smith School is and how much our students benefit from the huge array of opportunities available to them. Following the

training, I will be sharing information about the inspection regime with leaders, teachers and Governors so that we can continue with our preparations for the inspection later this year.

Check out our new interactive Talking Wall which is currently speaking French!

In MFL, we use QR codes to make our children’s work more interactive. If you walk past this particular display, you’ll be able to read

some of our Year 5 children’s paragraphs describing where they live, where they come from, what nationalities they are and which

languages they speak. The novelty is that if you scan the QR codes attached to the children’s work; you will also be able to watch videos of these children reading their paragraphs out loud.

So watch out for our new Talking Walls and make sure you have a QR reader app installed on your tablet or your phone to be able to watch our videos ( e.g. “i-nigma” is a free and

recommended QR reader app).

You will find the French Talking Wall on the wall in the Early Years playground just along from the Assembly Hall.

initial consultations with the new caterers regarding the design of the student menus.

As a school, we are committed to providing school meals that are freshly prepared on site using high quality and nutritious ingredients.

With this in mind, we would like to form a parent food group to help oversee the process of selecting appropriate meals. We are particularly looking for anyone with a catering or nutrition /

dietitian background who can assist in analysing recipes, ingredients and the combination of set meals to be offered.

Year 2 have been hard at work rehearsing for this year’s production, 80 Days Around the

World.

This has been closely linked to their Geography, English and Science work

this term. The children were very excited last week to welcome some real-life adventurers who had been on their own travels,

driving from Malaysia to England!

Judith and Jon, friends of Savannah in 2S, showed the children how they had lived out of their jeep for 300 days as they travelled

through many different countries. They journeyed through snow, desert, cities and mountains and even managed to find some time

to visit some beautiful islands too! We were very lucky that our visitors had managed to find time during their brief stopover on the

way back to their home in Australia.

Year 6 had an amazing day trying out activities from World War 2, these included art, playing games, cooking, swing dancing and

becoming spies.

When asked Joe Patmore, Elijah Slade and Riya Chaure said:

The day was so fun with lots of things to do, our knowledge of the 2 World War improved because of this active way of learning; the swing dance involved a series of side steps, jumps,

ducks and twirls. Although the steps were hard and one of the manoeuvres (the leg over the partners head) could have spelt disaster, we did a great job and it was lots of fun, thanks Miss

Midl.

During the next activity we were given a task to go round collecting information but we had to do it like spies, undetected and unseen. It was great fun running around looking for the clues.

I’m not sure Miss McCullough would give any of us jobs as spies though…

We learnt how to play marbles, Newmarket, tiddly winks and cat’s cradle with Miss Key.

We settled down for some relaxing Art work with Mr Thorpe, shading the evening sky and cutting out the skyline of a 1940s city. Some of us designed 1940s fashion outfits too.

We made delicious biscuits with Mrs Kearton and Mrs Grimshaw which we got to eat at our quiz after lunch. This was a brilliant way to end the day and we teamed up to answer lots of

tricky questions related to the war.

World War 2 day was full of fun games and activities. All the Year 5s should look forward for it!

Dear Parents and Students,

Next week is International Week at the Secondary Campus. Through assemblies, activities, performances and a shared lunch at the

end of the week on Friday, we will recognise and celebrate the international diversity of our student population. I would like to extend my thanks to the Sixth Form staff and students for

planning and organising the week of activities, culminating in the food festival on the last day.

From Saturday to Tuesday, we have a group of professional rugby coaches from New Zealand running rugby coaching courses in conjunction with KL Saracens Rugby Club. On Monday

and Tuesday, a training session has been arranged by our secondary PE faculty for 40 teachers and coaches from all over SEA. The coaches are very experienced and high profile

including an ex-NZ player (and current NZ assistant coach) and also an ex-England international. We have also invited some local teachers from Malay schools to this event. My thanks to

the PE staff for coordinating this excellent development opportunity.

Saturday is the annual ISAC Athletics Competition and I would like to thank all of our staff who are assisting with the running of this major sports event this year. Best wishes to all of our

athletes who are competing on the day.

It is pleasing to see construction work progressing well on the main teaching block.

Kind regards,

After two months of continuous and heavy planning by the Interact team and prefects from the start of Term 2, we are very excited to

announce at the next whole school assembly the activities planned for International Week.

The main purpose of International Week is to promote international understanding; each day throughout the week a different continent will be explored. Activities vary depending on the

continent and culture of the countries and will be in a variety of locations around school. Not only will there be crowd pleasing performances (such as musical and drama performances) but

we will also have activities that will get everyone involved in the spirit of international week, like the House Origami competition held on Asia day. Unlike previous years, we will also be

holding a softball competition on America day and a meditation workshop on Friday, so all students can be involved whenever and wherever throughout the week. We will also be holding a

photography competition to exhibit the vast number of countries and activities our students have explored as well as the activities during the week.

Friday is International Day, where all students are invited to wear cultural dress or their national sports kit. This is a lovely, colourful celebration of diversity. In addition, the "Food Fest" is a

very popular event which allows students and teachers to sample foods from cultures around the world. Students are requested to bring food to reception on the morning of Friday 7th

March. Click here to read more about the International Week Food Fest.

From meditation to MUN, there is something there for everyone, and throughout the week there will be opportunities to get house points and embrace the diverse international culture we

have at Alice Smith.

Over the course of Term 2, the Sixth Form have been running a series of Higher Education

focused workshops for parents.

The aim of these sessions is to provide parents with information regarding the Higher Education application process and to provide further guidance for parents in their support of their

child(ren) through this process.

The content of the sessions is based on the material that the students receive during their Higher Education Programme in the Sixth Form, ensuring that all parties are ‘on the same page’

so to speak. As the Sixth Form continues to grow in size, this forum allows us further opportunity to speak directly with parents in preparation of their child’s transition into Higher Education.

The first four sessions were received very positively by the parents who attended and we are looking forward to the remaining workshop on Applying to US Universities which takes place on

11th March.

Previous sessions have covered the following:

1. Researching Universities

2. Introduction to UCAS

3. Supporting Personal Statement Writing

4. Applying for Competitive Courses and Universities

All sessions take place in the Sixth Form Learning Centre between 5:00pm - 6:15pm.

The remaining session offered is:

11 March Applying to the US: The process and applications forms (US)

Copies of each presentation and accompanying resources will be made available to parents and students following each workshop on the Parent Portal in Comms on the Useful Links and

Docs page and also on the FROG homepage > Careers and Higher Ed Guidance section.

As part of our annual PSHE programme in the Sixth Form, students have the opportunity to

opt into a series of life workshops in Term 2 of Year 12.

Given the success of last year, we would like to extend this opportunity to all our students and as such ask for parents help. In order to

increase the effectiveness of the interview workshop, we would like students to be interviewed by people that they do not know. The aim is to create a more ‘real life’ situation so that they

can reflect upon their performance and ready themselves more effectively for University and the field of work.

We will look to run three, 1 hour workshops on considering interview techniques; this is inclusive of students having an interview. The two training sessions prior to the interview will be led

by teaching staff. We are seeking help from our parent body to help conduct the interviews in the third session. The more parents that we have to help, then the more interview time and

effective feedback students will get.

We are looking at holding these sessions on Wednesdays 2nd, 23rd and 30th April from 1.45pm – 2.30pm. Volunteers can commit to any number of sessions to assist. For further

information and to consider how you may get involved, please email me at [email protected] to find out further details. Many thanks for your consideration; your help

makes all the difference.

Back in Term 1, students and parents were asked to give their initial requests for options. I

have now been able to work these into a plan for next year's timetable and in doing so

accommodate the vast majority of our students’ choices.

Earlier this week, parents/guardians of our Year 9 and Year 11 students received both an email and a letter about option choices for next academic year. This outlined your initial choices,

the option blocking and the assigned choices.

For a small number of students we were not able to give you your first choices. I know it’s a disappointment when this happens but we have been able to meet the first choice needs of over

98% of overall requests. If this applies to you, you should by the time of reading this have updated your requests.

If you have not received either of these communiques, please contact Ms Eirene Mutto ( [email protected]) and we can share these again.

Written by Sharon Hampton and Abhishek Chakravertty, Year 12/13

Over the course of the current school year, Sixth Formers have been given the opportunity to meet multiple university representatives

who visit our school.

We have had enjoyed visits from universities from a number of different countries, giving us the chance to grasp a bit of knowledge of the destinations in which we can head to. One of the

most common element is getting a university lecture in the Sixth Form lecture theatre by a representative from the respective university in which we will be briefed about the university itself

including topics such as courses that are being offered, the application process, tips on enhancing our personal statements and grade requirements. We have also been given the

opportunity to speak to these representatives during our lunch times to ask more specific questions and details about certain courses.

We believe that it is a great chance for students to get to know more about their university of choice and open themselves up to the other possibilities of courses, whether they are similar to

the one they hope to apply to or something completely different. It also gives us the opportunity to learn more about the careers we can pursue in the future and perhaps even work

experience for preparation before the application process.

Also the visits from the different universities have been an eye-opening experience to say the least. Most of the talks we receive have been in part, a breakdown of a specific course offered

by the university. While it may not have always been a course we wished to do, much of what we are told is transferable to other courses. Furthermore, the university lectures have brought

to light how different the same course can be at different universities and how different the application processes to universities in countries outside of the UK, such as Canada and Hong

Kong can be. With each university being so different, we think that having had so many universities coming to visit will allow us to make informed decisions later on this year.

In addition to the University visits hosted at school, the next British Council University fair will be hosted at KLCC on March 8th and 9th from 1pm-6pm

Touch Rugby - U16 Girls National DevelopmentTournament - KL Champions!28th February 2014

What a tremendous day and great achievement for the Under 16s Girls Touch Rugby Squad.

We are the Federation of International Touch (FIT Malaysia) Girls Under 16 Malaysia National Development Tournament 2014 - Kuala Lumpur Champions!!!

Yes that’s right…..CHAMPIONS!!!

KLASS on three!...one, two, three…..KLASS!!!

The Touch Rugby girls have been playing since the beginning of the year and previously as Under 16s had won third place at the ISAC Under I9s ‘B’ Division tournament in November last

year at the AISM.

The girls though did not want to finish there. They loved the game and asked to continue training. We have since met every Wednesday for an hour and the squad increased this to two

hours with an extra hour on Friday, as we got closer to this tournament. Real dedication shown in their effort to improve and put themselves in a position to compete at this FIT Malaysia

Touch Rugby tournament in KL.

Once again I can honestly say that the girls’ progress has been marvellous. All the girls that have turned up for training, that endured the trials and harsh selection sessions, deserve our

respect and an immense amount of praise for their effort and commitment. There is such a genuine spirit within the girls touch rugby community at KLASS, it truly is awesome.

We opened the tournament last Saturday with a good effort against one of the Open Women category teams – MRSM KULIM. The girls fought hard and pulled off a shock, though very

welcome 5-0 win, to hit the ground running.

Next up were the Scorpions, favourites by a country mile to take the overall Open Women category title. Conserving our energy a little, we battled and fought hard to a 15-0 loss. Next up

was a crunch Under 16 contest against MRSM TARU16. Having watched their previous game, the coaches put a solid game plan to the girls, targeting three key opponents’ players that

had skill and pace. A defensive effort of herculean proportions overpowered the opposition leading us to a 20-0 victory. The next battle was against the Open Women category Warriors.

Our squad, rotating substitutes as often as was possible, as the heat intensified, cruised to a 15-0 win. The squad was really developing a style of play that suited them and was proving

successful on the day; fast pressing defense and continuity through phases in attack.

Each game gave the girls the opportunity to take stock and consider what they had achieved and what they could learn from that. The coaches were struck by how the girls were able to

develop during the day, progressing their skills, positional awareness and tactical nous.

We were up next against the MRSM TAR Open Women category side. Having defeated their U16 team, they were seeking revenge. No way! Focus and a strong squad work ethic brought

us a 10-0 win. Our final qualifying game saw us outclass the MRSM KULIM U16 opponents for a winning score of 20-0. Some great attacking flair and determined defense allowing us to

run in four unopposed tries. This game in particular had the crowd in raptures as the real class of KLASS was beginning to send shudders through opponents, who were so in awe they

wanted their teams to be photographed with us…the girls were beginning to feel like celebrity superstars…and how they deserved the adulation.

But no rest for the coaches or players. One more game….the Under 16 Girls final was approaching. After seven hours of exertion under the sun, it was time. The final of the Federal

Territories FIT Malaysia National Development Tournament 2014 – Kuala Lumpur was to be contested between KLASS and MRSM TAURU16.

This was about putting our names in the history books, as the 2014 champions. The girls tired but still smiling and playing with determination played a solid game. The KLASS girls picked

up the challenge and pushed to the final hooter. Eventually winning the title, to be crowned as champions with a close 10-5 victory. Congratulations to all our players for the day. A full

squad where every player made a mark and all 14 played in the final! You all represented yourselves and our school fantastically. I am, as coach, exhausted but proud to have been able to

work with you. I have learned a great deal over the last weeks and in particular at the tournament about the true spirit of sport...play with desire and grace.

What a beautiful and awesome sport Touch Rugby is...KLASS on three...

U11 Girls Football Report28th February 2014

Pr imar yPr imar y Even tsEven ts

This year has seen the introduction of three girls’ football teams competing throughout the

term's football season in preparation for the upcoming U11 Football tournament.

This is a great advertisement for girls’ football, and a pleasure to witness so many keen girls embrace the game and play with vigour

and fun. Our young ladies have trained hard in their chosen positions, and produced a mixed bag of results so far. Our ‘A’ team have had convincing victories against GIS and ISKL, and

were unfortunate to lose against MKIS who only had two shots in the entire game!

Whilst our first team have displayed a penchant for powerful dribbling, our ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams show a determination to pass the ball. Whilst every game has seen us camped in the

oppositions half, our shooting still needs work. A couple of goals for the ‘B’ team have meant that they are still undefeated this season with a win and a draw, and our ‘C’ team have also

played well with a draw and a single loss.

The atmosphere around the pitch when the girls play is very supportive, often hysterical, as mums and dads scream their support for these eager footballing stars. So please feel free to

come along and support our young Lions as they show how the game should be played, with pride and teamwork.
