“THE ONE AND ONLY SULTAN RAHI”

1. This name needs no introduction as we all know about the contributions of Sultan Rahi in Pakistani Film industry.

He was the Pakistani Punjabi actor who appeared in 813 films in his career out of which more than 700 were in Punjabi and the rest were in Urdu films. He won 160 Film Awards. Some of his major films were “MAULA JUTT, KALAY CHOR, BASHEERAA, GOD FATHER and WEHSHI GUJJAR”.He also worked as a Senior Acting officer in “TABI PRODUCTION”.

Allah Wasai(Noor Jahan) known as the “Queen of

Melody”Madam Noor Jahan’s illness

and then her death in December 2000 was a major

set back for the Pakistani film industry.

she holds the highest record of film songs in the history of Pakistani cinema. She is also considered to be the first female Pakistani film

In 1996, Noor Jehan recorded her last song in Pakistan which was "Ki Dam Da Bharosa?" for the film Sakhi

Badshah (1996) and stopped singing due to failing health and newer trends in music.

In the '1980s and '1990s, Pakistan Television ran a musical series called TARANNUM. Noor Jehan had recorded a few pieces of that serial. But other than that, she had been in

semi-retirement for a few years battling her health problems. She died in Karachi on December 23, 2000

POSTERS OF PAKISTANI MOVIES

Titles of the movies

Vulgarity

Un-realistic Approach

Page 12: film industry in pakistan BY RANA

At present, movies are being made in a low quantity. Those too are mostly on typical Jutt, Gujjar, Chowdhry, Vadera,

or a specific clan. Another character, prostitute, is also very common one in Lollywood movies. Like we saw in

Majajan, Zill-e-Shah, Nach kay yaar manana, Sooha jorra, Gujjar da kharrak etc.

Whenever we look at these movies, we observe that, these movies strongly Lack of vibrant ideas, proper storyline, lack

powerful script, suitable casting and ‘original’ titles, repetitive themes, original stories and are more of based stories like having stupid concepts which are not good enough to attract the attention of audience during the

decline phase.

PAKISTANI CULTURE AND FILM INDUSTRY

Page 13: film industry in pakistan BY RANA

This is the time when Pakistani film industry was producing the kind of films that’s were not good enough to grab the attention of the audience, the ban from the indian movies

was uplifted and the blockbuster movies of bollywood were HUM APKE HAIN KON?(1994), Dilwale dhulaniya lejayn gy(1995), Kuch Kuch hota hy (1998) which ultimately

diverted the attention of the audience.

BAN UPLIFITING ON INDIAN MOVIES

Page 14: film industry in pakistan BY RANA

Indian movies were candidly rented and sold at no of rent-a-shops in each locality all over the country; Viewing Indian Movies on VCRs was a major source of family entertainment arranged on weekends and at

wedding ceremonies as a collective pastime; People spent hours in front of rented VCRs and television to enjoy Bollywood hits

Channels increases Bollywood’s Craze in 1990s:

Indian movies gained instant fame in Pakistan in the 1990s due to its easy, free and excessive exhibition on Satellite channels.

’Satellite dish’ arrived in the early 90s in Pakistan and channels such as Zee, Star Plus, Sony, B4U and MTV. With such a cut-throat

competition and multiple choices, people glued to their TV sets and their evening gupshup and gossips revolve around the Indian soaps

and films.

 BOLLYWOOD’S PENETRATION IN LOCAL

MARKET

Page 15: film industry in pakistan BY RANA

Film industry is a very important factor in any nation’s cultural development. In Pakistan where the film

industry was almost destroyed by the flood of indian movies, it is very heartening to see that there is still

some hope left.

Choorian: (A Direction of Syed Noor)A blockbuster film which was a remake of super hit film Mirza Jatt (1967). This film completed solo silver jubilees in Multan, Sialkot, Faislabad and Rawalpindi. this film continuously ran 56 weeks at Naghma Cinema Lahore and combined completed 290 weeks. “we cannot deny the contributions of Syed Noor during the decline phase of our industry who saved the Pakistani film industry from death.

Page 29: film industry in pakistan BY RANA

Instead of reviving the cinema , Pakistan is the process of rebuilding the cinema

We feel that The Pakistani film industry does not need to compete with Indian cinema in particular. It can co-exist on

a smaller scale and be effective as well as entertaining.

It is possible to attract audiences in Pakistan by producing movies which have a great story, even if the budget does

not allow for fancy production techniques

The Govt. should have a steady and meaningful policy for Pakistani film makers and as and incentive there should be

no taxation for at least ten years.

THANK YOU!

SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR THE REVIVAL
