Natalie is introduced to the strange (and aerodynamic) world of triathletes and meets a colorful cast of characters as she trains for the Nation’s Triathlon in Washington, DC, the largest triathlon in the United States. With the support of her new teammates, she digs deep to discover just how far she can push her mind and body. Winner of the Indie Spirit Award for Best Story at the 2016 Boston International Film Festival, Tri is the rst Triathlon-themed feature lm.  (Dir. by Jai Jamison, 2016, USA, 110 mins., Not Rated)

“West Side Story is nothing short of a cinematic masterpiece.”- Bosley Crowther,  e  New York Times

With just the right mix of amboyant theatricality, thrilling beauty and gritty realism, Romeo meets Juliet – or rather, Tony meets Maria – on the streets and rooftops of New York, and true love blooms … but their transgressive romance is taboo. eir rival neighborhood gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, will never accept the lovers’ star-crossed union, and trouble (as well as a lot of singing and dancing) ensues. Created by the musical dream team of Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins and Stephen Sondheim, and starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, George Chakiris, and the electrifying Ms. Moreno, this legendary 1961 lm won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Rita Moreno), inspired countless generations of musical fanatics and brought Shakespeare’s classic tale of teenage romance to vibrant life … only here, instead of Verona, the setting is 1950s New York City, and as always, the course of true love never, ever runs smoothly. A jazzy, snazzy, high energy classic that almost leaps o the screen (when it’s not breaking your heart),  West Side Story endures as one of the greatest musicals in Hollywood history.  (Dir. by Robert Wise & Jerome Robbins, 1961, USA, 152 mins., Not Rated)

3 SPECIAL ENGAGEMENTS

e Loft Cinema celebrates Tucson’s birthday month with a special 35mm screening of the acclaimed 1993 western Tombstone, starring Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday, lmed in Tucson and other locations throughout Southern Arizona! See Old Tucson Studios, Mescal, Patagonia, Texas Canyon and other local landmarks on the big screen as history comes alive in this action-packed homage to “e Town Too Tough to Die.”

Grab a slice of our free Tucson Birthday Cake (while supplies last), and enter our Free Prize Rae for a fantastic Tucson Gift Basket that includes blu rays of lms made in Arizona, Tucson-centric books, gift certicates from local retailers and more!

A cult favorite since its modestly successful release in 1993, Tombstone is a highly entertaining western about the legendary battle to deliver justice to a small Arizona town. Kurt Russell turns in a gripping performance as U.S. Marshall Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer goes for broke with a memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holiday. ings begin with Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone, AZ with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst onto the scene to terrorize the town, and Earp realizes he can’t keep his gun belt o any longer, as the action irrevocably hurtles toward the infamous shootout at the OK Corral. Featuring an incredible, all-star supporting cast of tough guys including Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Michael Rooker, Powers Boothe and Charlton Heston, and sporting lush cinematography and a stirring music score, Tombstone is an explosive, slam-bang western that recalls the classics of the genre’s golden age and simultaneously oers a revisionist commentary from a modern perspective. (Dir. by George P. Cosmatos, 1993, USA, 130 mins., Rated R)

TOMBSTONETUCSON BIRTHDAY MONTH SCREENING!

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31 AT 7:30PMREGULAR ADMISSION PRICES

$200 MONTHLY GRAND PRIZE!$1,000 YEARLY GRAND PRIZE!

On the rst Friday of each month at 9:00pm,  Red Meat’s  Max Cannon hosts the biggest, baddest short lm contest in town – just bring us your short lms and we’ll play them on the largest movie screen in Southern Arizona!

In case you’ve never been to a First Friday Shorts show, here are the rules: We’ll play anything you’ve made that’s under 15 minutes long and is brought to us on a DVD, thumb drive or BLU-ray (one lm per person, and DVDs must be playable on a regular DVD player and lms on drives need to be in by 8:00pm). Submissions are only taken on the day of the event, and all entries MUST BE RECEIVED PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACTUAL SHOW (we cannot accept lms after the show has begun, or during intermission). All lms are played in the order they’re received. Every lm is guaranteed to play for 3 minutes, but after that the audience can call for the dreaded “gong” if they’re displeased. If the gong is struck, our intrepid host stops the lm and the next movie begins. But don’t despair … if your lm is gonged, you can re-work it and bring it back to see if the changes you’ve made have pleased the audience. is is a great way for lmmakers to try out new ideas and see how an actual audience responds, so take advantage. You cannot submit the same lm more than once unless it has been re-worked. Remember, the audience decides the winner each and every month, so keep them happy!

PLEASE NOTE: We only take the rst 15 lms that are brought in each month and the spots have been lling up really fast. We start taking submissions as soon as we open the day of the show so get your lms in early!

PLEASE BE ADVISED: Since we don’t pre-screen First Friday Shorts entries, we don’t know what each month’s “lm content” rating will be. Be advised that some material may not be suitable for all audiences.

CO-PRESENTED BY THE ROGUE THEATRE AND THE LOFT CINEMA

“Intense and intimate… an up close and personal encounter with two acting giants.” – Domenic Cavendish, Telegraph

London’s Almeida eatre makes its live screening debut with an explosive new adaptation of Richard III, directed by Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold with Oscar-nominee Ralph Fiennes as Shakespeare’s most notorious villain and Oscar-winner Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Margaret. War-torn England is reeling after years of bitter conict. King Edward is ailing, and as political unrest begins to stir once more, Edward’s brother Richard – vicious in war, despised in peacetime – awaits the opportunity to seize his brother’s crown. rough the malevolent Richard, Shakespeare examines the all-consuming nature of the desire for power amid a society riddled by conict. Olivier-winning director Rupert Goold’s (Macbeth, King Charles III) searing new production hones a microscopic focus on the mythology surrounding a monarch whose machinations are inextricably woven into the fabric of British history. SPECIAL ENGAGEMENTS 6

“If anyone tells you there is only one way – their way – get as far away from them as possible, both physically and philosophically.” – Jim JarmuschThere’s no one in independent film quite like Jim Jarmusch, one of American cinema’s most idiosyncratic filmmakers. Born to Episcopalian parents in Ohio in 1953, the director fell in love with B-movie double features as a child, and fell into counter-culture arthouse movies in his teens. The director studied Journalism at Northwestern before dropping out and studying literature at Columbia, moving to Paris for ten months and then returning and applying to the film school at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he worked under

legendary director Nicholas Ray (Rebel without a Cause), who encouraged the young filmmaker’s unique vision.  Jarmusch is a sort of perennial outsider: at 15 his hair turned grey, which his friend and collaborator  Tom Waits  thinks made him “an immigrant in the teenage world. He’s been an immigrant — a benign, fascinated foreigner — ever since. And all his films are about that.” And it’s not hard to see Waits’ point — from his early ‘80s breakthrough film Stranger Than Paradise  to his more recent star-laden films like  Only Lovers Left Alive, Jarmusch has combined a deadpan comic sensibility, a mastery of restrained technique, and a deep sympathy for society’s misfits (not to mention a connoisseur’s appreciation for the highs and lows of art and pop culture, encompassing everything from Elvis Presley to William Blake) into a highly distinctive style that’s never quite given him huge mainstream success, but that’s made him a beloved, forever cool icon of American independent cinema. This September, The Loft Cinema proudly presents five early classics from the offbeat auteur, Jim Jarmusch.

In Jim Jarmusch’s classic hangdog fable, a pair of deadbeat hipsters and a teenage Hungarian immigrant always manage to make the very least of any situation, elevating hanging-out to one of the fine arts. With its delicate humor and dramatic nonchalance, Jarmusch’s one-of-a-kind minimalist masterpiece forever transformed the landscape of American indie cinema, and it was the director himself who most evocatively described the film’s winning, if incongruous, tone: “a neo-realistic black comedy in the style of an imaginary Eastern European director obsessed with Ozu and The Honeymooners.” (Dir. by Jim Jarmusch, 1984, USA/West Germany, in English/Hungarian with subtitles, 89 mins., Rated R)

Described by Jarmusch as a “neo-Beat noir comedy,” Down by Law is part nightmare and part fairy tale – an endlessly quotable descent into comic chaos that also serves as a peerless study of male friendship and a love letter to the bayous and back alleys of Louisiana, featuring sterling performances and crisp black and white cinematography by Robby Müller. As Benigni’s character astutely observes (in what could be the refrain of Jarmusch’s entire body of work): “It’s a sad and beautiful world.” (Dir. by Jim Jarmusch, 1986, USA, USA/ West Germany, in English/ Italian with subtitles, 107 mins., Rated R)

Aloof teenage Japanese tourists, a frazzled Italian widow, and a disgruntled British immigrant all converge in the city of dreams – which, in the case of Jim Jarumusch’s Mystery Train, happens to be Memphis. Made with the director’s customary precision, wit and eye for oddball detail, this triptych of stories pays playful tribute to the home of Sun Studios, Stax Records, and, of course, the King of Rock-n-Roll, who presides over the film like a spirit. Also starring Steve Buscemi, Joe Strummer and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Mystery Train is a boozy and beautiful pilgrimage to an iconic American ghost town and a paean to the music it gave the world. (Dir. by Jim Jarmusch, 1989, USA, 110 mins., Rated R)

Five cities. Five taxicabs. A multitude of strangers in the night. In Night on Earth, Jim Jarmusch assembled an extraordinary international cast of actors for a hilarious quintet of taxi-based tales of urban displacement and existential angst , spanning time zones, continents and languages. Jarmusch’s lovingly askew view of humanity as seen from the passenger seat makes for one of his most warmest, more charming films. (Dir. by Jim Jarmusch, 1991, France/ UK/ Germany/ USA/ Japan, in English/ French/ Finnish/ Italian/ German with subtitles, 129 mins., Rated R)

Jim Jarmusch’s hypnotic, visionary Western, hailed by Greil Marcus as “the best movie of the end of the 20th century,” is a haunting parable of spiritual rebirth and a radical twist on the traditional myth of the American West. Powered by Neil Young’s eerie, brooding electric guitar score, Robby Müller’s shimmering black and white cinematography and a stellar cast including Robert Mitchum, Crispin Glover, Steve Buscemi and Iggy Pop, Dead Man is a gorgeous revisionist Western, a metaphysical dreamscape and a barbed reflection on the illusions of the American Dream. (Dir. by Jim Jarmusch, 1995, USA/Germany/Japan, in English/Cree with subtitles, 121 mins., Rated R)

Experience all the songs from the new Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album, Skeleton Tree, on the big screen in the feature lm  One More Time With Feeling, directed by Andrew Dominik (e Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), and presented in stunning 3D. e lm will be shown in more than 650 movie theaters worldwide, coinciding with the international release of Skeleton Tree.

Originally a performance based concept,  One More Time With Feeling  evolved into something much more signicant as lmmaker Andrew Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ lmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s intermittent narration and improvised rumination. Filmed in black-and-white and color, the result is stark, fragile and raw.  (Dir. by Andrew Dominik, 2016, UK, 85 mins., Not Rated)

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds’ sixteenth studio album, Skeleton Tree, will be released globally on vinyl, CD and across all digital platforms on 9th September 2016. e album began its journey in late 2014 at Retreat Studios, Brighton, with further sessions at La Frette Studios, France in autumn 2015. e album was mixed at AIR Studios, London in early 2016.

Having anticipated certain death these long-time survivors are now unexpectedly living to old age which brings with it a new set of issues.  Director Daniel F. “Fascinating!  Bosch’s images are surreal, crazy, violent, sinister, astounding.  is lm brings us literally closer to Bosch’s images that we could probably get in almost any museum.” – Owen Gleiberman, Variety

In 2016, the Noordbrabants Museum in the Dutch city of Den Bosch held a special exhibition devoted to the work of Hieronymus Bosch, who died 500 years ago. is late-medieval artist lived his entire life in the city, causing uproar with his fantastical and utterly unique paintings in which hell and the devil always played a prominent role. In preparation for the exhibition, a team of Dutch art historians crisscrosses the globe to unravel the secrets of his art. ey use special infrared cameras to examine the sketches beneath the paint, in the hope of discovering more about the artist’s intentions. ey also attempt to establish which of the paintings can be attributed with certainty to Bosch himself, and which to his pupils or followers. e experts shuttle between Den Bosch, Madrid and Venice, cutting their way through the art world’s tangle of red tape, in a battle against the obstacle of countless egos and conicting interests. Not every museum is prepared to allow access to their precious art works.  (Dir., by Pieter van Huystee, 2015, Netherlands, in Dutch/ English/ Spanish/ Italian with subtitles, 86 mins., Not Rated)

“A visually sumptuous, slow-boil freakout .” – Manolha Dargis, New York Times

A child’s angelic face conceals a budding sociopath in the audacious directorial debut from actor Brady Corbet (Melancholia). A powerhouse international cast including Robert Pattinson (Twilight) and Bérénice Bejo (e Artist) headlines this dark domestic nightmare, loosely inspired by the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre and Margaret MacMillian. Set amidst the turmoil of World War I and its aftermath, the lm follows the young son of an American diplomat living in France as he learns to manipulate the adults around him – a monstrous coming of age that ominously parallels the rising tide of Fascism in Europe. A stylistically fearless tour-de-force, e Childhood of a Leader reaches fever-pitch delirium thanks to ravishing cinematography and a thunderous score by legendary, boundary-pushing musician Scott Walker. (Dir. by Brady Corbet, 2015, France, in French with subtitles, 115 mins., Not Rated)

“An astounding movie… one of those tales of all-American oddness that just keeps owering into weirder, richer territory.” – Ty Burr, Boston Globe

Depicting one man’s journey into a fantastical world of his own making, the acclaimed documentary  Marwencol  is a unique, humorous and inspiring celebration of the power of outsider art.  Outside a small bar in Kingston, NY, Mark Hogancamp was beaten nearly to death by ve men.  After nine days in a coma and 40 days in the hospital, Mark was discharged with little memory of his previous life.   Unable to aord therapy, Mark decided to create his own.   In his backyard, he built Marwencol, a miniature World War II-era town lled with doll versions of his friends, fantasies, and even his attackers. As he documents the town’s dramas with his camera, the dolls become living characters in an epic tale of love, adventure, resurrection and revenge.  And he (or rather his alter ego, Captain Hogancamp) becomes the hero. When his stunningly realistic photos are discovered by the art world, and a prestigious gallery comes calling, his homemade therapy suddenly becomes “art,” and Mark is forced to choose between the safety of his ctional town and the real world beyond it.  (Dir. by Je Malmberg, 2010, USA, 83 mins., Not Rated)

is big-budget, rollercoaster-ride of a sequel from writer/director Stephen Sommers brings e Mummy  back to the big screen for more explosive, Indiana Jones-esque thrills and chills.  It’s 1933, eight years after the events of the original e Mummy  (1999).   Legionnaire Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) has married his Egyptologist girlfriend Evie Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and the couple has settled in London, where they’re raising their young son Alex. Unfortunately, the family’s domestic tranquility is shattered when the 3,000-year-old mummied corpse of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), which has been shipped to the British Museum, is resurrected once again to resume his evil quest for immortality. In the meantime, another ancient threat emerges in the form of the vicious Scorpion King (Dwayne “e Rock” Johnson), a mighty warrior frozen in time with his supernatural army. Now, as the fate of all mankind hangs in the balance, Rick and Evie must embark on a daring, desperate race to save their son – and the world – from unspeakable evil, an adventure which naturally involves a mythical pyramid of gold, marauding bands of pygmy skeletons, and numerous other spectacular, only-in-the-movies hazards.  (Dir. by Stephen Sommers, 2001, USA, 130 mins, Rated PG-13)

“Supremely sensual!   Changed the face of contemporary European cinema.   To put it boldly – a great movie.” – J. Hoberman, Village Voice

e legendary masterpiece of the late Chantal Akerman, Jeanne Dielman  is one of the most debated, inuential, and singular works in the history of cinema. e magnicent Delphine Seyrig (Last Year at Marienbad) gives one of her greatest performances as the woman of the title, an attractive, fortysomething widow who lives in a cramped Brussels apartment with her sullen teenage son. Jeanne’s days are ruled by an unwavering routine of domestic chores (cleaning, cooking, clearing away) and afternoon rendezvous with a string of men she services in her unocial occupation as a part-time prostitute. Chronicling three days in Jeanne’s rigorously ordered life, Akerman focuses on the minutiae of her heroine’s tasks to gradually reveal evidence of the mounting distress behind Seyrig’s impassive face, leading to a climax lled with mortal consequences.   A key feminist text and a cornerstone of modernist cinema, the lm works simultaneously as an exacting character study and one of cinema’s most hypnotic depictions of space and time.  Jeanne Dielman is an astonishing, compelling movie experiment, one that has been analyzed and argued over for decades.  (Dir. by Chantal Akerman, 1975, Belgium/France, in French with subtitles, 201 mins., Not Rated)

Featuring an introduction by Dr. David Soren, University of Arizona Regents Professor of Classics!

Mona Lisa is Missing  is a documentary examining the fascinating mystery behind the theft of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa from the Louvre Museum in 1911 by an unlikely thief: a humble Italian workman named Vincenzo Peruggia, who inexplicably held onto the painting for over two years before he was captured.  Intrigued by this story, lmmaker Joe Medeiros undertook a years-long odyssey to research and answer the many questions surrounding this most unusual of crimes, including how a simple Italian housepainter pulled o one of the greatest (but least-known) art heists in modern history, and if his motivations involved something more than money?  is riveting, often humorous documentary, which combines photographs, animation and interviews with Peruggia’s descendants, portrays a man struggling to nd his way in the world and make his family proud. e lm also puts to rest a number of myths about Peruggia’s unthinkable theft by telling the story through the original police reports and rst-hand accounts found in the French and Italian archives, as well as Peruggia’s own letters and testimony. Named by the Hungton Post as one of the top 21 “must-see”arts and culture documentaries, this engaging true crime tale is as entertaining as it is eye-opening.  (Dir. by Joe Medeiros, USA, 2012, 85 mins., Not Rated) Dr. David Soren  is Regents Professor of Classics with the University of Arizona and Director of the Orvieto Institute in Umbria. He holds a B.A. in Greek & Roman Studies from Dartmouth, and an M.A. in Fine Arts and Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from Harvard University. His specialties include Roman Archaeology and the making of documentaries.    He has done extensive archeological eld work in Cyprus, Portugal, Tunisia and Italy, is widely published, and has received numerous honors and awards for his work.  Documentaries about his work have been featured on a number of networks, including the BBC (“Malaria and the Fall of Rome”), the Learning Channel (“A Roman Plague”), and National Geographic (“Kourion”). “A tremendously smart and enjoyable movie.” – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

A revisiting of the themes of life, cinema, family ties and guilt that drive much of his work, celebrated lmmaker Nanni Moretti’s  (We Have a Pope)  latest comedy/drama  Mia Madre  is a major return to form for the Italian director. Margherita (Margherita Buy) is a director shooting a lm in Italy with the famous and self-important American actor, Barry Huggins (John Turturro, providing madcap comic relief), who is a major headache on set, and whose Italian is clearly nowhere near where it needs to be to meet the demands of his role. Away from the chaotic lm set, Margherita tries to hold her life together, despite her mother’s serious illness and her daughter’s rocky adolescence. With Mia Madre, director Moretti (who also stars in the lm as Margherita’s abrasive brother) has created  a seductive and witty autobiographical blend of comedy and pathos that serves as both a witty look at the fragility of existence, as well as an aectionate (and sometimes not so aectionate) ode to choosing a life in cinema.    (Dir. by Nanni Moretti, 2015, Italy/ France/ Germany, in Italian/ French/ English with subtitles, 106 mins., Rated R)

“A sharp-tongued and smart observational comedy.” – Russ Fisher, Indiewire

Actress Clea DuVall makes an assured directorial debut with e Intervention, a Big Chill-esque relationship comedy featuring a sharp-witted ensemble of thirty-something couples on a beautiful lakefront vacation – a relaxing weekend lled with hidden agendas that soon boil over into comedic chaos. But this bridge-burning approach to life leaves embers in its wake, and when Alice is recognized at an intimate birthday party in New York, a re reignites. One of the greatest scandals ever to envelop the literary world, the unmasking of mysterious “it boy” author JT Leroy by the New York Times in 2006 is the type of stranger than ction story tailor-made for the movies. Armed with scintillating subject matter and a tortured backstory as the drug-addled, gender-non-conrming son of a truck stop prostitute, teen author JT Leroy burst onto the literary scene in the late ‘90s. His gripping prose detailing this sordid childhood captivated critics and cultural luminaries around the world, and the reclusive author found friends and champions among the likes of Winona Ryder, Tom Waits, Courtney Love and Gus Van Sant. Two works of ction, one lm adaptation, and several media appearances later, this much-publicized wunderkind was exposed by a shocking New York Times article as the fabrication of 40-year-old San Francisco former phone sex operator-turned housewife, Laura Albert. And then things really got strange. is riveting new documentary from director Je Feuerzeig (e Devil and Daniel Johnston) takes us down the innitely fascinating rabbit hole of how Albert—like a Cyrano de Bergerac on steroids—breathed not only words, but life, into her avatar for a decade. As she recounts this astonishing odyssey, the unraveling of one of the strangest literary hoaxes in recent memory unearths fascinating issues of authorship, identity and the power of self-expression. “Gross, hilarious and absolutely uncompromising… e Greasy Strangler is a movie that has to be experienced to be believed.” – Justin Gerber, Consequence of Sound

A mind-melting masterpiece of bad taste, this grotesquely hilarious exercise in juvenile depravity and cheesy gore follows the disgusting adventures of a pair of disco tour guides whose town is terrorized by a slimy maniac covered in grease. Middle-aged, comb over-topped Big Brayden (Sky Elobar, Don Verdean) and his sleazy father Big Ronnie (Michael St. Michaels, e Video Dead) make their money guiding gullible tourists around fake disco landmarks of yesteryear (“e Earth, the Wind, and the Fire lived here”). e rest of the time, Brayden and Ronnie consume grease-and oil-soaked meals, the greasier the better, and get locked into absurd loops of vulgar conversation, usually in little more than their birthday suits. Enter the voluptuous disco acionado Janet (Elizabeth De Razzo, Eastbound and Down), who captures Brayden’s heart and loins, only to inspire jealousy from the lecherous Big Ronnie. All the while, Brayden and the denizens of the unnamed city are baed as to the identity of the Greasy Strangler, a slippery and endish murderer covered head-to-toe in fat and oil who crushes skulls and eats eyeballs. An outrageous comedy/horror ick that is equal parts disgusting, oensive and maniacally entertaining, e Greasy Strangler is a true WTF? extravaganza that has been described by horried critics as an unholy combination of John Waters, Tim & Eric and Troma… with extra grease.
