Cooking up a storm in the RAW:almond kitchen! Dinner on the frozen Red River in the dead of winter was our city’s best kept secret until the Toronto Star and New York Times wrote about it. Chef Norman Pastorin from Cornerstone Bar & Restaurant was one of 31 chefs to grace the kitchen during the 2015 edition of RAW: almond river pop-up restaurant at the Forks.

He Ho! Bon Festival! Red River Mutual Trail Over 6kms LongBe part of the “World’s Largest Kitchen Party”

46th Annual Festival du Voyageur starts February 13 to 22, 2015. Over 130 artists will be showcased at Voyageur Park as well as in our 9 other official sites during the 10 days of the Festival!

This year, Festival du Voyageur offers, for the very first time, nightly activities between the four walls of Fort Gibraltar! The Bar Gibraltar presented by Jägermeister will be a new late-night area at the Park. Festival-goers will have the opportunity to dance to the DJ beats, warm up around the bonfires and be amazed by the fire jugglers! The Fort will be open February 14, 15, 20 and 21 from 9:15 p.m. to midnight. This venue is open to all ages.

Voyageur Park is the ideal location in which to celebrate winter! The young ones can enjoy a the winter playground with snow forts, slides, voyageur adventures, hills to climb, instruments, games, horse sleigh rides, a giant igloo and much more! Adults can participate in one of the many free snowshoe workshops, relax at the Liquor Mart Snow Bar, shop for unique items in the Souvenir Tent or take part in the Voyageur Apprentice Workshops and learn more about Manitoba’s history at Fort Gibraltar.

To celebrate Louis Riel Day, on February 16, Festival du Voyageur offers a day full of programming. There will be loads of activities at

Fort Gibraltar, such as traditional trades and crafts demonstrations, fiddling and jigging workshops, and much more. We will also create the largest ‘living’ Métis flag ever! Festival du Voyageur will provide free attire to the public in order to create the flag colors.

Festival du Voyageur offers a free shuttle service in order to lessen traffic around Voyageur Park and to enhance the visitor experience. The shuttle’s trajectory will take it from Centre LaVérendrye (614, Des Meurons street), to Université de Saint-Boniface (entrance on Despins St.), to Voyageur Park. The shuttle will stop every 20 minutes at these designated stops.

Trail is stretching further down the Red River reaching a total length of 6.1 kms.

“The Red River Mutual Trail has never extended this far down the Red River and we’re excited to connect those communities to Winnipeg’s downtown,” says Paul Jordan, Chief Executive Officer, The Forks. “There is still a lot of winter ahead of us and it’s a great way for Winnipeggers to get outside and embrace it.”

The Red River Mutual Trail continues to inspire creativity and capture imaginations with the recent addition of the winning 2015 warming huts as well as river painting by local artist Kal Barteski. Over the next few weeks the trail will play host to many events including Subaru Canada Ironman Outdoor Curling Bonspiel, The Jack Frost Challenge, Festival du Voyageur’s Rendez-vous on Ice, Manitoba Music On Ice and more. “The direction, length and timing of the Red River Mutual Trail change each year,” says Jordan. “This year we have not been able to get onto the Assiniboine River, but extending the portion down Red River has been a great alternative.”

The Red River Mutual Trail crew is still working on adding additional access points, spreading out warming huts and putting up trees. Current access points are located at The Forks, St Boniface Cathedral, Balsam Place, Churchill Drive at the Manitoba Canoe and Kayak Centre, and St. Vital Bridge. All rinks and trails are groomed daily and conditions can always be found at theforks.com/rivertrail or by following @RRMTrail on Twitter.

Skate rentals are open as well and available at Iceland Skate Rentals located adjacent to the skate changing area. Rates are $3 for children and seniors and only $5 for adults. Skate trainers are also available for $2.

Typically, the trail runs along the Assiniboine and Red Rivers

with two large skating rinks in The Forks Historic Port. Every year the trail is different, as Mother Nature continues dictating its distance and location. In addition to the skating trail, there is a walking trail and a groomed cross country ski trail alongside the skating trails. The trail typically opens end of December beginning of January, and closes end of February or beginning of March.

The Ugly heads of racism thrive along ethnic lines?

The recent issue of Maclean’s magazine carried a six-page article which has

revealed the ugly heads of racism in Winnipeg.

The front cover of the magazine would provoke a negative reaction, an outburst of emotions upon reading the bold, call-caps statement by Rosanna Deerchild, an Aboriginal writer and broadcaster, it reads: ‘They

call me a stupid squaw, or tell me to go back to the Rez’. And at the bottom, highlighted by a yellow print, the statement reads: Canada has a bigger race problem than America. And it’s ugliest in Winnipeg!

I opened the page where I could read the article, and my eyes became bigger when the double spread title had smacked my face: WELCOME TO WINNIPEG

where Canada’s racism problem is at its worst!

Holy cow! Winnipeg, my beautiful city, is under attack! A city where more than 50 ethnic groups live and thrive! A city where, the one and only Canadian Museum for Human Rights is built on the sacred ground at the Forks!

The writer, Nancy Macdonald, added a blurb:which caught my attention: “The Manitoba capital is deeply divided along ethnic lines.”

Man, I can’t believe this article. My City of Winnipeg is deeply divided along ethnic lines. Yes, Canada is a multicultual country and the City of Winnipeg is home of many ethnic groups, considered as a Little United Nation! And the city has more aboriginals as compared with other cities.

Emotionally, I planned to write the editor and asked for apology. And I started reading the article, and as I went along, my sensitivity was transformed into accepting the very issue of the article. It is a litany of events focusing on the plights and survival of the people of the First Nation. And that the native citizens encounter and suffer daily indignities, prejudices and strings of violence.

Mayor Brian Bowan was ahead to address the issue by convening a press conference. He called the city’s prominent

indigenous leaders and some civic leaders to meet the problem head-on, to acknowledge that the ugly heads of racism have devastated the people of the First Nation and at the same time, to tackle the division along ethnic lines.In a news report by a local newspaper Mayor Bowman says: “We are here together to face this head-on as one community. To do so we have to shine a light on the problem we have in Winnipeg and the problem we share with communities across the nation.”

But what intrigues me is this precocious line: ‘The Manitoba capital is deeply divided along ethnic lines.’ Why Maclean’s article focuses only the aboriginals. Are other visible minorities not victims of racism? Why the Maclean’s article focuses on the First Nations people? How about the other minorities, are they not also victims of intolerance?

Few days after the Maclean’s article, one Canadian-African voiced his opinion that they are also victims of racism. And when I asked my friend, a black guy, he says: “Oh, yes, there is racism in Winnipeg!”

Even in every ethnic community racism thrives. When we arrived in 1974, racism was the daily dosage of comments: “How come you speak a straight English. It is interesting?” One time, a receptionist banged her door when

the workers were punching their time cards. The sound cracked my eardrum and I confronted her, she said: “They are so noisy, like birds!” How about this: “You’re a boat people? Tell me your harrowing experience.” I said: I am not a Vietnamese, I am a Filipino. Most comments: “Go back to your own country!” or “You’re corrupt because your country is full of corrupt people.” One manager says: “Filipino do not eat salads, they thought it is grass.” “How come you’re good in English?” I said: “I learned it while traveling from Manila to Vancouver.” He counteracted: “Wow, I do not know that the Filipinos are fast learners.” And I answered back with stress:”Correction, we are faster learners on earth.”

Does racism thrive in the Filipino community? You’ll be the judge. “Bakit mo ibinoto iyan, pana pala iyan.” (Why did you vote for him, he is a native?) “I do not want to put the “for Rent” sign, I need only good tenants.” One time, two East Indian students were shopping at the supermarket and there were two Filipino women who were behind them, precociously waiting in a long line. One lady said: “Ang babaho naman ng mga ito.” (They are so smelly.) The lady Indian turned her back and without much ado she said: “Eh mabaho ka rin.”

students at the University of Manitoba were born and raised in Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines.

I could not forget when I was introduced by the president of the company to the different sections in the manufacturing plant. Of course, I had to talk in English and the comments from the Filipino workers would make a good story for my collections of new immigrant’s experiences in Winnipeg: “I Swallowed My Pride and I Got Constipated” (coming soon.) Some terse comments from my kababayans: “Intsik pala ang bago nating manager, naku,hindi magtatagal iyan.” (That Chinese is our new manager? He will not last for sure. Take this: “Ponga pala ang magiging manager, hindi iyan magtatagal, uuwi agad iyan sa China.” (Chinaman is our manager? He won’t stay long, and for sure, he will be back to China.) I just smiled! Monday next, at the cafeteria, I greeted everybody in Filipino. “Naku, nakakahiya naman, Pinoy pala kayo, akala namin ay Intsik.”

That’s the problem of my confused face! I look like Chinese, Korean or Even Taiwanese. And that is the common problem of most Filipinos, misidentified!

I am so engrossed what Bill Gates writes: “Discrimination has a lot of layers that make it tough for minority to get a leg up.” But this quote of Ralph V. Sockman intrigues me: “The test of courage

comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are the majority.” How true is what Maya Angelou says: “Prejudice is a burden that confronts the past, threatens the future and renders the present inaccessible.” But do you believe on this what Harold S. Geneen postulates: “The five essential entrepreneurial skills for success: concentration, D I S C R I M I N A T I O N , organization,innovation and communication.” True or False?

But this is great learning curve: “You do not fight racism with racism, the best way to fight

racism is solidarity.” writes Bobby Seale.

Here what Madonna says: “I’m tough, I’m ambitious, and I know exactly what I want? If that makes me a bitch, okey!”

And I will end with what Helen Keller wants people to know:”The highest result of education is tolerance.”

Let us make this City of Winnipeg, the most beautiful and most friendly City in Canada, if not in North America! As the Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associaitons’(MaCCFA) tagline: ONE VOICE, ONE STRENGTH!

A fun and energizing experience that celebrates winter and food

To be part of RAW:almond was three years in the making for Chef Norm. In RAW:almond’s inaugural year, Norman Pastorin had to pass up the opportunity as he was busy with the Grove Restaurant on Stafford and Grovesnor. During lasy year’s RAW:almond run, Chef Norm was busy yet again with new establishment, Cornerstone Bar & Restaurant located in Osborne Village and unfortunately had to pass for another year. 2015 would be the year Chef Norm and Chef Mandel Hitzer would be teaming up again for a couple nights on the frozen rivers of the Red & Assiniboine.

The entire world now knows about RAW:almond as it was featured recently in the New York Times and the Toronto Star. After two years of evolving as a winter pop-up restaurant, RAW:almond has attracted media attention and culinary prominence with visiting celebrity chefs such as Bob Blumer (Surreal Gourmet, Food Network) and Scott Vivian (Beast Resturant, Toronto) to name a few from this year’s roster.

In previous years, I’ve been fortunate to see firsthand the

crazy that comes with cooking at winter pop-up restaurant. This year’s kitchen was even crazier as all nights featured three different chefs, three different menus and orchestrated chaos in the kitchen.

Chef Norm was cooking alongside Chef Luc Jean (Jean’s, Red River College) and Chef Ed Lam (Yujiro’s). All three chefs were cooking and plating dishes at a dizzying pace all night. Even though I was full from a previous event, my tastebuds yearned to sample each and every dish.

I missed Chef Norm’s first course which was chilled confit salmon with pickled summer vegetables. I tiptoed into the RAW:almond tent as Chef Norm, along with his two sous chefs, Scott Ball and John Stupar finished plating the 2nd course which was an oxtail consume topped with puff pastry. I was salivating all night and then Chef Norm pulled out pork belly with fois gras drizzled sour cherry lavender sauce. He had me at pork belly and my stomach was shouting “feed me!”

The courses kept on coming and the 4th dish on menu was kinilaw featuring Alaskan

Weathervane scallops, with mixed citrus sauce, ginger, chilies and topped off with a tomato granite. Moving along to the 5th dish was a gorgeous bowl of lamb ragout and gnocchi. Main course was a plate of medallions of medium rare shoulder steak served on a bed of cassoulet beans garnished with spears of asparagus and green onions. Dessert was white chocolate semifreddo and chocolate torte caprese.

Chef Norm drew from many experiences to bring his RAW:almond menu together. He brought a summer influence to the meal as he wanted to make his customers feel they were dining al fresco in the summer. The oxtail consume, crispy pork belly and kinilaw dishes were drawn from traditional Filipino cuisine. As a chef trained with French and Italian influences, he brought his entire career together throughout the dishes he served during his two nights in the RAW:almond kitchen.

His experience was energizing and extremely rewarding as it was a unique opportunity to cook,

Late last month, the Philippines suffered a tragic loss. Forty-

four anti-terror police commandos risked their lives to protect their people, fighting for their country. Those fallen heroes died at the hands of a rebel group in Maguindanao, and the death of those 44 servicemen marked the Philippines’ largest single-day combat loss in recent history.

On behalf of Winnipeg and our Filipino community, I must express how deeply sadden we are by this cruel and heartbreaking event. As a former service member of Canada and man of Filipino descent, it pains me to hear about my fellow comrades passing. Near or far, we are brothers bonded by our passion to protect, respect and

Filipinos worldwide pay tribute to 44 fallen PNP-SAF menEven after January 30 which

President Benigno Aquino III decreed as the National Day of Mourning, tributes continued to pour in for the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) policemen killed in a firefight in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last Jan. 25.

The PNP SAF's mission was to serve the warrant of arrest to two suspected terrorists, Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan and Filipino bomb maker Basit Usman, who were confirmed to be hiding in the area.

The day of mourning were marked by policemen who went to the streets to “march for justice,” the

represent the countries we call home.

Their bravery in the face of danger, commitment to protecting their country, and unwavering fighting spirit resonate with us today. In spite of the violent warfare, their selflessness shines a hopeful light on a brighter, peaceful future.

May you all rest in peace, and be fiercely remembered as the heroes you are.

Marwan was believed killed during the raid on Jan. 25 in Mamasapano, Maguindanao by the SAF.

It seemed like everything was going the Winnipeg Jets way. Prior to the All-Star break, the Jets had won five straight games and were hot on the heels of their Central Division rivals in the standings. However, the All-Star break that usually serves as a chance for teams to recharge their batteries for the second half of the season might have killed the Jets momentum. Winnipeg’s pursuit has not stopped but the mini slump they are currently in has them looking closer attention to the teams in their rearview mirror.

Penguin star forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin missed the All-Star game and were forced to miss their first game back due to league policy. Winnipeg took a 3-2 lead over the Pens early in the third period with Evander Kane assisting on all three goals. Lack of discipline by the Jets gave Pittsburgh a pair of powerplays that they would convert on. Pittsburgh would add an empty net goal and give the Jets their first loss in two weeks.

Kris Letang provided the spark for the Penguins assisting on all five goals in the 5-3 win.

Two nights later, the Philiadelphia Flyers welcomed the Jets to the Wells Fargo Centre. It was a fast paced opening period with both teams scoring twice. Mathieu Perreault continued his great play scoring twice for Winnipeg in the opening frame. Philadelphia took the lead for good in the second period when Nick Schultz pounced on a puck during a scramble in front of Hutchinson. The Flyers added two more to beat the Jets 5-2.

Lack of discipline has been an issue for Winnipeg all season long. The Jets lead all teams in the NHL in penalty minutes and the Dallas Stars looked to exploit this. Stars forward Patrick Eaves scored on a powerplay just over five minutes in to give his team a 1-0 lead. Jets captain Andrew Ladd would capitalize beating netminder Kari Lehtonen on sustained pressure to the delight of the fans at the MTS Centre. Winnipeg found themselves in penalty trouble and Shawn Horcoff and Jason Spezza scored with the man advantage and the Stars never looked back dominating the Jets 5-2. Andrew Ladd talked about the Jets penalty troubles after the game.

“I think it’s tough when you’re building momentum,” the captain said. “It’s something we have to get better at walking that line and being more disciplined.”

The Jets headed to Calgary to take on the Flames on a mini two game West coast road trip with only three points separating the two clubs. Blake Wheeler got the Jets off to a great start scoring 1:09 into the game. Calgary scored four unanswered goals including a powerplay goal from Raphael Diaz that held up to be the game winner. Wedding bells for Toni Gonzaga and Paul Soriano this year

Backstreet Boys is coming to Manila

Director Paul Soriano on Sunday admitted that he and TV host- actress Toni Gonzaga are now engaged.

In an interview with the ABS-CBN entertainment show The Buzz, Paul said that he proposed after Toni’s 31st birthday dinner last January 20 in their family home in Rizal. The director and movie producer said the occasion was witnessed by her parents, Carlito and Crisanta and sister Alex.

For her part, Toni clarified that she was not pregnant and did not have a fight with her parents

regarding the matter, part of speculation as to why she was absent from an earlier episode of The Buzz. She added she is still slated to do a movie with Coco Martin this year, which will be her last romantic comedy as a single woman.

Talks of their engagement came up after Toni’s “Home Sweetie Home” co-star Sandy Andolong described the singer-actress as a fiancé in an Instagram post.

Toni and Paul, who are in a relationship for seven years, said they are planning to get married this year.

Backstreet Boys are coming back to Manila for a concert on May 5 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The boyband, composed of Brian Littrell, Nick Carter, AJ McLean, Kevin Richardson, and Howie Dorough, has announced its Philippine tour through its official fans club website. The group will also visit Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taipei as part of their In A World Like This World Tour.

MANILA, Philippines – Government sources confirmed that President Benigno Aquino III has accepted the resignation of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Alan Purisima.

It is said that the President is to announce his decision, through a televised speech this Friday evening.

Early reports regarding the besieged PNP chief’s resignation was denied by both the Palace and Purisima’s camp.

Down Memory Lane with Philippine Jukebox Queens No to the term OPM! Yes to Filipino MusicMany people I know

express their disgust for discrimination and yet they exhibit the attitude in so many ways on a daily basis without even realizing it. Some of them are even hypocritical about it--they would secretly like certain things but deny this or even ridicule it in public. For example, some music listeners enjoy listening to traditional Pop ballads; but just because there are people who dismiss this genre as uncool or “baduy,” they would deny that this music is part of their playlist.

That is what is known as music discrimination, which extends also to discriminating other people. How? Let’s take, for example, Johnny: He loves Rock music, but he also enjoys listening to Pop lovesongs once in a while. But because he thinks that this kind of music is uncool, he denies listening to it; worse, he teases or makes fun of people who openly enjoys the music. Because of that, Johnny is exhibiting not only hypocrisy but also discrimination--he loves Pop ballads and yet denies i t and ridicules others who enjoy it.

Are you like Johnny? If yes, then better begin changing your ways. Life is short. Live it well. Live it honestly, responsibly, and kindly. Don’t be embarrassed by the things that you enjoy, when there’s really nothing wrong about them. Don’t ridicule others for their choices, as long as these are harmless.

As far as I’m concerned, I could enjoy any kind of music. In fact, the first type of music that I’ve heard in my life was traditional Pop ballads. My parents loved them. So, the jukebox that we had in the restaurant that we used to own in the 1970s, in Pasay City, Philippines, had really served me well. It introduced me to various genres of music, and it made me become an eclectic music listener. However, my fondest memories of those c h i l d h o o d d a y s

w e r e

soundtracked by many Filipino Pop songstresses, such as Imelda Papin, Claire de la Fuente, and Eva Eugenio.

To this day, songs by these Filipina singers who began their respective recording careers in the early ‘70s continue to grace my media playlist.

Born in January 1956, in Presentacion, Camarines Sur, Imelda Papin is best known for the songs “Isang Linggong Pag-ibig,” “Bakit? (Kung Liligaya Ka sa Piling ng Iba),” “Taksil.”

Born in December 1958, in Manila, Claire de la Fuente is well known for the songs “Sayang,” “Minsan-Minsan,” and “Nakaw na Pag-ibig.”

Finally, Eva Eugenio is most known for the songs “Tukso,” “Uhaw,” and “Maalaala Mo Kaya.”

Eugenio will be a part of the concert OPM Legends at Club Regent Event

Centre. Performing with her in that evening are fellow Filipino Traditional Pop

singers Rico J. Puno, Hajji Alejandro, and Marco Sison.

There’s an ongoing issue in the Philippine music scene

which involves a debate on what OPM (Original Pilipino Music) should stand for and what music the term should include. From now on, I would no longer be using the term OPM to refer to any musical piece—lyrical or instrumental—written or composed or covered primarily by any person with Filipino descent. The term that I will be using is the more inclusive and more academic Filipino Music.

Whether originally written, a reinterpretation or a recording of a cover song, a song or an instrumental, as long as the chief maker is a Filipino, then that would be a part of Filipino music.
