Zumba Party in the ParkBy Roselyn Advincula

The Filipino Women's Initiative received funding from Healthy Together

Now-Downtown to run a Zumba and Healthy snack program for the community. The project was a great success with 127 participants for the 12 weeks session. This also led to the creation of the group's Facebook page by one of its participants. The initiative aims to provide updates about latest happenings and shares resources.

The group continues to enhance the relationship by organizing a picnic event this summer at Kildonan Park.

Participants and their families as well as friends from the community shared this wonderful bonding opportunity. The group is open to everyone. Please watch out for the upcoming projects of the group.

Special thanks to our amazing volunteers that day

- Abigail Legaspi, Jacqueline Manuel, Maricelle Banay, Maria Luz Ocampo, Sheryll Ann, Rhona Gabriel, Daisy Mendez, Irynne Pili, Alex Mendez and Cynthia Morales. Special thanks to Tim Hortons Cruiser program and Filipino Journal for providing special treats.

The Facebook group is listed under "WINNIPEG ZUMBA GROUP".

Algieri’s style could pose problem for Pacquiao

Freddie Roach is aware that Chris Algieri’s height and range could pose a problem

for Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao in their Nov. 23 face off vResort in Macau.

Roach also noted how the WBO light welterweight champion loves to move around instead of engaging his opponent. He added that Pacquiao doesn't particularly like fighting guys who run so much.

Nonetheless, the multi-titled trainer is confident they can figure out a way to beat the undefeated 5-foot-10 New Yorker. Algieri isn’t really known to go for knockouts. In 20 fights, the American has only stopped eight opponents.

Algieri’s promoter Joe DeGuardia declared that his boxer will use the jab and maintain distance to beat Pacquiao.

Neepawa Lily Festival: days of lily blossoms and a slice of Philippine pride

When the west meets the east, expect the best!

The 18th anniversary celebration of the Neepawa Lily Festival was held last weekend as spectators enjoyed the colorful varieties of lily flowers on display; as fun and music seekers met at the Lily Lounge Tent where Neepawa hospitality was celebrated with great fanfare. The thriving Filipino community in Neepawa engaged their cultural fares opening the weekend with Filipino nights with food, dance and song as staples for the night!

At Saturday’s Gigantic parade down Mountain Ave, both sides of the parade route, spectators lined the streets in the morning to have a better view of the extravaganza offered by the participants; classic cars, farm equipment, city and provincial officials including Neepawa Mayor, Bill Stilwell and PC leader Brian Palliser, the Lily Festival Queen, various organizations and businesses. The Filipino entourage added more colour, more lively music when the members of the Filipino community strutted their ethnic dances and bolted out their voices to the delights of the spectators. The Filipino Journal volunteers also joined the parade with our bright purple tour t-shirts.

“Wow, look that these lovely Filipino people, so much energy and how beautiful their dances

are, and look at those lovely women, and look at those men, with small trappings,” one of the ladies seated at the street corner.

“Oh, that dance is known as Igorot Dance,” one of the Filipinos said.

“They are great people,” one man quipped.

With the two luxury buses of the Filipino Journal with more than one hundred people, mostly new Canadians, everyone was so excited to join the festival, the third time when the Filipino newspaper was involved.

At the Lily Nook, just a few kilometres south of Neepawa, is the place to enjoy the large selections of day lilies and everyone had so much fun for photo and selfies with all the varieties of the lily. So much amazement upon seeing the multicolored lily plants, hundreds of varieties at your fingertips; some bought lily plants and some just wandered among the countless lily blooms. Neepawa is the Lily Capital of the World!

“Ang saya-saya naman ng trip nating ito, sa totoo lang, I won’t forget this opportunity,” one of the new immigrants said. “At the Morden Corn and Apple Festival, siyempre, join din ako doon.”

Games were held and prizes were awarded while heading

to Neepawa and everyone was happy.

Thanks to the Officials of the City of Neepawa, the Filipino Journal sponsors: MTS, McDonald McCafe, Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros Foundation, MYXZ Images (Photography and Event Concepts) Sunnyday Group of Companies: Canton Food Gallery and Green Ninja Eatery and Bakery. Also special thanks to prize donors: Vickar Automotive Group, JS Furniture, UMAC door-to-door and money remittances and Lucky Supermarket. And thanks to our hardworking Filipino Journal volunteers.

After the memorable trip to the Neepawa Lily Festival, the tour was extended to a side-trip to Riding Mountain National Park for a quick visit to see the beauty of Clear Lake and the Wasagaming townsite.

After a full day of exploring Western Manitoba, it was back to Winnipeg with lots of photos, wonderful and unforgettable

from page 8 memories. As one woman on the bus said, “Next year, I will be joining again. With the free t-shirt, lots of games, prizes, and all that fun were well worth the $35 fare! Thanks Filipino Journal and the sponsors!”

INC members celebrate foundation centennial

Around two million members of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) gathered at

the INC-owned Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan to mark the centennial of the founding in the Philippines of the church by Bro. Felix Y. Manalo.

The day-long activity was highlighted by the attendance of INC officials who recalled the church history which showed

how God helped Manalo build the church as a fulfillment of God’s promises.

The celebration also included a fireworks display before midnight Saturday that illuminated Ciudad de Victoria where the Philippine Arena is located.

INC spokesman Edwil Zabala said the 55,000-seat arena was certified as the world’s

biggest mixed-use theater and the INC’s 4,745-member choir declared the world’s largest by an adjudicator from Guinness Records.

No coup plot vs Aquino, says military

Colonel Ramon Zagala, Public Information Chief of the AFP said

in an interview that the military remains partisan-free and professional as he denied reports that discontented members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are plotting a coup d’état against the administration of President Benigno Aquino III.

Zabala added that some retired and inactive members of the military who reportedly expressed feeling of resentment against the government are now mere civilians exercising their freedom of expression and assembly.

AFP Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Pio Gregorio

Catapang likewise warned the Philippine military troops against meddling in the country’s political chaos amid the growing disappointment in the Aquino

government. Aquino’s mother, former President Corazon Aquino survived numerous coup attempts during her administration.

Pope Francis to visit PHL in JanuaryLocal church leaders

recently announced that Pope Francis is set to visit

the Philippines in January 2015.The specific details of the trip were not released except that the pontiff will be surely seeing victims of disasters particularly those affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan).

Manila Archbishop Luis Tagle said the Pope had told him during a recent meeting at the tevangelization and spreading the faith. The head of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines Socrates Villegas said the Pope’s planned visit shows his deep concern for the Filipino

people who have gone through devastating calamities.

In October, 2013 a 7.1-magnitude earthquake destroyed many historic churches and killed more than 200 people in central Philippines. A month later the region was struck by Super Typhoon Yolanda that left about 8,000 dead and millions homeless.

The 77-year-old Pope Francis became leader of the world's Catholics after the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI last year. His visit would be the fourth by a pope to the Philippines, considered as Asia's bastion of the Catholic faith where more than 80 percent of the population are Catholics.

Register to vote when your Philippine Passport is RenewedThe Philippine Consulate General wishes to inform the public that in keeping with the intensified drive to register as many voters as possible for overseas voting in the 2016 presidential elections, all Filipinos who will avail of passport and consular services will now automatically go through overseas voter (OV) registration.

The additional service, which is free, will also extend to the Consulate’s mobile consular outreach missions to other areas under its jurisdiction, namely, the provinces of Winnipeg and Saskatchewan. Other consular services in outreach missions include application for renewal of passports, notarials, fingerprint capturing for NBI, application for “balikbayan” visas, and reports of marriage and birth.

The automatic voter registration will allow Filipinos, including those who have reacquired their Philippine citizenship (dual citizens), living and working in Toronto, Winnipeg and Saskatchewan to vote in the national elections in May 2016. The service also responds to the notable increase in OV registrations, which placed the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto at the second-highest rank of Philippine Foreign Service Posts all over the world in terms of OV registrants.

For the convenience of the voters, the conduct of elections by the Consulate General in Toronto will be by “postal voting”, that is ballots will be mailed to eligible and registered Filipino voters in these areas. During OV registration, please bring the original or photocopy of your valid Philippine passport or Certificate of Identity (for dual citizens).

Foklorama Celebrates 45th Annual FestivalA Winnipeg Tradition since 1970

As Folklorama prepares to launch its 45th annual Festival from August

3 to 16, organizers are proud to note that Folklorama is the largest and longest-running multicultural festival of its kind in the world.

“The International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts gave Folklorama this special designation in 2010 and we are so proud to be the premiere multicultural festival – not just in Canada – but around the world,” says Folklorama Board President Amelia Sheocharan. “It’s an honour we are proud to uphold through our mission of celebrating

diversity and promoting cultural understanding.”

To acknowledge Folklorama’s impact on the Province, the Honourable Ron Lemieux, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Heritage, Sport and Consumer Protection, delivered an official proclamation today, declaring August 3 to August 16 to be Folklorama weeks in Manitoba.

The 2014 Festival will feature 43 pavilions celebrating the incredible cultural diversity that exists in Manitoba. This year, Folklorama is encouraging festival-goers to consider: “How will you Folklorama?”

There are also a variety of VIP Tour options, including: Late Night Tours, Party Tours, Cycle Tours, Accessibility Tours and, new this year, Walking Tours.

To ignite the Folklorama spirit, all are welcome to attend the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Folklorama Kick-Off at The Forks on Saturday, July 26. The free event will feature family fun and entertainment with the MTS Marketplace beginning at 4 pm on the Scotia Bank Stage grounds. A special Folklorama concert starts at 7 pm with the amazing Parade of Ambassadors followed by an evening of cultural entertainment. A presentation from Archangel Fireworks will cap off the evening at 10:45 pm.

Folklorama typically attracts over 400,000 pavilion visits each year. Follow Folklorama on

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. #Folklorama45

Folklorama began in 1970 as a one-time celebration of Manitoba’s centennial but has since grown to be the largest and longest-running multicultural festival of its kind in the world. Developing out of the success of the Festival, the organization offers three year-round programs: Talent, Teachings and Travel. All of the programs bring to life Folklorama’s mission of celebrating diversity and promoting cultural understanding. To find out more, visit www.folklorama.ca.

Ang galing! Angling Wall of FameThe smiles on everyone’s

faces say it all. The rush of adrenalin that

an angler feels after getting a bite, doing battle, and then successfully landing a fish is undeniably addicting. The thrill and anticipation during those handful of seconds when you and the unseen foe are connected by only by a mere strand of taut line are absolutely priceless. And for as long as it has been possible, anglers have been attempting to capture a small piece of this experience for posterity through photography. These proud anglers are no different. If you have any ‘hero shots’ that you want to share with the readers of the Filipino Journal, send them along with your name and a short description of your photo or trip to eric.onthe.

[email protected] Get outdoors and enjoy the summer! If you are going fishing, remember to bring a camera and take some fish pictures.

Fish picture tips-Try to have the sun or other light source behind the camera and facing the angler.-Hold the fish by the lip grip if the fish has no sharp teeth such as any bass or rough fish.-Hold the fish by the gill plate if it has sharp teeth such as walleye or pike. Make sure to avoid having your fingers touch the actual gills and hold the gill plate that is closest to you.-Larger fish need to be supported under the belly or by the tail with your other hand as holding heavy fish vertically

injures them and reduces their chance of survival.-Avoid ‘straight arming’ or holding the fish out close to the camera to appear larger. These pictures are easy to pick out. A relaxed pose in front of your body will suffice for a great picture.-If possible, showing some water in the background behind the angler makes for a better scene but ensure that the angler and fish take up most of the frame.-Big smiles!

Sarah Geronimo is most beautiful star for 2014

The celebrity magazine Yes! has chosen Sarah Geronimo as the country's most

beautiful star for 2014.The singer-actress will also

grace the cover of the magazine’s annual 100 Most Beautiful Stars special issue.

The ABS-CBN talent who celebrated her 26th birthday last July 25, now joins Marian Rivera (2009), John Lloyd Cruz (2011), Anne Curtis (2012), and Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes (2013), who were previously chosen most beautiful stars.

The Yes! 100 Most Beautiful Stars special issue is available on newsstands nationwide.

Lyca to attend classes soonLife will soon change Lyca

Gairanod, the first ever grand champion of “The

Voice Kids.” According to her mom Maria

Nessel, Lyca will now be able to attend school and realize her dream to study. Since she cannot read, Lyca learned the songs she performed on the talent search program just by listening to them.

The 9-year-old girl from Tanza, Cavite who helps her mother scavenge junk to sell and even perform for her neighbors in exchange for cash or food, took home P1 million, a one-year recording contract with MCA Universal, house and lot, a home appliance showcase, a musical

instrument showcase, and P1 million worth of trust fund.

For Lyca’s coach, Sarah Geronimo, Lyca won not just because viewers took pity on her, but because she has the talent which she was able to show during

the final round of the competition. Winning second prize was Darren Espanto, 13, also from Team Sarah. Juan Karlos Labajo (Team Bamboo), 13, and Darlene Vibares (Team Lea Salonga), 10, came in third and fourth, respectively.

Enzo Pineda refuses to comment on Aljur’s issue

Though Enzo Pineda is saddened about the issue involving Kapuso

colleague Aljur Abrenica, the young actor opted to distance himself on the controversy by saying it’s none of his business as his main concern is his own work.

Recall that Aljur filed a Judicial Confirmation of Rescission of Contract complaint against his home studio GMA Network last week.

Enzo advised Aljur not to burn bridges because showbiz is a small industry. He added that Aljur just have to be thankful to what is given to him. As for himself, he said he is staying put with GMA-7 and wish to start and end his career with the network.

Enzo stars in Cinemalaya entry “Sundalong Kanin,” in which he plays a soldier which required him to learn Tagalog lines and to fully understand the character’s objectives.

A Contemporary Bubble of Traditional Pop MusicOn Michael Bublé & His MusicMichael Bublé’s music is another proof that genres never really die; they simply soldier on in a seeming commercial plateau (like Classical, from Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven of the previous centuries to this generation’s Philip Glass, John Williams, Alan Silvestri, and Hans Zimmer), evolve (for instance, Punk Rock to Pop Punk, as in Sex Pistols to blink-182; or Heavy Metal to Thrash Metal, as in Black Sabbath to Slayer), get updated (from classic Rock ‘n’ Roll to standard Rock, like Chuck Berry to Elvis Presley to Bruce Springsteen), or combine with one another (Classical plus Rock equals Progressive Rock, like Gentle Giant and Emerson, Lake & Palmer; or Country and Pop becomes Country Pop, as in Taylor Swift and Keith Urban).

In the case of Bublé, after having listened to the entirety of his eight-album discography, I would say that his music may be regarded as a fine example of contemporary Traditional Pop that has light jazz, swing, and lounge sensibilities—a familiar style that harks to the music of the likes of Edith Piaf (1915–1963), Perry Como (1912–2001), Bing Crosby (1903–1977), Nat King Cole (1919–1965), Frank Sinatra (1915–1998), Tony Bennett (1926–present), Linda Ronstadt (1946–present), Diana Krall (1964–present), and even the band The Mike Flowers Pops that came to mainstream prominence in the late ’90s.

Basically, Traditional Pop is a genre of music that is best defined by smooth and soulful vocal parts and a lush arrangement of primarily strings, horns, double bass, piano, and percussion—what may be described also as a pared-down version of the big-band sound of the 1920s and early ’30s.

Born on September 9, 1975, in Burnaby, British Columbia, Michael Bublé is a contemporary Canadian Traditional Pop singer/songwriter. To date, Bublé has eight full-length studio albums to his credit: BaBaLu (2001), Dream (2002), Michael Bublé (2003), It’s Time (2005), Call Me Irresponsible (2007), Crazy Love (2009), Christmas (2011), and To Be Loved (2013).Concert Review (MTS Centre, Winnipeg, June 26)

The Winnipeg leg of Bublé’s world tour in support of his eighth studio album was certainly well loved. The excitement and the applause of the packed crowd, from the slick crooner’s opening spiel to his final a cappella rendition of Leon Russell’s “A Song for

You,” had emanated strongly within the confines of MTS Centre that Thursday night, June 26. Bublé treated the ever-engaged audience to a lavish 24-song set that was comprised by selections from his albums, which included “Fever” (Little Willie John), my personal favorite “Haven’t Met You Yet” (original), “Try a Little Tenderness” (popularized by Otis Redding’s version), “You Make

Me Feel So Young” (popularized by Frank Sinatra), “Moondance” (Van Morrison), “Feeling Good” (popularized by Ina Simone’s version), “That’s All” (popularized by Nat King Cole ), “Close Your Eyes” (original), “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” (Bee Gees), “Home” (original), “Cry Me a River” (popularized by Barbra Streisand), and “Save the Last Dance for Me” (The Drifters). What set Bublé’s live presentation of his music apart from those of other Traditional Pop–oriented artists was the accompaniment of his 13-person backup band (complete with a horn section), which really gave the whole performance an organic and classy feel—something that is usually missing in many almost karaoke-style Pop concerts. Not content with his backup band, Bublé was then joined by a local eight-piece string section that gave more life to the other songs. The whole concert was indeed a great musical experience, especially for people

who views music not just as a form of entertainment but also as art appreciation.

A well-deserved commendation goes also to Bublé’s opening act, Naturally 7, a New York–based seven-men R&B vocal group who equally wowed the audience and properly warmed them up with their purely a cappella rendition of an eclectic set that included Seal & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze,” Coldplay’s “Fix,” Stevie Wonder’s “Fingertips,” and James Brown’s “I Feel Good.” The group also

joined Bublé near the end of the show with energetic renditions of The Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back,” The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love,” Elvis Presley’s “Burning Love,” and the original “It’s a Beautiful Day.”Final Note

Traditional Pop or R&B may not be favorite music genres of mine, but watching well-produced and well-presented concerts of artists under the genres could still move me and lift my creative spirits high.

Manitoba renames Civic Holiday to honour Terry FoxManitoba Premier Greg

Selinger announced the August Civic holiday

will be renamed "Terry Fox Day" and a bill to be introduced in the fall session will honour the native Manitoban. Terry Fox inspired a

generation of Canadians with his Marathon of Hope in 1981 as a way to raise awareness about cancer and fundraising millions of dollars for cancer research.

In a news release by Premier Selinger, he mentions "Terry

Fox embodied hope, courage, commitment and strength in the face of adversity. Naming the civic holiday after him is a way for all Manitobans to honour this great Canadian for the hero he was."

Today, the Terry Fox Run is held in over 60 countries and has raised over $600 million, making it the world’s largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research.

“Terry Fox did so much in the global fight against cancer. He was

not only an inspiring individual but a true pioneer,” said Premier Selinger. “Now when people are enjoying a holiday with their friends and family, they will remember ‎the amazing man who inspires so many.”

Senator Enverga visits Tacloban CityBy Eric Parungao

Senator Enverga recently visited Tacloban City, in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan had displaced over 4 million people, with Tacloban being one of the hardest hit areas.

Joined by Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines Neil Reeder, Senator Enverga paid a visit to communities in Tacloban, speaking with families who were living in temporary shelters established by Canadian agencies and partners under the Government of Canada’s Typhoon Haiyan Fund. Senator Enverga was also given a status update on the progress made thus far by Canadian agencies and partners

such as Action Contre la Faim, Care Canada, Plan Canada, Save the Children Canada, World Vision and the International Organization for Migration.

Shortly after his visit to Tacloban, the Philippines was hit yet again by another major weather disturbance. Typhoon Rammasun was the seventh storm of the season, and the first to make landfall. The death toll has risen to over 100, with over 500,000 individuals displaced by the storm.

On July 21, Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie announced that the Government of Canada

would be providing $250,000 in humanitarian assistance to benefit those affected by Typhoon Rammasun.

“Canada’s immediate response will help ensure emergency relief is provided as soon as possible to the people and families affected,” Minister Paradis said.

My Ride

2014 Mazda MX-5 GTPerfect for summer fun!

The Mazda MX-5 roadster arrived in Winnipeg just as we started getting all the sunny weather and it is the perfect compliment to driving around Manitoba’s wide open roads. Any given sunny day, the top down rule is a given, even when it’s overcast, the top still should be down.

The Mazda MX-5 GT won’t win any road races but it will get you there in style.

The 2.0L DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine delivers 167hp at 7000rpm and 140 lb.-ft. torque at 5000rpm.

The interior of the MX-5 doesn’t offer a lot of features you’d expect to see in a $40+ roadster.

Plus, all you really need with the top down is music and the GT comes with XM SIRIUS radio and a BOSE audio system.

Key features of the MX-5 is the power retractable hard top, 17" alloy wheels, and in case you were tempted to drive in the winter, heated leather seats.

Driving the MX-5 for a week in Winnipeg was great for short trips to the grocery store and jetting to and from work. Just make sure to pack light as there’s very little trunk space.

The MX-5 comes in a base GX trim starting at $29,450 and the mid-range GS model starts at $36,045. The Mazda MX-5 GT as tested is $40,250.

Explorethe possibilities

All-Stars Align at Shaw ParkBy Derick Ramos

The stars of the American Association took the field at Shaw Park as Winnipeg

played host to the 2014 Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries All Star Game. The two day event showcased the skills and talents of the league’s best stars that kicked off with an exciting skills competition and closed with a game between Team North and Team South.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes were well represented with six players representing Team North. Tyler

Kuhn, Luis Alen, Donnie Webb, Casey Haerther, Chris Kissock, and Filipino-American Ryan Pineda were selected to represent the ‘Fish’. Pineda showed off his lightning speed as he participated in the base running event.

Fans were treated to a thrilling home run derby where Gary SouthShore RailCat utility player, Craig Maddox, stole the show with a 10-4 victory in the finals.

Comical mascots, live music, and an entertaining ball game highlighted the second day of the festivities. The day opened up with a luncheon with Hall of Fame Canadian pitcher Ferguson Jenkins as the keynote speaker. Jenkins took park in the ceremonial first pitch later in the evening to get the All-Star game underway.

Team South showed off their great pitching for nine innings

limiting Team North to just two hits en route to a 7-0 blowout victory. Devin Goodwin of the Laredo Lemurs provided the offensive spark for the South hitting a double and solo homerun that proved to be the game winning run. Goodwin was selected the Most Valuable Player of the game. Goldeyes Donnie Webb was the lone bright spot for Team North providing a double.

Winnipeg may be known as a hockey town but these past two days have shown that baseball fever is alive and well. Chester Pagnan of CKJS 810 AM in the

Blue Bombers are 4-1; Big win against the BC LionsLirim Hajrullahu named special teams player of week

The Blue Bombers knocked off the BC Lions last week with a huge 23-6 win on

the road at BC Place.

5-for-5 for Harjullahu! After nailing five field goals, including one from 51 yards out, punting five times with a 43-yard average, and booming kickoffs all night,

rookie kicker Lirim Hajrullahu has been named the CFL Special Teams Player of the Week.

Hajrullahu, the Blue Bomber placekicker, is also holding down

the punting duties in the absence of injured punter Mike Renaud.

This is the second time this season the Bombers have had a player win this award, with Demond Washington earning the recognition week two against Ottawa.

The Bombers face the Hamilton Tiger Cat this week in Hamilton and back at Investors Group Field to battle the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Lirim Hajrullahu with punting duties.

The Cotswolds, England's prettiest countryside

Having been to London so many times we consider ourselves as English die-

hard tourists never getting tired returning to this one of the world's leading global cities. However, on our most recent trip we opt to stay away from the bustling city of London to spend a relaxing day at the picturesque English countryside called the Cotswolds.

The best way to explore the Cotswolds is by car. From the capital city of London travel west through the M4 and M40 motorways. It takes about an hour and fifty minutes to negotiate the 118.5 kms. driving past Oxford City centre, Witney Market Square and then Burford, one of the Cotswolds' towns aside from Bourton-on-the-Water, Cirencester, Chipping Camden, and Stow-on-the-Wold. Shown in miles the distance from a town to the next is indicated in the road signs. And don't forget: in England you drive on the left hand side of the road!

Lying mainly within the counties of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, England, are limestone hills called the "Cotswolds", designated as an area of Outstanding National Beauty, with its rolling hills, attractive small towns and idyllic villages built of underlying Cotswold stones (a yellow oolitic limestone). Still remaining affluent the area became wealthy and prosperous because of the wool trade during the Middle Ages.

Attractively located on the willow-fringed River Windrush, the small mediveal town of Burford is noted for its long history of hospitality from its community of 1,000 residents.

In 2009 Burford has been voted 6th in the Forbes Magazine's list of "Europe's Most Idyllic Place to Live". Sloping gently down to the river, High Street, its main street, is lined with old houses, ancient cottages, exclusive shops and galleries, antique stores, old pubs and tea/coffee shops all of which seem not to have changed since the old times. One of the galleries that fascinated us is the Burford Woodcraft housed in an old building of Cotswold stones. Specializing in wood the gallery produces high quality pieces illustrating the natural beauty and versatility of the wood be it a simple bookmark or a chest of drawers.

Located also at High Street is the Tolsey Museum quartered in the early Tudor market/court house, a black and white timber building erected on stone pillars. It was once the meeting place for rich wool merchants who also paid their tolls or taxes during the medieval period. The museum houses a wide ranging collection of local artefacts depicting the social and industrial culture of the Oxfordshire town and surrounding area. Exhibits include town maces, seals and charters of the town guilds along with items recalling the trades that flourished here during the bygone days of stone-quarrying, rope making, bell-founding, brewing, leather-working, and clarinet making.

There's also a doll's house which depicts the period of Jane Austen, the famous English romantic novelist.

Also a must-see in Burford is the magnificent St. John the Baptist Church, one of England's thousand best and oldest churches, another sign of bygone wealth based on wool.

A bustling town, Cirencester often referred to as the "Capital of the Cotswolds" was once the most important place in Britain second only to London during the Roman times.

Chipping Camden is a lovely small market town famous for its elegant terraced High Street lined with a succession of ancient houses dating back from the 14th to the 17th century. The Church of St. James is the most impressive in the area. Stow-on-the-Wold, the highest town in the Cotswolds being situated on top of a hill boasts a vast square surrounded by imposing honey-coloured houses.

Possibly the prettiest of the Costwolds' villages with its many low arched stone bridges, Bourton-on-the-Water is the known for its scenic High Street bordered by long wide greens and the River Windrush that runs through them. The arched bridges have led to Bourton-on-the-Water being called the "Venice of the Cotswolds".

A trip to the Cotswolds gives us the surreal feel of a journey back in time - a long long time from the Middle Ages.
