WHO’S YOUR ‘HOOD? Know ‘em, so you can show ‘em!

A ‘HOOD IS A GROUP OR AREA THAT YOU KNOW WELL AND HAVE SOME IMPACT ON. It could be your neighbours, your street, your school, your mob, your club, your suburb, your workplace or your local council area.

You have tremendous circles of inf uence, just by being who you are. We’re here to show you how to use these relationships to take on your community’s climate challenge.

STAY IN THE LOOP. Want to make changes at the school canteen? Then roll up your sleeves and volunteer for a term, f rst. Want the of ce to love your ideas for reducing energy use on Level 12? Then be an engaged participant at staff meetings and strategy days that show others respect before you start walking around switching off monitors willy-nilly. It will always help you understand an organisation, the personalities, the stakeholders and the barriers to change before throwing ideas around. Before you start mixing things up, it’s important to understand what’s in the blender f rst!

SO MUCH ATTITUDE. Climate is a hot topic. So hot in fact, that people can go red in the face arguing about it. More than a few family dinner conversations or sideline soccer chats have gone all weird and awks-y when the big C is raised.

Firstly like any issue, we all need a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Our opinions, like our hairstyles, are sometimes ugly to others, but they are also open to change (remember that ugly fringe you had in the early 90s?).

FEELING A LITTLE SAD THAT YOU DON’T HAVE THE KIND OF EPIC ‘HOOD YOU

CAN CONNECT WITH YET?

WELL FRIENDS, IT’S TIME TO START BUILDING SOME RELATIONSHIPS FIRST.

Everything from our values, political biases, habits and approaches to risk which def ne our attitudes can also evolve over time. So why are we so seemingly divided on an issue, that has so much agreement by the experts in the area?

Are we even that divided?

The Australia Talks National Survey revealed what Australians are most worried about and told us that climate change was the leading worry for 72 per cent of the respondents saying it would affect their lives. In the 12 months following the Australia Talks Survey concern about climate change increased 5 percentage points to 79% (Australia Institute, January 2020).

Most importantly, how do we have rational chats without throwing things at each other? (Looking at you Uncle Steve.)

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT HOW ATTITUDES MIGHT SIT WHEN IT COMES TO THE ISSUE OF CLIMATE CHANGE . . . Thanks to that legendary Aussie Social Researcher and Author of “How to Talk About Climate Change in a Way That Makes a Difference”, Rebecca Huntley we can have a look at the six identif ed types of people and how motivated and concerned they are, starting here with the most concerned and motivated “believers” in climate change (Amelia) to the least bothered, who identify as not believing in climate change at all (Daisy).

Alarmed Amelia: fully aware that the climate is a serious business and by golly, she’s been taking action to address it! She’s got a network of events she attends wearing a “the planet is hotter than my boyfriend” t-shirt. She’s about tolaunch a climate podcast. Some of her friends f ndher pretty intense.

Concerned Carol: open to consider some changes around the house and she’s always wanted to join the Green Team at work, and she’s thinking of switching to 20% green energy before her next electricity bill. She thinks Leonardo Dicaprio is 60% hotter when he talks about the planet. She shares posts on her socials.

Cautious Connor: senses there’s a serious issue afoot but struggling to make sense of what he can do about it. Don’t press him or he’s going to get a bit quiet. Feels worried that something might impact his kids or grandkids, but perhaps it’s an issue someone else should tackle f rst?

Disengaged Donna: generally ambivalent. Not sure who is worthy of trust in any of this. Would prefer she didn’t think about the issue for too long. Can’t we all just get on with talking about something else?

Doubtful Dan: not convinced that this is something worthy of his attention. More likely to continue business as usual, thanks very much. Thinks you look ridiculous going to a Climate Strike.

Dismissive Daisy: convinced climate change is not happening. Likes to write angry Letters to the Editor. May have left a dinner party early once because the host had clearly ‘drunk the climate cool-aid’.

OUR TRUSTED MESSENGERS WE TRUST THE PEOPLE WE KNOW. SIMPLE, HEY? Family and close friends are a great place to discuss how your ‘hood might tackle reducing carbon emissions. Outside these circles, the people we respect in our community who show skills or smarts in their trusted f eld and support steps towards climate friendly actions are called Trusted Messengers.

In your ‘hood these peeps could be: students, scientists, health-care professionals, f rst responders, church leaders, weather reporters, zoo staff, museum curators, academics, farmers, celebrities, business leaders, athletes, authors, team captains, news reporters and comedians.

The potential for engagement from their special messaging is huge, and their appeal is non-threatening and authoritative.

TIP!

Focus on the positives Instead of this: Try this:

FOMO is real and no one wants to feel they are losing out by having to change their behaviour. Focusing on the social, health, and fn ancial benef ts of reducing carbon emissions is a great approach to getting

your community on board!

Instead of this: Try this:

Our club has saved $300 since reducing our energy use and we’ve reduced our

carbon emissions too.

If we don’t change our behaviours the planet is screwed.

We already have solutions to reduce

carbon emissions that our community can use.

THE PLANET IS HOTTER THAN

USE YOUR EFFORT WISELY There are smarter choices you can make about how you go and use your personal energy when talking all things climate.

Our club used to be incredibly wasteful and

didn’t care about the planet, now we do.

Instead of this: Try this:

We are no longer serving beef as it’s bad for the planet.

Ask us how switching to pork sausages is

helping our community climate challenge.

DO: TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE FOR MAXIMUM CLIMATE IMPACT IN YOUR ‘HOOD Your mob, neighbours, street, school, club, workplace or local council

VIEW: CHAPTER 1 Who’s your ‘hood?

FOCUS ON... GO LOCAL FIRST: Fly less, Offset Always Avoid f ying when you can. Make a plan by road or by train or by boat when there are other options. Emissions from airline travel are pretty epic so if your community, school or business has a choice to avoid the air, choose it. If you can’t, always choose to offset your emissions.

Stay on Country Whether it’s excursions, holidays, conferences, trip giveaways for a community raf e or your next inter-organisational meet up, explore your local destination choices f rst. Getting to know your ‘hood is good for the soul, connects you to your roots and it’s emission busting.

PARK IT FOR THE PLANET: Share and share alike Normalise share choices in your ‘hood. Try a walking school bus on your local streets, promote the use of local car share options or provide a bike valet parking at events. Apart from the social ties you will be building, when you join in shared transport options you’re part of normalising it.

Make It Public Promote public transport as a preferred choice in your ‘hood. Make it clear in all your comms that when getting to events and meet-ups in your ‘hood, PT is the bees knees. Maybe you could incentivise leaving the car at home and share the benef ts of getting there en masse. When it comes to travel, the cool kids aren’t just the ones that sit up the back of the bus.

Dial back the Commute Ask if video conferencing can be used. Why can’t your next rugby association AGM or P&C meeting or book club meeting be held online? Gary, you’ll need to unmute to respond mate.

ABOUT GOOD FOR THE HOOD. We’re Jo and Corina.

We like to punch above our weight when tackling planetary problems in a frank and fearless way. We’re a couple of mumsy-types who aren’t afraid to talk trash or climate change over a coffee or two.

When ABC showed us the War On Waste, we entered into waste reduction wonderland… f rst in our personal lives, then in our community. We created the War on Waste Action Toolkit and together with a bunch of new-found best waste mates including (cardboard) Craig, beautiful communities of change popped up all over Australia.

AND NOW WE ARE PUMPED TO ENLIST FOR THE FIGHT FOR PLANET A. WE
