Humbled by God’s mercy, we seek to follow Christ and live the joy of the Gospel through love and service.—Mission Statement

Fifth Sunday of Lent

-Fr. John Williamson

We see them up on the altar every Sun-day, helping the priest to keep the Mass run-ning smoothly. Their ages range from eight to young adult and they wear robes like the priests’ robes. Trained by our Altar Server Co-ordinator, Shawn Carlin, altar service is a great way to appreciate the Mass more and to have a closer encounter with Christ. Shawn wants every young person at CCASTA to have the op-portunity to serve God and others through altar service. The benefits to the priests are obvious but al-tar servers gain personally, too — they learn why we do everything in the Mass. They get fully involved in it and they may get more out of it than many of their pals in the pews. It can also teach some great life-skills. Communica-

on, teamwork, perceiving what needs to be done and doing it, punctuality, and self-confidence are just a few. “My favorite part of being altar server is by altar serving I learn why we do everything at Mass and get involved in the Mass.” -BBen “My favorite part of being an altar serv-er is helping the priest. I am glad to be an altar server because I feel more connected with the Mass.” – Abby

It’s not just the young people that receive the benefits either: “Our oldest son has been serving for almost 4 years now, since 5th grade. He very much gains a sense of service, not only to people of the parish, but also to God. He knows he is serving the Lord by being an integral part of the Mass. In addi on, he knows he is serving the people, especially when he is chosen to serve at a funeral Mass. This feeling of service will be ingrained in him as he grows into a young man, and hopefully con nues to serve his family, his commu-nity, and his faith.” – Bart Bonar If you have a son or daughter who might be interested in being an altar server, talk to them about it! Shawn will be holding a three-session training a er Easter at both Ascension and St. Augus ne. Training is conducted a er the 10:30 Mass at Ascension, or a er the 12:15 Mass at St. Augus ne. For more specific into, email [email protected].

FASTING is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all 18+ years who have not yet cele-brated their 59th birth-day. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken to meet one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Ea ng between meals is not permi ed, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abs -nence, no meat is al-lowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affect-ed, the law does not oblige. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday are days of abs nence.

Note: If a person is unable to observe the

above regula ons due to ill health or other serious reasons, other suitable forms of self-denial are

encouraged.
