“During this lent, let us all ask the Lord: Make our hearts like your own’...a heart which is firm & merciful, attentive

& generous, a heart which is not closed…” ~Pope Francis

The incident of the gospel with the adulteress woman has many lessons for all of us in this

Season of Lent. We are all sinners in greater or lesser degree. We all offend the good God in

many ways. But, thank God, we are not dealing with the Scribes and Pharisees as our judges,

but with a God of Mercy, a God who knows and understands our weaknesses and frailties. No

matter how many and how serious our sins may have been, the mercy and forgiveness of God

is ever there for those who repent. The other lesson for us is that we should try to imitate our

Lord by being more merciful and more compassionate toward others. Too many of us are in-

clined to judge too harshly and heartlessly the neighbor whose sins happen to become public,

while we minimize our own failings because they are secret. Remember our Lord’s words to

the Pharisees: “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone to her”.

Pope Francis says in the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy that: “Mercy is the very foundation of

the Church’s life. All of her pastoral activity should be caught up in the tenderness she makes present to believers;

nothing in her preaching and in her witness to the world can be lacking in mercy.” The Church’s very credibility is

seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love. The Church “has an endless desire to show mercy”.

[8] Perhaps we have long since forgotten how to show and live the way of mercy. The temptation, on the one hand, to

focus exclusively on justice made us forget that this is only the first, albeit necessary and indispensable step. But the

Church needs to go beyond and strive for a higher and more important goal “

At times when we feel the temptation to condemn or criticize someone, remember the words of Christ: “Be merciful

as your heavenly father is merciful” (lk 6:36) or “For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged: and with

what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” (Mt 7:2)

MARCH 13 2016 4

This week’s CRS Rice Bowl country is the island nation of Mada-gascar, where we’re reminded of the important role farmers play in caring for God’s creation. As we prepare our meals throughout the week, let us reflect on where our food comes from - and what role we can play in caring for our environment. Visit crsricebowl.org for more information. Rice Bowls may be turned in to one of the

Ushers or the Parish Office.

Reflecting with Scripture

Isaiah 43:16–21; Philippians 3:4b–14; John 12:1–8

Care for Creation God created every plant, every mountaintop, every animal - eve-

rything. And God said that these things are good. We find God

in these good things he made, and so we must take care of crea-

tion, both for ourselves and for all of our human family.

Isaiah draws our attention to God at work in the natural environ-

ment. “See, I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do

you not perceive it?” Where do we encounter God in creation?

Jesus says, “You always have the poor with you, but you do not

always have me.” Indeed, we now encounter Christ in the cry of the

poor, and the cry of the earth. Do we recognize the suffering Christ

in the poor, in the earth? How do we respond?

This week, CRS Rice Bowl features a woman from Madagascar

whose crops were destroyed in a recent storm. As a farmer, she

needed seeds to get her family back on their feet.

Do we listen to the needs of others, or do we impose our own

assumptions?

5º DOMINGO DE CUARESMA 13 DE MARZO 2016

RENGLONES RECTOS

je bien directo y claro –aunque Dios sabe que Pablo an-

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
