FIFA WORLD CUP HATTRICKS & OWN GOALS IP-301_02A_FWC_goals.doc 4/4

FIFA World Cup Own goals Arguably the most gut-wrenching feeling a footballer could possibly experience, especially in the final round of the World Cup tournament the own goal. But it happens to even the best players from time to time. For the first time ever in 2002 two own goals were scored in one match, courtesy of Jorge Costa (POR) and Jeff Agoos (USA).

Own goals are rare in FIFA World Cup finals and they are often surrounded by confusion about whether the attacker should be awarded the goal or not. To help resolve these kinds of issues, FIFA published guidelines in 1997 classifying an own goal as when a player plays the ball directly into his own net or when he redirects an opponents shot, cross or pass into his own goal. Shots that are on target (i.e. goal-bound) and touch a defender or rebound from the goal frame and bounce off a defender or goalkeeper are not considered as own goals.
