The Wickenburg Chamber is pleased to produce this wonderful event celebrating Wickenburg’s Hispanic Heritage during National Hispanic Heritage Month. For over twenty five years the Fiesta has brought residents and visitors to our community who enjoy celebrating the pioneer Hispanic history of Wickenburg.
Over the years this heritage event has been recognized by the Arizona Festival & Events Association Aztec Awards, the Arizona Centennial Commission, as well as acclaimed awards and fund-ing from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, Arizona Office of Tourism, and the prestigious National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (GRAMMY Festival Outreach Program). All of these accolades bring with it promotion and recognition to Wickenburg and our Chamber organization.
Fiesta de Septiembre activities include featured entertainment, Pioneer Families Photo Exhibit, Kids Zona, arts & crafts mercado, food and drink booths, and many other special activities throughout the day.
In 2011, The Wickenburg Chamber printed a 160 page book titled: “Wickenburg Hispanic Pioneer Families- Nuestras Memorias”, a legacy publication of our photo collection. Copies will be for sale during the Fiesta and from Old Livery Mercantile, Ben’s Saddlery, Desert Caballeros Western Museum stores, and in the chamber office.
We have been very fortunate from the beginning to have cor-porate sponsors who help make it possible each year to bring this event to our community. We Salute: Arizona Public Service, Wickenburg Office and APS Regional, Desert Caballeros Western Museum, The Wickenburg Sun, Town of Wickenburg, PHI Air Evac Services, and The Arizona Office of Tourism.
Again this year we welcome Crescent Crown Distributing – Corona Beer as a major sponsor. And we thank Bashas’Store #55 for their contributions of ice for our Cantina.
“Muchas Gracias” to our “Compadres of Fiesta de Septiembre” which continues to grow each year through gener-ous contributions, and continues to play an important role in the success of this event.

The Songs of the Mariachi are expressions of love, home and heart of the Mexican soul. And so is Fiesta de Septiembre in Wickenburg. This award winning annual event recogniz-ing Wickenburg’s Hispanic Heritage has continued to grow each year in size and cultural entertainment.
The Hospitality felt by local residents and visitors to the event each year is greeted with the same type of expressions. From the morning’s first “Buenos Dias” to the evening’s last serenade, you can see it in everything we do. Take a moment to read about our performers and note when they appear on state during the Fiesta. The Wickenburg Community Center is the event location, and an appropriate place to have a cel-ebration of our Hispanic heritage, for it is in this block which
once housed many of the early Hispanic families who helped pioneer this community.
All of the scheduled activities will take place at the commu-nity center from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., consult the schedule elsewhere in this program for more information. During the day you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the Mercado with arts & crafts, food and beverage and delicious Mexican food. Our volunteers will be roasting Hatch New Mexico green chili’s from 12noon – 4pm. The wonderful aroma of the chilies fills the air.
Indoors, you’ll find seating in the auditorium for the sched-uled performances by mariachi, folklorico groups, and music by one of Arizona’s premier Latin Bands- Barrio Latino.
Bienvenidos Amigos!
The Mariachi. Steeped in Mexican history, they are the musi-cal reflection of proud people. And while their roots are lost in time, their tradition lives on and grows stronger still. Share with us the pride that is felt by all Mexican – Americans in celebra-tion of their heritage, dignity and harmony. We applaud the Mariachi as the essence of all three. Que Viva El Mariachi!
Returning for their 9th year are Salvador Amador-guitarron, Sergio Mendoza-vihuela, Shawn Sotelo-violin, who make up the troupe called Mariachi Alegre. 2005 was the first time for the group to appear at the Fiesta, and much applause came their way. They will open the Fiesta this year on stage at 11:05 a.m. – 12:10 p.m.
Appearing for over 25 years on our stage is Mariachi Corazon de Phoenix, consisting of twelve musicians, playing both traditional instruments (violin, guitarra de golpe, trum-pet, guitarron, vihuela and arpa) and flutes. Most members of Mariachi Corazon de Phoenix have been together as part of other mariachis in the Southwest. Founded in 1992, the core members have been playing for a total of more than 100 years. Their performance is scheduled from 4:25 p.m. – 5:45 p.m., including interaction with the audience.
FIESTA ENTERTAINMENT – We applaud the Mariachi
It is the State of Jalisco with its beautiful capital of Guadalajara, where many mariachi musicians hone their musical talents before heading east to Mexico City, or north to border cities of Mexicali or Tijuana. If music is the universal language, then mariachi is its Latin accent.

The colorful dance troupe is under the direction of David Carrillo, and returns to Wickenburg for their 27th time!
Ballet Folklorico de Santa Maria is an award winning youth dance troupe from South Phoenix, celebrating their 33rd anni-versary this year. The group performs traditional Mexican dances in colorful dress representing various states in Mexico. The dancers range in age from 7 to 19 years, and will delight the audience with their footwork and swirling color.
They will perform at 12:15 p.m. -1:40 p.m. For more information about contacting the troupe for entertainment, call (623) 332-4885.

The Desert Caballeros Western Museum will again display the exhibit from our collection of Hispanic Heritage Project Photographs gathered throughout the years by the Wickenburg Chamber. Original photographs are copied for the collection and then returned to the families. The exhibit features over 600 photographs, representing families such as: Macias, Garcia, Grijalva, Ocampo, Orosco, Villa, Saavedra, Campbell, Verdugo, Quesada, Ortega, Cordova, Rubio, Ramirez, Madril, Molina, Contreras, Rodriquez, Esquerra, Castro, Olea, Gonzales, Meza, Enriquez, Moralez, and many others.
Some of the exhibit photographs are courtesy of the Teodoro Ocampo and Mariana Rodriquez Ocampo Arizona Collection from ASU. Others have been reprinted for display from private collections made to the Chamber which then are copied and donated directly to the collection and housed at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum.

Making Memories – Latino ConnectionEach year, we look for additional family history, in stories
and photographs to include in the Fiesta de Septiembre exhibit and to keep in the collection housed at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum.
You may send us materials throughout the year, and we will copy the original documents and photographs and then return them to you.
Our next addition to the exhibit is to compile family tree his-tory, including the materials in a notebook for review during the Fiesta as well as constructing a tree with branches that visually “tell the Latino Connection” of our town.
The notebooks at this year’s Fiesta have been compiled by local families that share “cousins/primo-prima” with others. Take time to review the books, make a copy for your records, and be sure to send us your documents for filing in the history book of future Fiestas.
For information, call Julia Macias Brooks at (928) 684-5479 or email her at [email protected]. Materials may be sent to: Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce, Fiesta de Septiembre, 216 N. Frontier St., Wickenburg, AZ 85390.

5Fiesta de Septiembre has a special program designed spe-
cifically for the young ones: “Es una fiesta por los ninos” – a party for the children.
Children of all ages are invited to join in a host of fun-filled activities. Experience the Hispanic fiesta tradition at its best -- with games, stories and crafts.
The roots of these activities can be traced as far back as Colonial New Spain. These traditions and more were brought north into the present-day American Southwest by Hispanic pioneers, including those who settled in and around Wickenburg. This program is sponsored by the Desert Caballeros Western Museum and held in the ban-quet room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

One of the most romantic and beautiful Mexican tradi-tions is the Mananitas (morn-ing songs) together with the serenata (evening song) they complement and surround the sleeping hours of a loved woman.
The Mananitas are so named because of their being sung at daybreak as an expression of the love, respect, and admiration that men have for their Mexican sweethearts, wives or moth-ers. The husband, suitor or son presents his concerts from a nearby balcony. He sings the songs he knows to

be the favorites of the honored lady. Generally, he is accom-panied by a group of friends and musicians to add melodies and harmonies to the occa-
sion. The term Mananitas is also given to the music played between 7 am – 9 am in the public gardens, particularly where a fair is taking place.
A specifically noted example is the Mananitas celebrated in the gardens of San Marcos in Agua Calientes during their annual Fiesta.
(same graphic)
For the 6th year we offer a guacamole contest where contestants make their best recipe and compete for the Best Guacamole Plaque. The public tasting part is from 11:25am -12:15am. Judges will determine who wins the trophy.

One of the most popu-lar events at Wickenburg’s Fiesta Septiembre is the Salsa Contest, and this year’s 23rd annual contest will bring out some of the best contestants around. The contestants will make their salsa on site, and it will be judged in categories that include Best Presentation, Most Unique, Hottest, and Best Over-All.
The Best Salsa Over-All will receive a cash prize of $50.00. Contestants will also have a public salsa tasting from 1:00 p.m. – 2:25 p.m., with voting for the People’s Choice Award. The Salsa Contest is under the direc-tion of Jacque Enloe Miller.
SALSA CONTEST
-- MUY CALIENTE!!
VIVA LA MARGARITA!! named…….Margarita.
This year’s 15th Annual “Viva Margarita Contest” has attracted contestants who will compete in two categories: Traditional Margarita on the rocks or blended, and the Exotic Margarita. Public tasting will determine the People’s Choice Award again this year. Tequila the genu-ine article is made only in Mexico is distilled from the fermented juice of the steamed hearts of blue aga-
ves – a distant relative of the lily. Reposado or “rested” tequilas have spent a mini-mum of two months to one year in oak barrels, while anejo tequilas have been aged in oak barrels for a year or more.
The contest will take place on the north patio from 2:45 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. The public must be of age to go through the line One Time, with a wrist band displayed. ID’s will be checked.
Frozen or on the rocks, with or without salt, and in more colors than a veri-table desert sunset, ice-cold margaritas reign supreme. The origin of this famed cocktail serves as the sub-ject of much debate, with folks from Mexico, Texas, and California all claiming its invention. Most agree that the original cool quaff came onto the scene some-time in the 1930s, and many versions of the legend fea-ture a beautiful woman
