FIELD TRIP GUIDE FALL 2017

Save the Dates! Join us for an open house to learn more about

field trips at the Science Museum of Virginia.

We’ve scheduled two events: one as you think

about your fall field trips and one as you think

about the spring.

We know life is busy, so both are scheduled for a

Saturday morning. Bring your family, grab a quick

breakfast and enjoy the Museum on us!

Saturday, September 16, 20179:30 am – noon

Saturday, February 17, 2018

9:30 am – noon

RSVP at 804.864.1400 or [email protected].

Take Your Field Trip to the Next Level at the Science Museum of Virginia!

Everybody loves a field trip. The trick is to design a field trip that is fun, engaging and

educational. One that will leave a lasting impression on students and will spark curiosity

back in the classroom and at home.

The Science Museum of Virginia has been an educational staple for 40 years. But in the last

few years, the Museum has transformed itself into a next-level experience. There’s more to see

and do here than ever before. Which means your Museum field trip will have your students

recapping on the ride back to school and rattling on at the dinner table that night.

The Museum offers two permanent exhibits – Speed and Boost! – various lab spaces –

Art Lab, Animal Lab, EcoLab, Challenge Lab, etc. – and customizable Live Science Programs.

Our 76-foot Dome Theater is a great place to watch a Giant Screen Movie or see a Cosmic

Expedition. And if your students like performances, we have both a live theater company and

rat basketball players.

The cherry on the sundae? We bring in traveling exhibitions throughout the year to help answer

even more questions about our amazing world.

This guide provides recommended activities by grade level, but don’t let us stifle your creativity.

A Group Adventures Associate can help you build a custom adventure tailored to your unique

students. All you have to do is ask!

So peruse this guide, mull it over and give us a holler when you’re ready to schedule your next

great field trip.

Hands-on Labs

Renewable Resources What are renewable and non-renewable resources? Students will investigate the pros and cons of each as they design and construct their own eco-friendly creation.

Preparing for a Hotter and Wetter Virginia Extreme heat and rain events are already becoming more common here in Virginia. How can we leverage design, engineering and natural landscapes to make our houses more resilient to these changes? Students will learn actionable steps they can take at home to become more resilient today.

Our 4.5 billion-year-old home is seeing some wear and tear, and some factors are causing Earth to change faster than others. But what “home repairs” can we make to help improve things?

The Museum is digging into this question and has created special, climate-focused programming to help students understand the science behind our changing climate.

We’ve created labs, demonstrations and even our first original Dome feature.

You’ll see these programs peppered in throughout our grade-level-specific field trips. But we’d be happy to create an all-climate field trip with you. Just say the word!

Planet Earth is changing.

Cosmic Climate Cookbook

Energy, an atmosphere and liquid water are critical ingredients for supporting life on a planet. This original Dome feature explores the cosmic recipe for planetary habitability, what life here on Earth can tell us about our Universe and how our planet is changing from the cosmic perspective.

Science on a Sphere® Demonstrations

Weather vs. Climate What is the difference between weather and climate? See how heat is distributed around the planet, and learn about hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones.

Climate Resiliency What can we do as individuals and communities to be resilient as the climate continues to change? A gallery educator will guide your students in a data-driven, deep dive into the science of climate change and community resiliency.

COMING SOON! Our traveling exhibitions will inspire your students to explore new worlds.

Here’s a sneak peek at what is coming in 2018.

May 4 – September 5, 2018 This new exhibition by Body Worlds creator, anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens, will give students the unique opportunity to explore the intricate biology and physiology of some of the world’s most spectacular creatures, using the amazing science of Plastination. From goats to giraffes and octopuses to ostriches, students will be better able to understand the inner workings of animals and compare them to human anatomy, resulting in a new understanding of the amazing beauty of both animals and humans.

February 16 – August 19, 2018 Where did you go today? And how did you get there? We have developed so many modes of transportation that travel is possible like never before. Going Places is an interactive exhibit that explores the technology behind travel. Climb aboard a flight simulator to pilot a plane, ride on a hovercraft, pack a cargo ship without capsizing it, try sailing a land yacht across heavy winds, and more as you explore the incredible technology that makes the farthest reaches of our planet accessible. It’ll be a wild ride!
