  • P H A R I S E E S The Pharisees were the largest and powerful group. They were not only a religious group, but a political party as well in Palestine. Pharisees is an Aramaic word, for paras meaning separate Pharisees were predominantly laymen who isolated themselves from the Gentiles. Purity of religion was the goal of the Pharisees. They observed the law of Moses.

  • S A D D U C E E S Sadducees were clerics Sadducees come from the Hebrew word tsaddigim, meaning the righteous ones. They were of the priestly class, they only accept the teachings contained in the written scroll. The Sadducees rejected the Pharisees belief of the immortality of the soul, the resurrection of the dead and the life after.

  • E S S E N E S The Essenes were the esoteric group of the Jewish mystics. They got their names from the Aramaic asayya, meaning healer The Essenes devoted themselves to study and prayer. They are the precursor to Christian monasticism. They gathered away from crowded places and sought solace near the Dead Sea.

  • THE ZEALOT PARTY The Zealot Party or simply the Zealots were the activists, the revolutionary minded group. Simon was called the Zealot because he belonged to the group before he was chosen as an Apostle.
