WHAT IS MARINE TEXTILES ?

Marine the word refers to oceans and seas and hence the name marine textiles refers to the textiles used in various applications in seas and oceans. Marine textiles are basically a branch of technical textiles where the purpose for its manufacture is the primary criterion, not it’s aesthetic values. Marine textiles plays an important role in every vessel ranging from protection to upholstery. Marine textiles are classified based on it uses. Composites are being increasingly used for various navigational aids.

FIBRES USED IN THE APPLICATIONS OF MARINE TEXTILES

• Nylon - light weight, lower water absorption.

• Aramid - high strength with light weight.

• Polyethelene – ultra-high modulus.

• Carbon fibres – high tensile modulus, high thermal conductivity.

• Fiber composites of glass reinforced plastic.

WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT FIBRE PROPERTIES ?

Water repellent

Water proof

Flame retardant

Abrassion resistant

Fastness should be high.

Tear strength should be high.

VARIOUS APPLICATION OF TEXTILE FIBRE IN SEAS AND OCEANS

1. Fishing nets - Fishing nets are meshes usually formed by knotting a relatively trimmed thread. Modern nets are made from artificial polyamides like nylon.

2. Boat covers – All-over boat and equipment covers need to reliably withstand the strenous conditions. These are lightweight construction and high tech coating developments.

3. Enclosures – Providing protection from wind and rain. These textiles must resist inclement weather. Perform reliably under the toughest conditions for many years.

4. Marine windows – Absolute clarity combined with flexibility. Resistance to cracking and scratching. Requires marine grade PVC of the highest quality.

5. Oil spills - A smart sponge used to absorb and trap oil into it structure and do not let it out. It is a blend of petroleum derived polymers.

6. Marine upholsetry – Resists salt water and ultraviolet radiation. Extensive array of colours and finishes are available. Provides unparalleled flexibility in creating reliable aesthetically appealing marine furnishings.

7. Immersion suit - It is a double lined fire retardant material. Retro-reflective tape on head, chest & arms . Five fingered gloves. Glued and blind stitched seams for total water-proof protection.

8. Buoyancy suit - Suits protect against drowning & hypothermia. One piece suit in wind proof ,water repellent outer fabric with built - in buoyancy. Built – in buoyancy & good ventilation result in comfortable & light weight.

CONCLUSION

Marine textiles materials are used for interior trim and for ensuring comfort. As in other forms of transport, comfort, design and appearance are important in providing passengers with relaxing atmospheres. Such that the textile materials have used for various utilities. In this assignment various fibres, their important properties and other important aspects like their application in marine ecosystems (seas, oceans etc) are being stated.
