“Sunrise, sunburn, sunset, repeat.” Yes, it’s the hook of Luke Bryan’s current single, but it’s also a way of life for many of country’s acts during the key summer touring months. Fairs, festivals, stadiums and amphitheaters require artists and musicians to play outdoors during a season of potential brutality. Temperatures in Texas and Southern California, for example, hit triple digits the week of July 16, while intense heat sent hundreds of fans to the emergency tent during June’s CMA Music Festival in Nashville. “I sweat my ass off,” says Jon Pardi, recalling his 6:20 p.m. start time on June 16 at Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark, where temps reached the 90s and humidity topped 85 percent. “I sweat, but I don’t care. If you’re not sweating right now, you’re weird, ’cause it’s hot.” Few things will remove the glamor from an artist’s career more. A typical show might produce beads of perspiration across the forehead or armpit stains on the once-clean T-shirt during the early minutes of an outdoor summer show. But let a set go on for 45 or 90 minutes, and the results won’t be a whole lot different than a trip to the sauna. “I’m going to look like I just took a shower,” says Brett Eldredge of those concerts. “There’s just no escaping it.” Country artists are almost required to embrace those conditions. Summer has become a significant theme in the genre in the last decade, thanks to such beachy and/or seasonal titles as Zac Brown Band’s “Toes,” Jake Owen’s “Beachin’,” Jason Aldean’s “A Little More Summertime” and Little Big Town’s “Summer Fever.” The genre is increasingly synonymous with the hottest time of the year, with all of the positive and negative consequences that association brings. “Heat is good for the throat,” notes Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild. “That moisture and the humidity is good, but not so great on the hair and the body.” Artists sometimes have to learn that the hard way. Florida Georgia Line lead vocalist Tyler Hubbard required medical attention the first time the duo played the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio, Calif., on April 28, 2013. “I was hydrated, just with the wrong fluid,” he says. “We were having a good time early in the afternoon, and it was probably 100 degrees. I just got a little worked up onstage, and by the time I got off, I was just super lightheaded and had to sit down. I knew I was on the verge of passing out.”

It’s particularly brutal in the Southern regions of the United States, where threatening temperatures can combine with high humidity and stagnant air to create a cauldron of discomfort. At times, it can feel as if you inhale air in chunks rather than molecules. Those conditions create additional problems for entertainers, who may try harder to work up a lethargic, heat-stricken crowd even as the weather is causing them problems.

“When I get really hot, it gets hard for me to control my breathing, especially when you’re holding notes,” says Warner Music Nashville artist Cody Johnson, who has sweated so much since January that he has gone through three straw hats.

Johnson, who grew up amid swampy Southeast Texas summers, has several techniques to combat dehydration. One seems counterintuitive: Instead of resting the entire day, he does two hours of hard-core cross-fit training in the morning with the understanding that it helps the body adjust to extreme temperatures. He also finds a sports medicine clinic every two or three weeks when he’s on the road to get an intravenous booster with supplements of B6 and B12 vitamins.

“Because I move so much, it’s necessary,” he says. “Dehydration really kills my vocal cords. I’ve learned over the years to pay attention to it, to make sure we have hydration powder if we don’t have access to an IV, just to keep your body supplemented for what you’re putting out.”

Water-soaked towels provide an additional onstage supplement, notes Hubbard. And Pardi tends to dress in sleeveless shirts during the summer for a little extra aeration.

But Charlie Daniels may have the best system to beat the heat, courtesy of road manager Jimmy Burton.

“He went and got a stand-alone air conditioner,” says Daniels. “You put water in it, and it sort of cools the room. But instead of putting water in it, we put ice in it, and we surround it with fans so it blows the cold air around, and the fans are [pointed] in my direction. It still gets hot, I still sweat and everything, but it makes it very bearable.”

Artists are also able to reduce exposure to the heat, assuming they choose to take advantage of amenities. Most venues are air-conditioned, and the generators on buses keep their vehicles at ideal temperatures.

“It’s a refrigerator on wheels,” deadpans David Lee Murphy. That helps them keep their cool, but so does a little reality check. The artists

are, after all, getting paid to be there. The consumers shell out big bucks to be in the seats and — particularly on a multi-artist bill — could be miserable for four to eight hours.

“It sucks,” says Pardi of the summer heat. “But I always try to remember one simple thing: There’s fans out there, and all they want to do is have a good time, so they’re sweating it out with you. No excuses.”

Page 4: FGL, Bebe Tie ‘No Excuses’: Artists Take The Heat Sam ... · Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line ’s “Meant to Be” (Warner Bros./Big Machine Label Group) logs a record-tying

Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line’s “Meant to Be” (Warner Bros./Big Machine Label Group) logs a record-tying 34th week atop Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart (dated July 28). This encompasses its entire run on the ranking, dating to its debut at the summit on Dec. 16, 2017.

With its latest frame ruling the list, which blends streaming, airplay and sales data, the song ties Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road,” which led for 34 weeks in 2017, for the most time at No. 1 on the chart, which began as an all-encompassing genre songs survey in 1958.

Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard wrote “Meant to Be” with Rexha, Josh Miller and David Garcia. Hubbard tells Billboard that “Meant” felt unique almost immediately after the writing session for the track. “It’s safe to say that we all felt like we had something special when we left the studio that night,” he says. “But it was more than just special. There’s no doubt that this song is anointed by the best writer there is, the Lord. With every unexpected surprise in the story of ‘Meant to Be,’ God was showing himself to be stronger than any tradition or genre. I’m so thankful to be a part of this song and humbled more with each week that it remains at the top of the Billboard chart.”

Says Rexha, “ ‘Meant to Be’ was truly unexpected, and I’m starting to find out that the best things in life are. I’d never think a New York City girl like me who grew up writing pop music would stumble into the country world. I have my Florida Georgia Line collaborators and brothers to thank for that. They’ve truly opened my world and taught me to believe.”

“Meant” crowns Country Streaming Songs for a 30th week (15.2 million U.S. streams, according to Nielsen Music) and ranks at No. 6 on Country Digital Song Sales (12,000 sold), which it led for 22 frames. The song also topped the Country Airplay chart dated April 28. Because it was promoted to country and pop radio, it led Adult Pop Songs for two weeks and the all-genre Radio Songs chart for five frames.

Meanwhile, FGL (which is rounded out by Brian Kelley) extends its record for

the most total weeks at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs as the duo’s 90 cumulative frames on top outpace runner-up George Strait’s 84. FGL boasts six leaders on the list, with two others having logged reigns of double-digit weeks: Debut smash “Cruise” ruled for 24 weeks in 2012 and 2013, and “H.O.L.Y.” dominated

for 18 weeks in 2016.“We are absolutely blown away and extremely

humbled to even be on the same chart as George Strait and some of our other heroes and country legends, so it’s wild to see our songs total 90 weeks at No. 1,” marvels Kelley. “It’s really hard to wrap our brains around that, but it’s also super inspiring to get back in the studio and create more music for our fans.”

In addition, FGL’s latest promoted single, “Simple,” hits a new high on Hot Country Songs, rising 5-4.

‘CHANGES’ IN THE TOP 10 Thomas Rhett banks his 11th top 10 on Hot Country Songs as “Life Changes” (Valory), the title track from his 2017 album, rises 12-10. It increases by 10 percent to 27.2 million audience impressions in the week ending July 22 and lifts 10-8 on Country Airplay.

Plus, Chris Lane’s “Take Back Home Girl” (featuring Tori Kelly) (Big Loud) pushes 12-10 on Country Airplay, up 6 percent to 25.6 million impressions. Lane lands his third

Country Airplay top 10, while Kelly collects her first in her first visit to the chart.

CHESNEY GETS TO RULE AGAIN Kenny Chesney’s “Get Along” (Blue Chair/Warner Bros./WEA) paces Country Airplay for a second week (45.4 million, down 2 percent). His 30th No. 1, the most of all artists, is his 20th multiweek leader.

“Get Along” previews his album Songs for the Saints, due July 27. An additional song from the set, “Better Boat” (featuring Mindy Smith) was released July 13. It debuts at No. 22 on Country Digital Song Sales with 5,000 sold in the week ending July 19. The song marks Chesney’s 30th appearance on the chart and the first on any Billboard country ranking for Americana/folk singer-songwriter Smith.

COUNTRY STARS TO THE RESCUEFrom Tacoma, Wash., to Jacksonville, Fla., country artists are doing their own forms of community service, aiding veterans, kids and victims of natural disasters at a handful of benefits.

Chris Stapleton, Jason Aldean, Randy Rogers and Jason Isbell are all part of the outreach on the schedule over the next few months. The new developments include:

• Aldean plotted his third Concert for the Kids on Sept. 6 in his hometown of Macon, Ga., with Lauren Alaina opening. Proceeds from the show aid the Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital. The two previous benefits already brought in $1.2 million for the cause.

• The Randy Rogers Band will host its 10th annual Golf Jam on Sept. 24 at the River Crossing Club in Spring Branch, Texas, in conjunction with Shiner Beers and KAJA San Antonio. The golf/concert package supports the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.

• Isbell and his band, The 400 Unit, join John Berry, keyboard player Gordon Mote and SiriusXM personality Storme Warren as the latest additions to the Alabama & Friends tornado-relief concert on Sept. 26 in Jacksonville. The lineup already included Jamey Johnson, Shenandoah and The Charlie Daniels Band.

MUSIC NOTESDeana Carter, Dustin Lynch, Cam and Morgan Evans are among a bundle of performers slated for the Academy of Country Music’s 12th annual ACM Honors on Aug. 22 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Hosted by Lauren Alaina and Jon Pardi, the event also boasts Old Crow Medicine Show, Ashley McBryde, newcomer Kassi Ashton and songwriters Dallas Davidson (“Kick the Dust Up,” “Tonight Looks Good on You”) and Ben Hayslip (“I Lived It,” “Kinda Don’t Care”). Initial presenters include Jordan Davis, Lindsay Ell, singer-songwriter Lori McKenna and SiriusXM personality Storme Warren.

Willie Nelson has found numerous ways to package traditional pop music in country arrangements, most notably with his 40-year-old landmark Stardust. His latest approach is My Way, a studio album that reimagines 11 songs associated with the late Frank Sinatra. Legacy will issue the collection Sept. 14. Other newly announced releases include Tim Atwood’s Livin’ the Dream, July 27 (self-released); J.D. Shelburne’s Two Lane Town, July 28 (self-released); Dennis Duff’s Songs From Lyon County, Sept. 7 (Gracey Holler Music); Malcolm Holcombe’s Come Hell or High Water, Sept. 14 (Singular Recordings); and Mandy Barnett’s Strange Conversation, Sept. 21 (Thirty Tigers). Fifty years ago, Elvis Presley shot an NBC program that would come to be known as his comeback special. Elvis put the King in black leather and had him performing a mix of big-show numbers and informal pieces for a small Burbank, Calif., audience. It was a major step in what led him to abandon movies and return to the concert trail. Next month, Fathom Events will show Elvis on movie screens on Aug. 16 and Aug. 20, teaming the special with a making-of piece with commentary from numerous participants, including Elvis producer Steve Binder. Go here to find local showings.

Two acts have launched new residencies at Nashville clubs. Halfway to Hazard plays Analog at the Hutton Hotel with special guests on the first Tuesday of every month. The first show, July 10, featured Chris Young, Radio Romance, American Young’s Jon Stone, former Trick Pony bassist Ira Dean and Colt Prather. Big Machine act Delta Rae also plans a 16-week run for every Wednesday at Basement East Sept. 5-Dec. 19.

Page 13: FGL, Bebe Tie ‘No Excuses’: Artists Take The Heat Sam ... · Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line ’s “Meant to Be” (Warner Bros./Big Machine Label Group) logs a record-tying

When independent Koch Records folded in 2005, the move left David Lee Murphy without a label and signaled a lengthy new period in his career.

In the ensuing 13 years, he shifted his priorities from artist to songwriter, still touring small venues on the strength of his signature hits, “Dust on the Bottle” and “Party Crowd,” but making his biggest impact by writing songs for other acts, including Jason Aldean’s “Big Green Tractor,” Kenny Chesney’s “Living in Fast Forward” and Thompson Square’s “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not.”

Murphy had established a fairly no-pressure routine, so when Chesney started pushing him to make another album, he needed some convincing. But when he decided to go for it, he was committed 100 percent.

“There’s no reason to sit around and not do things in your life when you have time to do it,” says Murphy. “There’s so much to see out there, there’s so much to do, and you need to live and just experience as much as you can.”

On the heels of “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” a Chesney collaboration that took Murphy to No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart dated June 23, Murphy embraces that go-for-it attitude with his second Reviver single, “I Won’t Be Sorry.” An anthemic title rooted in classic country/rock, it’s loaded with phrases that celebrate living life to the max: “Gonna go out in a blaze of glory,” “running on empty” and “pushin’ my luck with no regrets,” to name just three.

“They’re mottos to put on the tombstone,” suggests Murphy. “I want to live as hard as I can live and do everything I can possibly do and enjoy every bit of it.”

“I Won’t Be Sorry” was essential to Murphy rejuvenating his recording career. He pitched it to Chesney along with several other songs, and Chesney considered cutting it for a bit before he instead pushed Murphy to make what would become No Zip Code.

“This was probably the song that tipped it over the edge,” says Murphy. “When he heard this, he said, ‘Man, you need to make an album ... You’ve had people cutting your songs, and I’ve been cutting your songs, and you need to just do one yourself.’ ”

Murphy hadn’t planned on that outcome in 2014 when he headed to the Velvet Elvis, the home studio of songwriter Paul Jenkins (“Don’t You Wanna Stay,” “Sunny and 75”), for a writing session on the porch. But his approach to “I Won’t Be Sorry” pretty much stamped it as his own.

“When you’re writing with David Lee, he has such a style to what he does that you kind of are writing a David Lee Murphy-style song that day,” says co-writer Jason Sellers (“I Won’t Let Go,” “Who I Am With You”). “Even if he’s not the one coming up with the words or the melody, just the way he sings, it ends up sounding like that.”

The song started from hard-strummed guitar chords, a relentless rhythmic groove that echoes Tom Petty, The Eagles and John Mellencamp. That led to talk about the urgency of the moment, and the story took shape from there.

“We kicked around the message we wanted before we found a title,” recalls Jenkins. “Living wide open and living for the moment was kind of a feeling we were trying to capture, and I think that led us to that title.”

They knocked out the chorus first, acknowledging the scars and the risks that accompany life at full throttle. Then came the first couple verses, each of them underscoring immediacy from a slightly different viewpoint.

“The first verse is I’m not going to be doing this,” says Murphy, “and the

second verse is I am going to be doing this.”“I Won’t Be Sorry” emerged as an extremely focused song, but it didn’t all

happen in that single sitting. They revisited it through several appointments — possibly a total of four times, says Murphy — to make sure that every word counted.

“That’s typically how we write songs together,” notes Jenkins. “Especially if you’ve got a title you like and everybody’s really onboard with the theme of it, you know, you’ll look back a time or two just to make sure you can’t beat any of it.”

They cut the demo at the Velvet Elvis with Murphy singing lead and Sellers adding background vocals. Several artists showed interest, including Chesney, though Murphy was so convincing that his version would have been tough to beat.

“His personality is through and through on that song,” says Jenkins. “As a person, as a human, he’s that guy.”

Mu r phy c ut “ S or r y” w it h pro ducers Chesney and Buddy Cannon (Willie Nelson, Joe Nichols) on Jan. 5, 2015, at Nashville’s Blackbird Studios, intent on capturing the spirit of the demo. Acoustic guitarist Danny Rader a nd dr u mmer Chad Cromwell contributed much to the master recording’s drive, while Kenny Greenberg and Rob McNelley added classic-rock electric guitar. They still felt the demo was better, and when

Chesney went on tour, the track went untouched for months. They came back to it once the schedule loosened up in the fall.

“We toyed around with using the demo instead of the track we had cut, and we worked on that a little bit,” says Cannon. “But then we changed our mind and went back to the original cut that Kenny and David and I did, which is the final version with a couple of changes.”

That included reworking the bass parts and adding guitarist Tom Bukovac into the mix.

“Kenny and David and I have all been friends for a long time, and it’s fun to get in there when you don’t have any record label telling you what they think you ought to do,” adds Cannon. “Get in there with three brains and three hearts and go for it. I think it shows up in the way the music feels.”

The recording was complete when Reviver signed Murphy to the roster, and after the success of “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” the sound and the storyline made “I Won’t Be Sorry” a logical follow-up.

“It’s very current and very David Lee,” says Reviver president/CEO David Ross.

Cannon shaved off more than a minute of the closing guitar solo for the single version, released to country radio via PlayMPE on July 10 with a July 30 add date.

“That subject matter really resonates with a lot of people,” says Sellers. “Whether we really live our life that way or not, I think everybody wants to live their life that way. I think everybody wants to function in a capacity where you’re going to savor every moment.”

Living in the present moment absolutely resonates with Murphy, which is why “I Won’t Be Sorry” carries so much conviction.

“I think most guys that get out there and ride around and play music have that sentiment,” he says. “I’m doing this, and don’t feel sorry for me because I’m going to go out doing my thing.”

Country Indicator

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 150 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2018, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 109 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

On July 24, 2010, Luke Bryan’s “Rain Is a Good Thing” — which he

co-wrote with Dallas Davidson — rose 2-1 on Hot Country Songs

for its first of two weeks atop the survey. “Rain” gave Bryan his first taste of No. 1 success as an artist, although he had already reached the summit as a writer when he co-authored Billy Currington’s “Good Directions,” which led Hot Country Songs for three weeks in 2007.

“R ain” was the second single from Bryan’s second album, Doin’ My Thing. Follow-up “Someone Else Calling You Baby” became

his second No. 1 in February 2011.The Leesburg, Ga., native, 42,

has 11 Hot Country Songs No. 1s among 25 top 10s. His debut hit,

“All My Friends Say,” reached No. 5 in 2007. Starting with “Country Man” in 2008, he has rattled off 24 straight top 10 proper singles, second only to Carrie Underwood’s 27 for the longest active streak. His current single, “Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset,” ranks at No. 14 on the July 28-dated chart. Meanwhile, in May, Bryan wrapped his first season as a judge on ABC’s American Idol. —JIM ASKER
