Defense, the Government and what they are doing about RAF Finningley' If

Theoutbound flight was scheduled for a 07,OO hrs departure' so uestopped overnlght at Saf f ron i'lalden. (only 2 mi les f roil AudleyEnd, but nothing happening at O5.3O) The flIght was operatedby Fokker lOO G-UKFG (nice - never flown in one before) and weleft Stansted at O7.O5 and uith a f I isht time of 65nlnsarrived at Frankfurt 2O mins early and at an Air Bridge. TheSenior Hostess said that the aircraft was usual ly parked on anoutside stand and the passengers bussed to the terminal.

Now being used to ain travel and actual ly enjoying thef I ight, I don' t worry too much about secur i ty but uhathappened next, did. tle took the first flight of stairs dosn tothe baggage reclaim to f ind that we uere in the area forGerman internal f lights. l.le were then told to exit ln to themain terminal and re-enter the International Bassase Hal I fromthe ground side! ! Anyway, you don't want to know about such trivial ity'uhat about the aircraft? As we landed the initial sight wasthe predominance of.Lufthansa and USAF Hercules as Frankfurtis a USAF base. llost of you wil I be alrare that I don't havemuch interest in military aircraft but I did find thatwatching a C5 Galaxy take off was pretty impressive. As I saidthere were Hercules by the dozen, a few'Lifters'and a coupleof Learjets and Kingairs. (apologies to our mi I itary buffs, Idon't know the mi I i tary names )

The spectator terraces are very simi lar to Amsterdam(over looking the piers, taxiways in front of you, facing intothe sun) with one exc€ption. You had to payl I Being aYorkshir6man, I am 'careful' with money and Dm 12 ( 5) is alittle expensive, the flieht didn't cost much mor€! N€vermind, it did enable you to obsgrve al I the movem€nts and there\.ras a museum (Air Classic) with DC3, Junkers JU52, AntonovANz, Sikorsky S55, DCE nose section and a few other aircraftthat didn't extract any interest from me, Oh, I nearly forgot,there was a 'shuttle'that traneported people around th€Terraces (quite us€ful on Sunday morning when it was raining),

RAF PILOT TRAINING I994

This year has seen Ehe inplementation of three fundanentalchanges in RAF pilot training: the phasing out of the JetProvost, privatisation of elementary flying trainlng andconsolidation of advanced flying tralning rith r."pJn"training.

The long-serving Jet Provost has, of course, been replacedby the Tucano, which non provides basic flying training atl FTS at Linton,3 FTS at Cranvell and pariiaity equipl6 FTS at Finningley and Central Flying School Headquartersat Scampton. (More about all of these in later articles).The privatisation of elenentary flying traininS does notmerely reflect the tendency of the present Government toprivatise everything in si8ht. There is a long hlstory ofthis phase of flying training being conducted Iy the privatesector. All of the elementary training for pre_World War IIshort-service commissioned officers was carried out by thismeans. Similarly, World trtar II Elementary Flying Trai.ningSchools were privately-run, including those overleas.fn 1993, trro strands of elernentary training came together inthe Joint Elementary_Flying Training School, operatEd byHuntinB Aircraft at Topcliffe. The two strands were the EFTSwhich flew chipmunks at Svinderby and the Royal l{avy EFTS whichvas operated by the RAF at Topcliffe, flying Bu11dois. TheJEFTS operates Fireflies, not far from tireii place Jfmanufacture at Kirbymoorside (see April issue).The consolidation of advanced flying training with ueaponstraining is, agaln, a reversion t.o WWII p.acIice, as ServiceFlying Training Schools nere invariably iinked to Bombing andGunnery Schools at which embryo operational pilots practisedair-to-air and air-to-ground firing and low-1eve1 bombing.The three main aircraft currently used in RAF pilot trainingare, therefore, the Firefly, Tucano and Hawk. Clutching a mulEl-languagedEmirates ticket I boarded flight EK 036 at gate 208 (T2) andbeing my first trip with TAS, I had to look twice when IthoughL that I recognised the person sit.ting next to me!. Onmaking conversation I found my travelLing partner was feLlowAir Yorkshire member Dave Whittaker, whom I had seen before atmeetings (LSA) Uut not spoken to!. Anyway our Dubai boundAirbus A310-300, AG-EKI lifred of.f. R24 ar 14.05 and we rrereimmediately given a hot towel to rfreshen upr!. Seated in theIarger Economy section we still saw the hallmarks of scheduledtravel, pillows, footstools etc and your own 4 inch (approx )personal video screen, fitted into the back of the seat infront. This service in conjunction rrith the headphones providedoffers you the choice of 5 rEmirates T.V.t progrimmes oi theshorter section, nith 5 films on the second sector. After checkingin at the nearby hoteL a puzzled courtesy bus driver had us -back at the Airport within 30 mins and most of us made our wayalong tl're spectators terrace. Access to the terrace is from thecheck-in level of Terminal I in the far right corner behind theshop, look for the signs- Zuschauer Terrasie. you pay SFz (f1),are screened by security and t.hen you are free to peer over t,henose-ends of most of the international- traffic, Suit like youonce could at Manchester! !. terrace. You can also get some good photors (105mm+ Iens) ofthe line-ups on R28, which uas the main take-off runway al-lueek-end(take plenty of film). As for spotring it is so busythat it. should suit most. tastes, a good idea is to have aSwissair/Crossair fleet list as it is easier to cross them offrather than keep uriting them all down! - shen you add BalairCTA and Swi-tzerland TEA it totalled up to over 100 regrs in thetlocaLs' alone!. Alas no SAAB 2000s for Crossair untif Autumndue to the re-build of the tailplane!. If you have a car orlike long walks (the shortest is round the other side of theR28 threshold) there are many vantage points around theAirports perimeter, a cafe and car park can be found at the endof R14. The afternoon of the folloring day we had our own Mega-ramp tour shich lasted a fu1l 90 minutes where our driver, anairport policeman and aviaLion photographer t,ook us Lo justabout every area possible within the boundary. The firsi photostop was at t.he end of the Southern off-pier parking area nearthe hangars, nhere the previous evening the Flightline Bae 145=G-OLHB and all whire MD 11- F-GHOI had stood. As for spotring it is so busythat it. should suit most. tastes, a good idea is to have aSwissair/Crossair fleet list as it is easier to cross them offrather than keep uriting them all down! - shen you add BalairCTA and Swi-tzerland TEA it totalled up to over 100 regrs in thetlocaLs' alone!.
