A SUNWICH PORT resident, whowishestoremainanonymous, iscom-plaining about Eskom preachingabout saving electricity, yet it doesn’tpractise what it preaches at its ownpower stations.

The resident says he feels cheatedby Eskom.

“It is unfair for residents to be toldto save power whereas Eskom haspower stations, in particular the onebetweenSouthportandSeaPark, thatare lit up 24 hours a day.

“Eskomalways lectures people onhowtosavepowertoavoid loadshed-ding, but why don’t they save powerby switching off the lights at theirpower stations.”

He says the lights from that partic-ular power station light up the entireMhlangamkhulu beach.

Educationcosts rise>> Parents give education top priority

CANDYCE KRISHNA>>[email protected]

THE theory “what goes up, mustcome down” does not apply to edu-cation costs and this year, parentssay they are “feeling the pinch” asthey purchase their children’s sta-tionery and school uniforms.

While government schools arecharging between R900 to R12 500per annum, private schools start atnothing less thatR2000amonth forpre-primary phase.

Pre-primary, junior primary,seniorprimaryandhighschool feesat private schools cost betweenR2 000 to R5 000 a month.

The Fever interviewed parentswhoagree thatalthough theschool-ing costs have escalated, it is some-thing that will always have to taketop priority.

“MarburgSecondaryhasoffereda discount on fees if paid upfront. The total is onlyR1 400,which I am

grateful for. It’s stationery and uni-forms that really cost a lot,” said theparent.

A mother of a primary schoolpupil said fees at RA Engar wereR950ayear, but stationeryanduni-forms amount to R3 000.

“As the year progresses, I willhave to replenish depleted station-ery. There are also undisclosed ex-pensesthatarisesuchasexcursionsandextracurricularactivities,”saidthe mother of a primary schoolpupil.

The parent of a Port ShepstoneJunior Primary pupil said althoughthe feeswerehigher thanmost gov-ernment schools, the facilities andlevel of education was of superiorstandard.

“The teachers who have taughtmy children over the years do theirjob with such pride. Everything isdone by the book and my childrenlove the school and staff,” said theparent.

WHEN I was in matric the thoughtof cheating during the examsdidn’t even cross my mind.

Firstly, I was too much of a nervouswreck to cheat and I knew that should I getcaught, I would get a serious whippingfrom my mother.

I also knew that I would be subjectedto endless family meetings and counselling.

Not only would it be recorded in the Department of Education’s history books, butmy mother would make sure that it was inmyobituaryandonmytombstonetoo, andI definitely didn’t want that.

A friend of mine cheated in his matrictrial exam.

Even though I don’t promote cheating,I must say the modus operandi was prettyimpressive. During a technical drawing trialexam, my friend and a mate sitting in fromof him, literally switched boards theminute the invigilator turned his back onthem.

They didn’t get caught. On top of that, they both got 80% for the exam.

Wait, I have my own cheating story toshare.

I cheated in a class test in primaryschool. I was in Grade 3 at Richards BayChristian School. I know, the irony.

My best friend Kate and I were sharingnotes in an English test and my auburnhaired English teacher, Mrs Walker, walked

between us while I was whispering answers to Kate. Before she could even sayanything, tears started rolling down mycheeks I knew it was the end — we gotcaught.

I can’t quite remember what the punishment was, but I know that I never repeated the action because the feeling ofthat lump in your throat as you’re usheredto the principal’s office is not a good feeling.

When the matric cheating scandalbroke last week, I thought to myself, is itreally worth it?

I didn’t do well in all of my matric subjects, but I was satisfied with my results because I had put in the hard work. During thelate nights and the weekends at the municipal library, we made sure that we putin extra work because the thought of notseeing your name in the newspaper wasjust depressing.

When the results finally came out andI saw my name in the newspaper, I was

chuffed with myself. I was proud when I received my matric certificate because Iknew that I had worked hard and I deserved the results I received.

When I heard that 39 exam centres inKwaZuluNatal have been implicated in acheating scandal, I thought of all theyoung people’s futures gone to waste.

KZN Department of Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi made it clear thatthe department does not take kindly tocheaters. He told the media that pupilshave been found cheating in the past andthat the sanctions were harsh. They haveincluded a suspension from writing a matric exam for a period of one to five years.

Teachers don’t earn much, so whywould you risk putting bread on the tableto ruin a child’s future?

I ask myself how these children willcope at university, having been acceptedinto the institutions with faux marks.

Mahlambi made an interesting pointwhen he said that children will always be

children. He said pupils are so honest that they

will tell you that “the teacher gave themthe answers or that their parents camehome with the paper”.

I was absolutely gobsmacked aboutthe fact that parents can come home witha matric exam answer script and maketheir child memorise the answers.

As a parent, what are you teaching yourchild?

That cheating is right? That they cantake short cuts to get further in life?

Having cheated and learnt my lesson,I hope these children will repent and refrainfrom cheating in future.

It would be a sad indictment on societyif some of these children get ahead in lifethrough cheating.

Perhaps the department should goback to the basics.

I believe that if teachers had equippedthe pupils adequately and made sure thatthey went into the exam with confidencethat they would do well, then therewouldn’t be a need to cheat.

But then again, I believe there are somany cracks in our education system thatthe cheating scandal is just the tip of theiceberg.

The Emalangeni Low Cost Housing DevelopmentSanitation Project scope of work includes the replacement of the existing sanitation system to waterbornesanitation. This project cost over R11.7 million and the Phase2A of this project has a contract value of just over R11

million. In a bid to address the triple challenge of unemploy

ment, poverty and inequality, this project also come witha tangible sum of employment opportunities. Ugu Mayor, Councillor Ntombifikile Gumede in her address at thecommunity event, stressed the importance of appointedcontractors to use local labour. Gumede said for any community project, community members of that particulararea should receive first preference when it comes to jobopportunities. “This gives the unemployed a chance todevelop skills while simultaneously addressing povertyand inequality,” she said. Full utilisation of this phase ofthe sanitation system by the beneficiaries is expected byAugust 2016 which is the predicted completion date ofthis project. Ugu District Municipality promotes workingtogether to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for localcommunities. BOOK YOUR SPECIAL DAY TODAY

NOW that the new year is here, wesometimes tend to forget just howlengthy and activity filled 365 days

can be. Yet a simple unexpected, momentary fleeting scent or glimpse can dispersethe mistakes made through previous daysas well as summon enchanted recollections of extraordinary moments.

It is the right moment to turn the page.To reflect that with each starting day of2015 comes the assurance that life is commencing magnificently anew.

One of the first songs I learnt to play onguitar was the House of the Rising Sun,

which unfathomably appears to be theuniversal norm. However, our leisurely seasonal days I believe, belong to anothermemorable song I learnt namely the immortal Summertime.

Summertime,And the livin’ is easyFish are jumpin’And the cotton is highOh, your daddy’s richAnd your mamma’s good looking’So hush little babyDon’t you cryPlayed in the key of A minor and just

what this particular baby has to cry aboutis beneath me. I mean life is good, lots toeat and reap, a dad with bucks and a dropgorgeous mom

We are similarly blessed here in SouthAfricaandshouldcelebratetheexuberanceof summer, and how better than to do itwith simple delicious food.

Besides the rys en vleis, like it or not weare a known nation of salad eaters as well,we always tend to have some form of coldoffering on our tables.

In days gone past this would have consisted of boring ice berg lettuce, sliced cucumbers, grated carrot, sliced tomatoes, chopped onions and for extravagance fetacheese and olives.

Today, thanks to all the media and public interest in food in general, it has become

quite an art. As long as you have a goodimagination and a few key ingredients youcan put together a salad with a variety ofproduce, from smoked chicken, roast vegetables, seafood, pastas exotic lettuces andmushrooms to garden fresh herbs and micro shoots.

For summer salads, I like to use fruitpaired with cold meats and cheeses. Therefreshing clean taste enhances the palette and does not leave one feeling bloated.

Simple summer salad 1Ingredients:100 grams black seedless grapes, sliced

in half100 grams sliced mango100 grams pitted lychees sliced50 grams thinly sliced red onionsSmall bunch finely chopped corianderSweet chili sauce to bindRobertson’s vegetable spice to tasteMethod:Mix the ingredients together add addi

tional items if desired (smoked chicken, cherry tomatoes)

Arrange on plates or in a bowl and serveSimple summer salad 2Ingredients8 tinned or poached pears sliced50 grams grated parmesan1 punnet micro shoots1 punnet micro leaves

ground black pepper to tastesplash olive oilMethod:Toss ingredients together arrange in a

bowl garnish and serve. Before we know it we will be kicking

summer out on its duplicitous ass but untilthen we should finish the song …

One of these morningsYou’re going to rise up singingThen you’ll spread your wingsAnd you’ll take to the skyBut until that morningThere’s a ‘nothing can harm youWith your daddy and mammy standingby

Potting it up: how toplant in containers>> Containers are being used for gardening on balconies or indoors

BRIGHTEN up your patio, livingarea or around your pool withsome container magic. Here's

how.Containers are increasingly being

usedforgardeningonbalconiesorin-doors as they are so versatile. Knee-high containers are easier to main-tain without bending or kneeling.Containers of various heightsmaybeused to add height to a border or cer-tainareasinthegarden.Anattractivecontainer,evenwithoutplants,canbeusedas a focal point, or you canplantherbs tomakeadifferent, edible con-tainer garden feature. Some gardens

haveanalkalinesoil, butplantswhichprefer acid in soil can be planted incontainers by simply adding the cor-rect soil type.

Which one is best?- When choosing containers, re-

member that concrete containersaremuch stronger than many plastictypes, but may be too heavy to movearound freelywhen filledwith soil, soposition heavy containers where youwantthembeforefillingandplanting.

Plastic containers may becomebrittle and crack after time in verywarm, dry areas.

-Unglazed clay containersneed to

bewateredmoreoften indryareasaswaterevaporates through theporousstructure of the pot.

Youcanlinethemwithaplasticlin-er butwhennot lined, make sure thatthe outside of the clay pot is also wa-teredeverytimetheplantsareirrigat-ed.

-It's best to invest in deep pots forsummer planting as shallower typestend to dry out very quickly.

You will need the following whenpotting up a container:

- Container-Riversandtostopwater fromjust

running through your pot

- Bone meal to stimulate rootgrowth

- Potting soil and drainage chips- Aquasoil or Stockosorb- Nitrosol- Decorative stones- Pot and trayPlanting in containers- Ensure that there are enough

drainage holes at the base of the con-tainer.

-Cover thebottomof thecontainerwith a layer of small pebbles. Thelarger the container, the thicker thelayer of pebbles should be.

- Add a layer of wet river sandwhichwill act as a filter and keep thenutrientsaroundtherootof theplant.

- Then cover with a layer of moistcompost.

-Theplantingholeshouldbe16cmwiderthanthediameteroftherootar-ea of the plant.

- Gently remove theplant from theold container.

-Where the roots arematted, gen-tly loosen the damp roots with yourfingertips.

-Roots thatareunnecessarily longshould be cut shorter.

- Pour a little water into the holewhere the plant will be positioned.

- Spread the roots out evenly toavoidbendingthemwhenplacingtheplant in the hole.

- Add 60mg (a handful of bonemeal to the mix).

- Cover the roots with soil.- Add a sprinkling of Aquasoil or

Stockosorb or which will assist withevaporation.

- Firm down the soil around thetransplanted plant and water well.

Creating colourful containers:-Whenplanning tohaveanumber

of pots together, consider the entiresetting.

- Choose plants that will compli-ment each other, the setting and thecontainers that they are in.

- Make use of the wide range ofcolours, textures, foliage and scents.

- Add Aquasoil or Stockosorb toyour potting soil and keep your potswell watered.

- daily watering will probably benecessary in the heat of summer. Donot forget a tray if you are concernedabout water stains.

- Feeding is essential as the rootsare restricted to the confines of thepot.

- Use liquid fertiliser, Nitrosol, once a fortnight for best results.

- Make use of pebbles, statues, wood, etc. to add to the effect.

Great choices for small gardens:- Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

plants (Brunfelsia spp.) grow well infull sun or partial shade. They aresemi-hardyandgrowwell incontain-ers. They produce masses of white, lilac and purple flowers and have awonderfully sweet smell.

- Azaleas are a great containerplant for semi-shady areas. Theyflower in spring, but have an attrac-tive evergreen foliage all year round.

- The indigenous African daisy(Arctotis) grows well in pots, rocker-iesandgardenbanks. It growsbest infull sunandwill toleratestrongwindsand very cold conditions. It is avail-able in a range of bright colours.

-Climbingplantsareagreatchoiceforsmallgardensastheycreate the il-lusionofspacebydrawingtheeyeup-wards.Trybougainvillea,Black-eyedSusan, climbing roses, clematis andsweet peas.

- If you're looking for colourfulflowers thanwill thrive inpots insun-ny areas, try filling themwith the fol-lowing summer blooms: floribundaroses, petunias, gazanias, portulaca, geraniums, dianthus, pelargoniumsand marigolds.

Keepingyour grassgreen

Sunny days should be spent out-

causethetopsectionofthesoiltodryout, which means the grass rootswill digdowndeepl to reach thewa-ter that has been stored there. Wa-tering your lawn frequently meansthat the roots will not bother tosearch for water below becausethere will always be water near thetop. Also, grass that is watered toooften will create clumps and run-ners that block soil from being ableto access sunlight and water. Thisweakens your grass.

Post-mowing careAfter mowing, leave grass clip-

pings on the lawn. They will breakdownand compost, which adds nu-trients to the soil.

Beware of the 30year home loan>> 30year bond will result in a64% greater interest payable

POTENTIALhomeownersneedtolookverycarefully at the financial impact of the ad-ditional interest when taking out a bond

over a 30-year period, instead of the recom-mended 20 years.

“On face value, taking out a 30-year bondmay look attractive as lower monthly costs ap-pearmoreaffordable,a30-yearbondwillresultin a 64% greater interest payable compared toa20-yearoption,whichnomatterhowyou lookat it, is not in your financial best interest,” saysTommyNel, headof credit at FNBHomeLoans.

The reasons consumers tend to choose a30-year loan repayment are because of the lowermonthly bond repayments, or to purchase ahouse that is around 10%more expensive thanwhat is afforded to them on a 20-year bond.

For example, if youbuy ahome for theprop-erty value of R1million, at prime, which is cur-rently at 9.25%ona20-year loan term, your re-payments would be R9 159. If you only pay theminimum installments for the 240 term, youwould have paid back R2.2 million by the endof the loan term.

Under a 30-year loan term option, your re-payment will be marginally less, at R8 227 amonth. However, at the end of the term youwould have paid back a total of R2.96 million.R764 000 more than the 20-year bond.

“On the 30-year option, your installmentswill be around 10% lower a month, whichamounts to a ‘saving’ of R932 a month,” saysNel.

“There is a possibility, if you are dedicatedand invest this towards a long-term goal, youmaypotentiallyearnahigherrateofreturnthan

what you have paid on your home loan. It musthowever be noted that such a course of actioninvolvesmuchhigherlevelsofriskthanthesaferoption of paying off your home loan sooner. Ifhowever instead, these additional funds werespent on consumables on amonthly basis, con-sumers would undoubtedly be worse off finan-cially in the long haul.”

While consumersmaybeswayedby theper-ceived short-term gain, the hefty interest accu-mulated as a result of the higher comparable

outstandingbalanceandtheadditional10-yearperiod should be seriously considered whenmaking the decision take out a longer termhome loan Nel points out.

After year five on a 20-year home loan youwould have paid off11%, while only pay-ing off 4% on the 30-year option. After 10years, youwouldhavepaid off almost 30% of

standing balance of your home loan, whether itis20yearsor30years.Therefore, ifyoucanpaymore than is contractually required you willbring the total interest down as well as reducethe home-loan term,” says Nel.

FNB does not cur-rently offer 30-yearhomeloansbecauseofthese reasons, andwould only considerdoing so in future if itis able to ensure cus-tomers are able tomakean informedde-cision in terms of thisas a financing option.

“Thereisveryrare-ly a circumstance thattaking out a 30 yearbond for your homewill be of financialbenefit,” says Nel.

“Therefore before you jump at the lowermonthly repaymentoption, lookcarefullyat thelong term financial impact of taking out a homeloan for the additional 10 years.”

Before you tie the knotBEFOREyou say “I do”, ensure that you areaware of all the details of a marriage con-tract

Why draft a marriage contract? In its most basic legal sense, marriage is

incommunityofproperty. Whenmarried incommunity of property, the estates of bothparties are merged into one estate with anapplicable50/50splitofallassetsandliabil-ities in the event of death or divorce.

Any legalagreement, frombondapplica-tions to cell phone contracts, need to besignedbybothparties.Italsomeansthatanypotential and future legal disasters, such asinsolvencyordebt, are liabletobothparties.Should you divorce, all assets and liabilitiesare shared by both partners. In the event ofthe death of onepartner, the survivingpart-ner is left unprotected.

By gettingmarriedwithout an ante nup-tial contract (ANC), you are automaticallymarried in community of property and putyourself and your spouse at unnecessaryrisk.

What is an ANC?An ante nuptial contract allows both

parties to retain any assets held before, aswell as acquired during, the marriage. Themaingoalistoallowbothpartiestoenjoythelegal freedoms held beforemarriage and toprotect both partners from financial disas-

ters that may occur in the future.Ifpartieswishtoenterintoamarriageout

of community of property (in other wordsto avoid the “we share everything” princi-ple), they need to sign an ante nuptial con-tract. Themain benefit of anANC is that theproperties, debt or assets of both remaincompletely separate. There is also protec-tion for either spouses in the event of insol-vency, death or divorce.

Marriage out of community of propertythereforeworks on the principle of “what ismine is mine, what is yours is yours”.

What type of ANC do you need?TheANCwithaccrual isavariationof the

ANC.Anyassetyouhadbeforethemarriageremains yours, but both partners are enti-tled to a 50/50 share in the estate growth ofthe combinedestates that occursduring themarriage.

The accrual is only calculated during di-vorce or after one partner dies.

Marriage out of community of propertywith the accrual system thereforeworks ontheprinciple of “I amentitled tohalf ofwhatyou have earned during our marriage.”

Building a better future through roads infrastructure

Greetings in the name of development, in our new service delivery column. It always bringsjoy to see one’s wishes come true. Our wish as Umzumbe Municipality, was to receivea clean audit opinion on the previous financial year (2013/14). To secure that clean auditopinion, we had to put in extra effort and work even harder, ensuring that service deliveryprograms reach the communities we are serving. As a result, the Auditor General declaredthat Umzumbe Municipality has received a clean audit opinion, thus painting a clear picturethat our financial books are in order, municipal funds are channeled to relevant developmentprograms as outlined in our SDBIP. This has brought so much delight.

Getting such an achievement has never been a smooth and rosy journey. It has practicallyinvolved rapid development of infrastructure projects and emancipation of service deliveryto the communities that we are serving. Recently, we have done sod turnings of new roadsinfrastructure, which includes Msontini access road in Ward-7, Masenti access road inWard-9, Isigubho access road in Ward-3, and many more roads to be constructed. We havealso officially handed over Zakhe access road in Ward-14, Isivivane access in Ward-8 andOthandweni access road in Ward-15.

Some of the roads infrastructure that we are constructing have never existed before, westarted them from scratch. Such projects include Vethe access road in Ward-6, which is noweasily connecting St Faiths and Mqangqala area. It is evident that after completion on thismagnificent project which includes a bridge aiding people to move back to their originalareas due to easy access and flow of transport. In Ward-9, Mgayi area, the communityapplauds Umzumbe municipality for the construction of Mbiyane access road and IfafaBridge. The infrastructure makes it easy for the community to reach out Umzinto town.Newly constructed Isivivane access road in Ward-8 connect Nyavini area and Number-7. Allthese projects highlight the Umzumbe infrastructure program.

Bhunwini access road and its bridge is under construction in Ward-19. This road willsafeguard accessibility particularly during rainy seasons. Communities and workers on siteof our road infrastructure development have witnessed that we improvise with concrete onsteep areas. Most parts of Mpelazwe access road in Ward-18 is constructed with concretedue to the nature of topography which fail to sustain the rainy season. Zakhe access roadin Ward-14, also falls on the roads constructed with concrete, this infrastructure also boaststwo strong and reliable bridges.

Umzumbe Municipality has numerous service delivery programs underway and in its plans.Let’s give you more interesting news of development in Umzumbe, in the next issue of ourdevelopment column.

Four steps to buyingthe perfect carbattery1. Become a battery aficionado

Do a little desktop research beforehand. Take alook at the different brands on the market, consumerreviews, the maintenance requirements of the battery, and the requirements of your vehicle’s warranty.

Choosing the correct size battery is also essential some manufacturers have online selection guideswhere you can input the make and model of your vehicle to determine which battery best suits your car.

Very often, when it comes to choosing a battery,‘local is lekker’.

You can be sure that batteries manufactured inSouth Africa comply with all relevant safety and quality standards and are recognised for their after saleservice.

Keep in mind that some of the leading brands alsooffer mobile fitment browse online to find your closest mobile unit.

2. Learn the lingo…Familiarise yourself with some ‘sparkling’ termi

nology….Cold cranking amps (CCA): The measurement of

a battery’s ability to start your vehicle in cold weather. When it’s cold, the battery is at its weakest makingthe engine difficult to start. Compare this to your vehi

cle’s cranking rate – the battery’s CCA rating shouldmeet or exceed this.

Reserve capacity: The number of minutes your carmight run using the battery alone, should your alternator (which is responsible for recharging your battery) fail. This should be as high as possible – obvs.

Fitment: Refers to the outside dimensions andplacement of power terminals on the battery. Vehiclemakes have different sizes and terminal layouts, butyou should always go with what is recommended foryour car by a recognised fitment centre.

3. Check the shelf lifeAutomotive lead acid batteries have a limited

shelf life and are very similar to food products withan expiry date. Insist that the fitment centre test thebattery before they fit the battery in your car.

Some tech savvy manufacturers have put QRcodes on their batteries, be sure to scan these withyour phone before the battery is installed. This allowsyou to register online for additional information andprovides access to benefits such as longer warrantyperiods and after sales service.

4. Chuck it… responsiblyMake sure to dispose of the battery safely and re

sponsibly. Batteries contain lead, acid and plastic andare hazardous for the environment, so take it to yournearest service centre for recycling.

In fact, most fitment centres will collect the oldbattery from you. There are also some very interestingand creative ‘go green’ campaigns from some of themore responsible manufacturers and brands, so keepa look out.
