AFTER weeks of vigorous prepa-rations, Independent ElectoralCommission (IEC) area manager
for UguDistrict, Simphiwe Yeni, said the2014 National and Provincial Electionsproceeded according to plan.
A total of 118 voting stations in thedistrict opened at 7am on Wednesdayfor locals to exercise their democraticright to vote.
“I received a phone call at 5:12amfrom police officers at Margate sayingthat people were already there queuingto vote. That’s how eager people were,”he said.
He added that while driving past avoting station at about 4:30am in Um-zumbe, a group of people had alreadygathered outside.
“I was amazed at how much interestthe people of this district have shown.”
He did say, however, that he was dis-appointed at the number of people, par-ticularly youngsters, who visited manyof the IEC offices in the district twoweeks prior to the elections to ask ifthey could still register to vote.
“This is something we asSouthAfri-cans must work towards for the 2016local government elections. Wemust allencourage and persuade youngsters toregister to vote.”
He said there was a strong policepresence at voting stations and thatofficials were asked to keep a close eyeon any unwarranted behaviour.
There were reports of ANC support-ers toy-toying in Jesus Location, Bhob-hoyi, but no acts of violence were re-ported.
At the Port Shepstone Civic Centrepolling station, voting got off to a slowstart in the morning but picked up paceas excited voters arrived to make theirmark. The mood was upbeat and jovialas some voters chatted outside aftercasting their ballots.
IEC officials at the station said noserious incidents had been reportedby midday.

Are you sitting on a pot of gold?
Its an old saying that we all wish wastrue. But it is likely that you do haveitems in your home that are rare, valuable, or collectable and you justdon’t know, or are unsure of their val-ue, and you don’t know an expert toask. This is where Roy Dibley from theAntiqueWarehouse, a Cape Town basedcompany can help. He offers a free noobligation home visit service to view, value, appraise, and even buy yourhidden treasures. Roy tells us he is in-terested in the old and unusual itemsas well as the more obvious such asJewellery, Watches, Medals, old Coins,Silver and Gold in any form or condi-tion. Roy says he loves to go throughGranddads old chest or Granny’s jew-ellery box. I have found the most valu-able things in the strangest of places.Like gold chains in the children’sdress up closet, and war medals in the
bottom of great aunt’s sewing box. Andlets face it we all have things sitting indrawers, boxes and safes that we don’tknow what to do with. The children don’twant it, is another thing Roy often hears, what do they want old candle sticks andsilver trays for, and what would they dowith uncle Bob’s old war memorabiliathey did not even know him. Wouldn’tyou be better off getting paid for it. Royhas an eye that has been trained to spotrarities, be it an old watch, a medal or avase. And with over 30 years experiencehe knows what he is talking about. Soif you have items you are unsure aboutor things you know about and wantthem valued or sold give Roy a call. Hewill be in your area for the next week.Nothing is too small or too much. Andlet’s face it in this economy we would alllike the cash for the pot of gold we mightbe sitting on.
We will be in the KZN South Coast area from8th to 16th May 2014 for free home visits.
GINISILE NDOVELA>>[email protected]
PROVINCIAL community coordinator forAfriforum, Chris Fourie, has called for thedisbandment of Ugu District Municipality because of its “failure to supply waterto residents” and for becoming “chroni
cally ineffective”. This comes after theSouth Coast region experienced waterinterruptions that started in Februaryand worsened after several months, leading to a “Stop Ugu” campaign beinglaunched in Ramsgate, along with a website.
Fourie said residents of the SouthCoast have in the past few years witnessed a “drastic deterioration” in servicedelivery.
“During the past month, Ugu failedto supply water to our tourism areasand upon request was unable or unwillingto inform residents when repairs were tobe completed”.
According to Fourie, these events haveplaced Ugu in the chronically inept category and their failure to deal with theproblem has left AfriForum with no alternative but to institute action.
Ugu District municipal manager,
Dhanpalan Naidoo, said that the municipality is aware of Afriforum’s initiative toseek support for disbandment.
“Whilst the Constitution grants citizens the freedom to engage in such civicliberties, such a call must be based onfactual information.
“We will unashamedly declare thatwe have challenges with water provisionwherein our demand far exceeds our supply. This coupled with our ageing infra
structure magnifies our challenges.“We have to provide water to areas
not reticulated before and still upgradeinfrastructure to deal with increased demand in existing supply areas,” saidNaidoo.
He said that he believes that, notwithstanding their challenges, Ugu District Municipality is meeting its constitutional mandate of providing access to potable water for local citizens.

How KZN’s ‘big cable’syndicate crew was nabbed
‘Operation Nuclear’ has slowed theft of Eskom and Transnet cables to a trickle, reports ROWAN PHILP …
ON a cloudless night, a singlelightning flash lights up theskies of Hibberdene.
A moment after a man yanks ona long rope connected to a boltcutter dangling four metres abovethe railway line; the 11 000 voltsof the green flamemelts the soil be-tween the sleepers into a kind of clay.
Waiting for the cable to cool, hedoesn’t know that two private inves-tigators and a Hawks task team areparked in the darkness nearby.
Tall, scarred and looking olderthan his 38 years, the Mozambicanman shoots pool to unwind andprefers Johnny Walker and ChivasRegal. When women call him on hiscellphone tomake a date - andmanydo-heresponds“justcallmeMillion”.At the heist, he phones his driver tocollect his loaders and drop them atthe scene to bundle the copper.
There are roughly 10 similar“lightning” flashes every night inKwaZulu-Natal, no matter theweather, as copper syndicates shortout power lines at municipal sub-stations and road-side power lines.
However, that single flash inHibberdene in November signalledthe end of a major syndicate and acrippling 20 month phenomenon inKZN - the theft of “big cable”.
An ex-colonel with the SAPS, JanWolmarans - head of cable theft for aCombined Private Investigations, which tackles copper syndicates forEskom and Transnet - had been tail-ing Million since his team tried tostrip the overhead cables from Ash-burton the night before the bust.
At massive personal risk, twoundercover Hawks officers infiltrat-
ed the crew and had built up a casewhich now includes racketeeringcharges. Wolmarans says theft ofthe big 88 000 volt Eskom lines andthe 11 000 volt Transnet lines “basi-cally didn’t exist” in KZN until Mil-lion and the rest of his syndicatemoved from Mpumalanga in March
2012. For the next 20 months, theparastatalssuffered“tensofmillions”in losses as overhead cables werestripped twice each week, from Est-court down to Hibberdene, and up toRichards Bay.
Last year alone, CPI recorded 86crime scenes in KZN, in which over-
head cables owned by Eskom orTransnet were cut - “and in everycase, trains were delayed or thepower was out”.
Wolmarans says a joint CPI/Hawks project, called Operation Nu-clear, took down the big cable syndi-cate in two dramatic busts: one in
September 2012, and one in No-vember last year, with 32 membersnow on trial.
He said that while Telkom, Prasa, municipalities and the mines are in-creasingly plundered in KZN, thetheft of Eskom and Transnet over-head cable has since reduced to atrickle.
On that night of the Hibberdeneflash, Million and his seven col-leagues bundled 680 kg ofcable intotwo bakkies, and - heading for theirbuyer, northofDurban -droveout in-to a trap.
Hawks detectives, dog unit offic-ers, and tactical response policejoinedWolmarans and his colleague,Nico Smith, as they blocked the cop-per crew at a robot. Million boltedon foot.
“That Million ran 20 kilometresfrom us,barefoot,neverstopping-anincredible feat of fitness,” said Wol-marans.
He said the blitz on KZN’s over-head cables began when four cablethieves escaped from the Hazeyviewpolicestation inMpumalangainearly2012. He said the escapees and theirHighveld gang fled to Durban, andsplit into two crews, triggeringmonths of mayhem.
But Daveyton appears to be thenational headquarters for coppersyndicates.
One expert told The Fever thatsuspects had reported an organisedcriminal “training school” there, where cutters were taught how tosafely short-out live lines.
Following Operation Nuclear, 32alleged syndicate members are nowfacing trial in Pietermaritzburg.

BREAKING: in amove called“dumb and incredibly dan-gerous”, members of the
South African government whosit in executive positions havetaken a unanimous vote to “tellthe truth at all costs”.
The decision allegedly materi-alised after an international bil-lionaire funder – who will remainanonymous until some random12-year-old hacks official emails –is said to have pledged $1 millionfor each“truth”told in parliamentand at public rallies and confer-ences.
The move comes after the bil-lionaire allegedly had the revela-tion while beating his headagainst a brick wall at the out-
come of South Africa’s recent na-tional election.
Such was the enthusiasm ofthenation’spublic servants to “getinvolved and make a difference”through “Truthgate” that for thefirst time in its recorded history, all representatives stayed awakeduring the latest parliamentarysitting to vote. This included an85-year-old political veteran whowas allegedly in a coma for thepast 20 years.
Speaking after the voting ses-sion, one official told the floor:“Comrades, I am happy with theoutcome of the Truthgate vote be-cause it grates my biscuit to sithere and lie about having a mas-ter’s degree in politics. I am just afailed chef with a KFC fetish.
“Also, Iamsickof calling every-one comrade; it’s very 1994.”
A second official then took tothe floor and stated: “Fellowcountrymen andwomen, I am ex-cited at the potential upliftmentthat can be achieved throughTruthgate.
“Finally I have a chance to tellconstituents that an overflowingsewage pipe alongside a crèche isnot a health hazard – it is an op-
portunity for the community topull together and shovel the sh*tthemselves. The sh*t can then beused as a nice compost on thecommunity vegetable garden thatwe may build in 2016.
“In the interim, the shovelledsh*t can be placed next to theroundabout and slide as a littleclimbing mountain for kiddies.”
Speaking from uMhlanga aftertaking her vote via Skype duringa botox party, one official told theFever: “The potential ramifica-tions of Truthgate are enormousand heartening.
“With Truthgate comes the op-portunity to finally meet our mil-lennium development goals – theones that have been slightlytweaked for our area.
“Truthgate finally gives me theopportunity to satisfy my Messiahcomplex and to emulate Oprahby canvassing among the middleandworkingclasses. I now feelnoshame in donning my latex glovesso I can give sales assistants anddomestic workers a pat on theirgrubby clothing.
“In fact, I can nowunashamed-ly utilise public funds to book afive-star retreat and take poten-tial future school-girl voters fromthe street there in order to givethem free manicures and pedi-cures.
“Looking good while you aregetting educated can go a longway in building a girl-child’s pros-pects; this way she can marryrich and will hopefully never haveto think independently again.Youget one, I get one,we all get freemanis and pedis,” she hollered.
UPDATE: The billionaire funderhas since clarified that he will bepaying those partaking in Truth-gate in the Zimbabwean dollar, adefunct currency. People inter-viewed for this article have sincedenied any knowledge of Truth-gate or the above statements.

Billionaire’s ambitiouscash-for-truth incentive
WE’VE seen politicians come outin their numbers in the past fewweeksas they try towoothosewhoare still “undecided” on votes.
Now, it all boils down to theSouth African public who, hope-fully,made their way to the pollingstation to cast their votes.
The Fever has received manyletters from councillors who areeither asking for more jobs, slat-ing the “cheappoliticking”of oth-
er parties and even those whowant to share their “brilliant ef-forts” made in the past four years.
We’ve also received invitationsto many political events aroundthe province.
With the price of petrol comingdown this week, the number ofkeys that havebeenhanded tonewhome owners and food parcels, many South Africans hope thatelectionswould take place annual-
ly. We’ve also had the privilege ofmeeting residents who spokeabout casting their vote for the firsttime in 1994.
They shared their joyous sto-ries describing the moment theyfelt they were a part of South Afri-ca’s history when they made theirmark. After a spate of public holi-days,many locals havebeen soak-ing up the last few rays of thesummer sun as they took time to
enjoy their time off at the beach. Some were totally unaware thatelections were days away. Wewould like to hear about your vot-ing experience. Share yourthoughts with the Fever. Send usyour photos, stories and even“selfies” before or after you’vemade your mark. E-mail [email protected] also wish all mothers a veryhappy Mother’s Day this Sunday.

I WOULD like to praise the staff ofthe Ugu Health Department for taking time out of their busy schedule tosee me. They came all the way tovisit me in my home and listened tomy problems.
I asked if we could have flu pills, multivitamins and vitamin C at theclinic.
They told me that the nationalgovernment decides what medicinewe get at the clinic and all clinicsthroughout the country get the samemedicine.
I requested that we get a psychologist at the local clinics like othermunicipalities have.
They told me they do not havebudget for it. I do not believe this, con
sidering all I’ve read in the newspaperabout Ugu’s mismanagement offunds, but I did not argue becauseIknowthese particularstaffarenotthedecision makers in this regard.
I complained about the psychiatrist at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital and they said they’ll talk to him. They told me that they want to hearpeople’s complaints and feedback.
I relayed my thanks to the government for providing my chronic medication at the clinic each month.
It’s made a huge difference to mylife and has allowed me to live a normal life.
I just want to give praise where it’sdue.

Praise for Ugu Health
FREEDOM Day has come andgone, so has Workers’ Day andthe national elections.
For some thesedayshaveush-ered in some “winds of change;”while in others the rain wouldhave brought in “tears of joy”and for many the sunshinewould have been the“rays ofhope.”
Whilst celebrating our secretjoys, let’s spare a thought for thealmost six million young and ea-ger-for-jobs South Africans, whohaveeitherbecomevictimsof oureducation systemor the lack of it.
The State is guilty of tardinessin creating jobs and the unfairlegislation of Affirmative Action.
Let us spare a second thoughtfor victims of our country’s back-breaker – the strikes.
The 13-week-old platinummine strike has cost the industryalmost R15 billion and the work-ers almost three months’ pay.
The unions and their bosses, whohave really lost nothinghere, are demanding a basic wage of
R12 500 permonth, which themines cannot afford. In the faceof this affront from the unions, the mines have taken their offerdirectly to the workers.
The unions are not happyabout this, but workers haverights too. They have the right tosell their labour to anyone theyplease and many have repliedvia sms that they wish to return.
Forthesepeople,Workers’Daywould have been a gloomy day.
What a goldenopportunity forthe government of the day to stepin as honest broker and helpmin-ers, workers and unions reach acompromise - honest, being theoperative word.
So while we may enjoy thesedays, spare a thought for the job-less and another for the damagethese extended weekends are do-ing to our economy. And spare athought for our children who gowithout lessons because schoolshave closed for entire weeks.
J.R.Port Shepstone
Think about the jobless
I AM glad that this Bike Week and thenoise it brought with it is over.
What I’ll bet on not happening isa flurry of letters from residents com-plaining about the noise, as happensevery time we host our own events inpublic areas in Margate and at thebeach, even during daytime.
I know well that those complaintswon’t be coming because of doublestandards and that some sections ofour population still consider them-
selves better than others.I live in Margate and the whole
weekend my family and I were keptawake by the sound of thousands ofmotor bikes driving up and down mystreet. It was only on Sunday that Icould finally get a peaceful sleep.
My sister, who lives in Umtentweni, experienced the same problem as bik-ers were driving up and down herstreet at all hours of night and day.
These double standards and une-
qual treatment greatly influenced myvote because I know that should apartylike the DA win the election, it wouldmean a reversal back to apartheid.
I’m very happy that the ANC isgoing to win these elections and whatshould be done now is to make surethat we all treat each other as equals.
Those who whinge unnecessarilyshould know that they have no choicebut to integrate.
Thabo Magagula
Why don’t you whinge about Bike Week too?BIKERS! A word which some ofthe so-called locals prefer to be aswear word and others, like my-self, appreciate.
Although I am living ona semi-permanent base in the HibiscusCoast region, there aremany rea-sons why I enjoy the bikers’ com-pany.
In the first place, I am over 65and can’t afford one of these ex-pensive luxuries. The second rea-
son is the financial boost to theHibiscus Coast region, which weallneed. Then there is thededica-tion which went into all thesebikes and the spotless displaywhich bikers as well as “non-bik-ers” can enjoy.
As a photographer I havenev-er missed-out on this event inthe past six years and hope thereare more to come.

MARGATE feral cats, Percy andSupercat are most probablythe only South Coasters that
have never attended Africa BikeWeek. Their care-giver, ColeenWalther, has made a standing reser-vation at the SPCA for a week, everyyear during bike week.
“They’re safer at the SPCA becauseMargate is so busy. I also book themin for New Year’s Eve,” she said.
Percy made the Mugg and Beanhis home about eight years ago whileSupercat was a kitten when he wasfound in Margate three years ago.
Walther, who is a waitress at Lar-ry’s restaurant on Margate beach, takes care of the cats at night whileshe’s at work.
Percy spends his day at the MuggandBean, also onMargate beachfrontand then runs across the road to Lar-ry’s when Walther begins her shift.
“Everybody in Margate knowsPercy and Supercat. Everybody lovesthem,” she said.
Walther provides food not only forthese two cats but 30 others that livein the Shoprite parking lot and eightmore that live near a salon.
“People are amazed at how theyrespond to me when I feed them,” shesaid.
The female cats have all beenspayed, except for one which Walthersays she’s trying very hard to catch.
“It’s the responsible thing to do.We don’t want more cats on thestreets that are going to suffer. Thereare others who also take care of feralcats and we try our best to get them
spayed.”Supercat got his name from some-
one on Facebook because of the v-shaped design under his neck.
“I asked people on a Facebookgroup for a name. Someone suggestedSupercat because the pattern on hisfur was similar to Superman.”

Minion freeafter rehab>> ‘Cantankerous’ seal sets sights on home
AFTER sevenmonths inrehab,Minion, a youngSubantarctic fur seal,
returned to the ocean just be-fore sunrise on Friday.
He arrived at uShaka SeaWorld on 28 September lastyear in a severely compro-mised condition after beingfound stranded on the beachat Port Edward.
Unfortunately, he had sus-tained injuries to his flipperand lower back, possibly theresult of a shark bite, butafter a few days in the care ofthe uShaka rehabilitationstaff, he started eating welland it was clear that he had astrong will to survive.
His progress was slow butsteady and it took sevenmonths before he was fitenough for release.
For the first few monthshe did little other than lie onthe side of the pool, perkingup only at feeding times.
As he grew stronger hespent more and more time inthe water and by January2014 he was spending the
better half of the day swim-ming, grooming, andstrengthening his back mus-cleswhich had suffered trau-ma of unknown origin.
Minion was not an affec-tionate seal and could bequite cantankerous if he didnot receive the response hehoped for, from his care giv-ers.
His great passion was eat-ing and when the cooler boxemptied after a healthy mealhe was vocally unforgivingand took a while to settledown again.
He was dearly loved bythe staff who were in awe ofhis tenacious spirit and theydedicated hundreds of hourscaring for this little championuntil finally the day arrivedwhen the uShaka’s residentveterinarian gave him the allclear for release.
uShaka SeaWorld is a longway from Minion’s homewhich we imagine would bein the region of Marion andPrince Edward Islands andhe needed to be released as
close tohisfeedinggroundsaspossible.
In preparation for releasehe was flown to Bayworld inPort Elizabeth where he wasfitted with a Telonics satellitetag before heading out to seain a rubber duck.
Minion was released 15nautical miles from Cape Re-ceife and about 12 nauticalmiles from closest shore.
Once the door of his cratewas opened he went straightto the sea without hesitation.
He initially seemed tohead towards land but thencurved south towards thecontinental shelf which is ex-actly what was hoped hewould do.
uShaka will receive dailyreports and keep track ofMinion’s movements over thenext year.
This data and the datatransmitted by other seals in-cluding Selso the elephantseal, whowere fittedwith sat-ellite tags, is being monitoredand managed by oceans andcoasts.
PHOTO: SUPPLIEDMinion, who was rescued in Port Edward last year, was released back into the ocean last week.

TOURISM 360JUSTINMACKRORY:CEO SOUTHCOAST TOURISM
LAST week we hosted Carol Co-etzee, the newCEOof theKwa-Zulu-Natal Film Commission
(KZNFC).The purpose of her visit was not
only to witness the impact AfricaBike Week has on Margate and envi-rons, but also to establish a strongworking relationship between our-selves and this influential commis-sion.
Ugu South Coast Tourism was thefirst in KZN to provide KZNFC with
an initial resumé of our film poten-tials in our coastal and rural destina-tions and, going forward, we antici-pate presenting to them with a com-prehensive film prospectus.
This prospectus would profile ourfilming assets in termsof thediversi-ty of locations, accommodation andhospitality offerings, transportation(e.g. Margate Airport), productionand logistical support and a host ofother skills that are evident herewithin the Ugu district.
Needless to say, the CEO was im-pressed with not only the destina-tion,butalso thatwehavean inhouseteamwho have film-industry experi-ence at our fingertips.
In theprocess ofuscraftingareal-ly great prospectus, we invite thosewhomaybe able tomake a valid con-tribution to this process (i.e. skillsand visualmaterial) to please contactNikki Tilley at marketing@tourism-south coast.co.za
The economic impact of film
within a broad geographic area isvast. Not only does the hospitalitysector derive benefit as teams ofprofessionals come into town, but al-so in termsofextras, set-buildingandother locally sourced technical re-quirements— all requiring paymentand skills utilisation. The additionalglobal publicity value is incalculable, but vast.
Not long ago, a certain Mr L.DiCaprio was on set here for the filmBlood Diamonds, whichmade an un-
expected contribution towards ourtourism industry. If we can, with theKZNFC, strategically bring films fromEurope, theU.S. thenearandFarEastto our area, the Greater South Coastwill be all the richer as a film destina-tion of merit.
We meet with the KZNFC againduring Indaba 2014 so, who knows, our locals may in future have a step-pingstone tobigger things in the film, video and advert-production world.
Have a great week in paradise.
Filming potential on the Greater South Coast
DR NASH [email protected]
Dear Doctor Nash,
MY husband is aggressive, domineeringand the smallest thing sets him off. He alwaysthreatens divorce and then it all blows over.
It has been like this for years. We talkabout it and then back to square one. Thensomething sets him off again and hebecomesdomineering, controlling and sarcastic.
Over the years the children and I havelearnt to cope but it is getting too much, andwe are all suffering. He can be so nice, but heblamesme for everything, he is never at fault.
We have a good business and a goodhome, but for him something always goeswrong. He blames me and then he sulks, likea spoilt little boy,Hehas all the answers. Eve-rything must be his way.
Lost Lady
Dear Lost Lady,
I think there aremany other “Lost Ladies”out there with you. So many of today’s malesreally think they are the answer to awoman’sprayer.
Your man obviously sees himself as aleader, and he does seem to have a good sideto him which seems to be covered by hisdomineering and almost a fear of beingwrong or blamed. I doubt whether he wouldsee a psychologist. I suggest that you couldbenefit from consulting a good clinical psy-chologist who may enable you to work onstrategies that could in turn make a differ-ence to husband and how he sees himself.
It would certainly enable you to buildyourself up and also help you to be construc-tive in the family relationship.
Husband is aggressive, domineeringDear Doctor Nash,
I HAVE a husband who has not yet cut theapron strings. He just has to visit his parentsevery chance he can.
I am happy for him to go when I am doingsomething like my dancing classes, but they areonly twice a week and he wants to visit everynight, Monday to Friday.
Now he is trying to get me to watch soapiesfrom5pm to 6pm, Mondays to Fridays so that hecan then go to visit his parents.
I am fine with him going twice a week when Iamatmydanceclass, orhecanmakesupperandthen visit his parents over the weekend, once amonth, withme, hiswife. What isgoingtohappenwhenwehavechildren?HowdoIgetmyhusbandto concentrate on us?
Mrs M.B.
Dear Mrs M.B,
You are a jewel among the ladies. You are notaddicted to the pernicious soapies. For yourhusband-what ishiscaseor ishereactingtoyourtwice weekly dance classes?
Certainly, to visit his parents five nights aweekseemsa littleoften, andcouldevenhint thathe is not finding sufficient happiness in yourcompany. How long have you beenmarried andhowlonghasthishabitofhisbeenonthego?Whatdoes he want out of his marriage?
Once you take out his working hours and hisvisiting hours and time asleep, there is notmuchleft in which to build love and marriage.
I think youmust have a straight talkwith hus-band and ask him what a marriage partnershipneeds to survive. If he doesn’t know, send him tohis parents.

STANLEY Anderson, marketing directorat Hyundai Automotive South Africa, explained that the only reason the Ac
cent hatchback was not launched earlier inSouth Africa was a supply and importanceissue. In global distribution rankings, SouthAfrica ranks only 11th among the countriesimporting Hyundai’s vehicles. We buy50 305 sedans, hatches and bakkies, compared with China’s 1 010 086 (first placed)and seventhplaced Australia’s 97 006 vehicles.
But now, he said, the time is ripe tolaunch the twoyearold Accent hatch locally for a slice of the Bsegment pieagainst the Mazda3, Toyota Auris, Chevrolet Sonic and Cruze, Opel Astra, and evenstable mate the Kia Cerato.
Anderson said he is so confident aboutthe Accent’s pricing and specification thathe has advised his competing importers atKia that they may want to order fewer Cerato hatches in the coming months. He doesnot expect the Accent to cannibalise salesfrom the Hyundai stable either.
“The Accent hatchback fits in very wellin the local Hyundai range between the i20and i30 hatchbacks — not only in terms ofprice, but also when it comes to interiorspace for passengers as well as luggagestorage,” said Anderson.
Retailing for just under R235 000 forthe sixspeed manual and R245 000 forthelonggearedfourspeedauto(nottested), the Accent hatch prices range between R225 K and a quarter of a millionrand. In this segment, the Ford Fiesta isking, with over 13% market share, followedby the Toyota Auris (12,7%) and the FordFocus (11,9%). To take on the market leaders, Anderson priced the Accent to comewith everything a young family could need, from a multifunction steering wheel upfront to lots of leg room in the rear. Everything is ergonomically placed. The electricsidemirrorandautomaticwindowcontrolsare integrated in the driver’s door armrest, while there is a sliding armrest in the middle of the seats up front. The centre console houses iPod, USB and Aux ports where
themultimediadeviceswon’tgetbumped.Of note is how idiotfriendly the Accent’sintegrated Bluetooth is, linking as it didwithin seconds to any of the phones withBluetooth in the car. Compare this to the“linked but not paired” results which wasall Witness Wheels could achieve with thenew Ford and Chevrolet systems, which arereportedly both excellent — if you are ofthe Selfie generation and not born on thewrong side of the first moon landing.
In the Accent, we paired the phones tomake phone calls and stream music wirelessly though the audio system. Anotherluxury now considered a standard optionand often overlooked is the air conditioner. The Tata and Etios models set the bar here, with very efficient cooling systems. The Accent’s fourspeed air conditioner did agood job to cool the rear of the cabin quickly.
The Accent’s boot swallows 370 litreswith the 60:40 seats extended, which is acarryon bag less than the Kia Cerato anda whole 117 litres bigger than the capacity
of the smaller Chevrolet Sonic. The Accenthatch can do dirt roads too, riding 14,7 cmhigh (only the Chevrolet Sonic and Kia Cerato are higher among competitors), although this is not enough to take on a farmroad.
Rear coil springs mounted independently over modified shock absorbers andplaced on the ends of the torsion beam create more space in the cabin and ensure apliant ride over Gauteng’s tar roads and ashort section of dirt.
Down Under, the Accent Hatchbackscored a fivestar safety rating in the Australian New Car Assessment Programme(AnCap), coming with driver and passenger air bags, complemented by side andcurtain air bags, and seatbelt pretensioners for the driver and front passenger’s seatbelts. The rear bench has two threepointsafety belts with a lap belt in the middleseat.
Stopping is courtesy of disks all round, with Active safety Antilock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Dis
tribution (EBD) standard. When it comesto power, there is little to choose betweenthe 1,6 mills in the Hyundai Accent(91 kW/156 Nm) and the Toyota Auris(97 kW/160 Nm), although both thesehatches have to stand back for the Chev’s1,4 turbo, which makes 103 kW and200 Nm. The Accent has a timing chain, which with careful driving, can last as longas the engine and does not require to bechanged as often as a timing belt.
In terms of price, the Accent offers a lotof standard features, but so does the Chevrolet Sonic RS, which is at this stageR18 600 cheaper and a decent hatch toboot, while the Kia Cerato saves the buyerR9 905 on the Accent’s tag and the ToyotaAuris XS leaves R4 500 change. Hyundaiboasts a five year/150 000 km warranty(with a lot of fine print worth reading), afiveyear/90 000 km service plan andfiveyear/150 000 km roadside assistance. Service intervals are 15 000 km.
Driving experience paid for by Hyundai.— Witness Wheels.

THE designs on display atthe recent Beijing AutoShow were mostly a caseof out with the new, inwith the old.
Designs of new SUVsespecially suffered froma slavish adherence tothe coupé roofline created by the Land Rover andthe fluid sculptures madepopular by Hyundai.
Put any of these utesin a dark room and eventheir designers wouldfind it difficult to distinguish them from theirprofiles.
The exception thatproved the rule was GWMnew designer, PierreLeclercq, formerly thehead of design at BMW’sM division. He set a newdirection for the company with a concept coupé,which Leclercq saidshows what the HavalSport can look like in2016.
Featuring a particularly striking upright LEDlighting arrangementfront and rear, the HavalCoupé Concept remainsrecognisable even in thedark. Other details tohighlight include thesymmetrical, squareshaped exhaust outletsand striking twotone 22inch alloy wheels.
Changan Eado XT 1,5 turbo makes 125 kW and 230 Nm from 1 950 rpm. Six speakers, park assist and six air bags are among the long list of luxuries. The Eado XT debuted on the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2013, and is based on the Changan Eado sedan that was launched inMarch 2012.

Changfeng CS10 Leopard departs from thiscompany’s bulky Pajero and Cruiser lookalikeswith sleeker lines and a name that suggestspeed.
The Geely Emgrand Cross Concept is a plugin hybrid powered by a 88hp 1.0 litre fourcylinder gasoline engine mated to a 54hpelectric motor. In pure electric mode range is50 kilometer, in hybrid mode 650. Top speedis 190 km/h. The Cross Concept, including thedrive train, looks surprisingly productionreadybut Geely hasn’t confirmed anything just yet.
This is the brand new Haima S5 SUV, it willdebut on the 2014 Beijing Auto Show andlaunch on the China car market in May. Pricewill start around 95.000 yuan and endaround 130.000 yuan. The Haima S5 is thesecond SUV for the Haima brand after thelarger Haima S7. Power comes from a turbocharged 1.5 liter fourcylinder with 150hp and210nm mated to a 5speed manual or a CVTsending power to the front wheels. A naturally aspirated 1.5 will become available inlate 2014 and Haima is working on a 180hp1.8 turbo for 2015.

IT has been a rather eventful pastweek on the South Coast with all thepublic holidays and thousands of bik-ers in town.
I am however, very glad to get myhearing back and not to have to sit inbumper-to-bumper traffic while look-ing for surf at my favourite beaches.
There hasn’t been great surf I’mafraid with only Thursday being theexception.
North-easterly winds made it diffi-cult to find decent waves, but I thinkthe majority of people were just happyto be in the ocean and off for a fewdays.
Congratulations to Alex Nutt whowon the Kumba Iron Ore West CoastClassic. Nutt competes in the boys’ di-vision and secured a well- deservedthird place at the Cape Classic lastweek.
Georgie Mckeone managed a fourthplace at the West Coast Classic.
Eventful surfweek despitehectic winds
THE horseracing world mourns thedeath of legend Bert Hayden, three timesJuly winner and one of the greatest jockeys SA has ever seen. We will miss him.
Legislate won the Guineas, MaybeYes won the Fillies Guineas and BeachBeauty smashed the opposition in winning the Drill Hall Stakes.
Liverpool slipped from a 30 leadagainst Crystal Palace to draw 33 andChelsea drew 00 with Norwich.
These two results have given thePremiership top spot to Man City, whowill now win the league. Arsenal are assured a place in the European Champi
ons League next year.
Sunderland are playing their socks offto avoid relegation, doing well to beatMan United. Norwich are also doing theirbest work now, but I think it’s too littletoo late. This weekend will decide whowins and who goes down.
Wits knocked Chiefs out of the Nedbank Cup, and Pirates also went throughto the next round.
In Super 15 Rugby, Sharks won awayagainst Rebels and stay top of the log.Blues thrashed Reds 4414, Crusadersdrilled Brumbies 4020, Chiefs annihilated Lions 388, Waratahs edged outHurricanes 3930, Stormers squeaked in2928 against Highlander and Bulls
won 2621 against Cheetahs.Once again, I had six out of seven
right, only getting Waratahs wrong. This Friday, Chiefs take on Blues,
which should be a humdinger, with thehome side winning by two points.
Rebels will lose by five points athome to Hurricanes. On Saturday, Highlanders will easily beat Lions by 10points, Brumbies will beat Sharks byfour points, Cheetahs will win at homeby five points against Force, Bulls willpip Stormers by three points and Crusaders will easily account for Reds by 16points, even though they are playingaway. Happy punting.
