There are two basic kinds of “cutting.”
Sharp dissection – cutting with a scalpel or scissors.
• What are the advantages and disadvantages?• When should we use sharp dissection?
Blunt dissection – separating tissues with a blunt probe, scalpel handle, or fingers.
• What are the advantages and disadvantages? • When should we use blunt dissection?
There are two anatomical approaches to dissection
• Regional anatomy – dissection to study the “regions” of the body – head and neck, thorax, abdominal cavity, legs, etc.
• Systemic anatomy – dissection to study the body system: musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory, etc.
• We will use a hybrid combination of approaches.
Neck and thorax
Find:• Trachea and larynx • Thyroid gland • Thymus • Heart: left and right
auricles• Pulmonary artery trunk • Anterior vena cava • Common carotid artery
and vagus nerve • Jugular vein
Neck and thoracic cavity
Find: • Trachea
• Thyroid gland
• L and R auricles of heart
• Pulmonary trunk
• Anterior vena cava
• Common carotid and vagus nerve
Upper abdominal region Find:• Body and pylorus
of stomach • Greater and
lesser curvatures of stomach
• Gall bladder • Cystic duct • Common bile
duct
Abdominal cavity
Find:• Liver • Spleen • Small intestines• Spiral colon• Rectum • Mesentery • Kidney• Ureter • Uterus (horn) • Ovary
Abdominal cavity Find: • Liver • Umbilical vein • Spleen • Pancreas • Small intestine • Mesentery • Spiral colon • Rectum • Kidney • Ureter
Abdominal viscera
Find:• Liver • Stomach • Greater omentum • Spleen • Small intestines • Mesentery • Mesenteric lymph
nodes• Spiral colon
Abdominal cavity: male pig
Find: • Liver and spleen • Stomach • Pancreas• Small intestines and
mesentery • Spiral colon• Kidney and ureter • Vas deferens
Female pig(colon retracted)
Find:
• Small intestine
• Cecum
• Spiral colon
• Kidney and ureters
• Horns of uterus
• Fallopian tube
• Ovaries
Female viscera
Find: • Body of uterus
• Uterine horns
• Fallopian tubes
• Ovaries
• Bladder
• Umbilical artery
Think…
The human uterus has a body but no horns. Why does it make biological sense that pigs, dogs, and cats
have uteri with two well-developed horns?
