Outline Background Information An overview of fertilizer statistics in

Nigeria from 2013 to 2017.

More emphasis is given to the year 2017 and each analysis is based on the products with higher quantities.

Official trade data obtained from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) validated by Fertilizer Technical Working Group –Nigeria (FTWG-NGA)

2017 data validated from the 12th – 13th

April, 2018.

NIGERIAFertilizer Production

Comments• There is primary production of granulated Urea fertilizer in Nigeria by Notore Chemical

Industries PLC and Indorama Group. Both are located at Onne, River state and are planning toupgrade their capacities.

• Indorama started production in June 2016 which reflects on the 2016 and 2017 productionfigures.

• There is also production of SSP but it has been on hold since 2016.

• There are about 22 active blending plants across the country which focuses on blending NPK20 10 10 under the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI).

Comments• NPK continues to be the most imported fertilizers to

Nigeria.

• In 2017, there was a high increase in MOP and DAP imports and huge reduction in the imports of Urea because of the temporal ban on Urea importation for security reasons. Moreover, the government is convinced Nigeria has the capacity to produce enough Urea for the local market.

• As a result the PFI also used locally produced Urea, imported DAP and MOP to produce NPK 20 10 10 for local farmers in Nigeria.

Comments• Increase in production also increased the

volumes of exports of Urea.

• Urea exports has been increasing over the years.2017 saw an increase of 659,603mt from329,630mt in 2016.

NIGERIAFertilizer Apparent Consumption

Comments• There was a 63% increase in apparent consumption for

Nigeria in 2017 compared to the previous year.• The huge increase was mostly due to the Presidential

Fertilizer Initiative (PFI) as well as high production ofurea although carry-over stocks were unknown.

• Urea and NPK continue to be the most used fertilizersin the country.
