A .M. Notes

The Foolishness of the Cross & the Destruction of Wisdom, Part 5 1 Corinthians #13 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 Some say that you shouldn’t push your views on others? So we could ask: Are you pushing that view on me? “The law of non-contradiction is the foundation upon which all rationality is estab-lished” - John Gerstner “There is no truth.” Is that true? If it is true then it is false. If it is false, it is false. Thus it cannot be true. Jeremiah 8:9 Colossians 2:8 Skepticism and every non-Christian assertion will always self-destruct. You can fun with this one: there are no wrong needs. Then say, “I need that to be wrong.” 1 Corinthians 3:19-20 Christianity is the only system of thought that is self consistent. Psalm 5:10-12

P.M. Notes

Hosea’s Book of Baby Names Hosea #2 Hosea 1:3-7 1. God’s wrath is just

Jezreel was the location of battles fought by Deborah and Barak and Gideon. It was the location where Saul was defeated and killed by the Philis-tines, and it was the location of Naboth’s vineyard and the massacre of Ahab’s family. Jezreel is also the location of Megiddo. 2 Kings 9:6-10, 2 Kings 10:30

2. God’s forgiveness is jolting 3. God’s salvation is not jeopardized

Romans 5:6

Soldiers, spears, horses and battles were just as useless at thwarting God’s plan as they would have been in accomplishing it.

New Security Procedures As we strive to boldly display the light of the gospel in an increasingly hostile world, it is important that we continue to monitor our procedures and evaluate pos-sible areas which someone seeking to do us harm might exploit. To that end, based on the recommendation of law-enforcement officials, the deacon board has moved to install panic bar exits on essential points of entry into the church. These mecha-nisms will allow those within the church to exit freely in the case of an emergency, but can be locked securely so that no unauthorized persons can gain access to the church building during our times of worship. Eventually there will be three en-trances with the panic bar installations including the office entrance doors, the fel-lowship hall doors, and the hallway doors, which have already been modified. The goal of this change is to ensure the safety and security of those worshipping to-gether. There have been no specific threats against our church, but rather these changes have been made in an attempt to be proactive and prudent. The primary change that you may experience as you worship with us, is that if you have to leave the sanctuary during the worship service, you will not be able to reenter the building at any other door besides the main entrance to the sanctuary. Therefore, if you need to leave the sanctuary during the worship service for any reason, you will need to exit the sanctuary through the exits on either side of the stage, or through the overflow room exits. If you have any questions, please contact the church office or speak with one of the deacons, we would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Resurrection Hymn 1. See, what a morning, gloriously bright, With the dawning of hope in Jerusalem. Folded the grave-clothes, tomb filled with light As the angels announce, “Christ is risen!” See God’s salvation plan, wrought in love, Borne in pain, paid in sacrifice. Fulfilled in Christ, the Man, for He lives: Christ is risen from the dead. 2. See Mary weeping, “Where is He laid?” As in sorrow she turns from the empty tomb. Hears a voice speaking, calling her name; It’s the Master, the Lord raised to life again! The voice that spans the years, speaking life, Stirring hope, bringing peace to us, Will sound ’til He appears, for He lives: Christ is risen from the dead. 3. One with the Father, Ancient of Days, Through the Spirit who clothes faith with certainty. Honor and blessing, glory and praise To the King crowned with pow’r and authority! And we are raised with Him, death is dead, Love has won, Christ has conquered. And we shall reign with Him, for He lives: Christ is risen from the dead! Articles Can We Escape the Law of Non-Contradiction? By Tim Barnett A while back, I met with a local pastor to talk about apologetics—the defense of the Christian faith. During our friendly discussion, we got on to the subject of the nature of truth, at which time I made a case for the correspondence theory of truth. This particular pastor subscribed to a postmodern view of truth—that there is no objective truth and that truth is a social construction based on linguistic practices. While making my case, I referred to the laws of logic, and specifically, to the law of non-contradiction. The pastor immediately denied the law of non-contradiction. I was completely taken aback and could not believe what I was hearing. It was bad enough that I had to argue for truth, but now I found myself arguing for something as foundational as the laws of logic. For those who don’t know, the law of non-contradiction states that A and not-A (where A is a proposition) cannot both be true at the same time and in the same sense. For example, my car cannot be parked in my driveway and not parked in my driveway at the same time and in the same sense. This just seems so obviously true, and yet this notion was being rejected. This pastor was convinced that the law of non-contradiction is just a Western convention. Furthermore, he indicated to me that he believes that Western “Either-Or” logic is too arrogant, dogmatic, and exclusive. He prefers to use the Eastern “Both-And” system of logic. Fortunately for me, this conversation that I found my-self in was beginning to sound a lot like a story I heard Ravi Zacharias tell during one of his keynote addresses. During my conversation with this pastor, I asked the very same question that Dr. Ravi Zacharias asked the American philosophy professor in his story. I asked, “Are you saying that it’s either the Eastern ‘Both-And’ system or nothing else?” He did-n’t catch it the first time, and simply responded, “Yes!” The question was worth repeating, but this time I put emphasis on two significant words. I asked, “Are you saying that it’s either the Eastern ‘Both-And’ system or nothing else?” That’s when you could see the light bulb go on. A simple smile let me know that he got it! The “Either-Or” logic is impossible to avoid. Ironically, this person needed the law of non-contradiction to try to prove the “Both-And” system. The very fact that he disagreed with me communicated that he really did believe in the law of non-contradiction. The law of non-contradiction isn’t just a Western convention. In fact, it’s not a convention at all. The laws of logic aren’t invented; they’re discovered. They are facts about reality—the way the world really is. There’s no doubt in my mind that this challenge would have caught me off guard if it wasn’t for Dr. Zacharias.

The Law of Non-Contradiction Argues for the God of the Bible and Against Atheism, Hinduism and Buddhism by Joshua Gurtler There is an argument for God that I would like for you to consider. This argu-ment says that without the Christian world-view (which is simply the comprehen-sive belief system, as taught in the Bible), nothing in the world could make rational sense. This is based on three sets of natural laws supported in the scripture: 1. Laws of Logic (e.g., the law of non-contradiction (LNC)) 2. Uniformity of Nature (Laws of nature, the preconditions of science) 3. Laws of morality This is known as the presuppositional approach to apologetics. No other world-view than that of the Bible, including atheism, Buddhism or Hinduism, can account for these three laws. We will only focus on a subgroup of Law #1, which is the law of non-contradiction (LNC). The LNC states that you cannot have A and not-A existing at the same time in the same relationship. Put into practice, the LNC means you cannot have an argument or statement that is self-contradictory (which includes lies). According to the LNC, I cannot affirm that my only dog is dead and simultaneously affirm that my only dog is alive. Atheism Cannot Account for the Law of Non-Contradiction Atheism is typically a belief firmly rooted in materialism. That is, atheism teaches that the material universe is all that exists. However, laws of logic and the LNC are non-material abstract laws that make no sense in an atheistic material universe. According to atheists, our universe and everything in it is a product of purposeless, non-guided, random chance accidents. There are numerous quotes where atheists affirm this. “Such a hypothesis leads to a view of creation in which the entire universe is an accident. In Tyron’s words, ‘Our universe is simply one of those things which hap-pen from time to time.’” [Dr. James Trefil, "The Accidental Universe," Science Di-gest, vol. 92 (June 1984), pp. 53-55, 100-101.] Therefore, in a random chance, happenstance, accidental, unguided material uni-verse, abstract, absolute physical laws would not exist. There is no reason that physical laws should exist and be consistently applied in all parts of an accidental universe. Nevertheless, our universe is extremely finely tuned (anthropic principle) by dozens of known unchangeable laws such as the strong and weak laws of grav-ity, Boyle’s law, the four laws of thermodynamics, laws of electromagnetism, laws of photonics, laws of quantum mechanics, laws of electromagnetic radiation, laws of gravitation and relativity, etc. Laws, including the LNC, must come from a law-giver, a mind, which must have preceded the material universe. God. Hinduism Cannot Account for the Law of Non-Contradiction Laws of logic and the LNC demand a rational reasoned response to a question, which assumes we can formulate reasonable answers by use of our senses. Hindu-

Page 14: Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church - Amazon S3...2019/04/28  · Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church 10050 Ferguson Avenue v Savannah, Georgia 31406 FABC Elders Bob Dimmitt Pastor 912-398-4363

ism, on the other hand, teaches the doctrine of Maya, which states that everything observed within normal human consciousness are simply illusions. Thus, we are trapped in a Hindu world of illusions where right is wrong, black is white, up is down, and the LNC is negated. Consider the following Hindu quotes: “The world in which we live is also not very different from the hall of illusions we read about in the Mahabharata. We also live here enveloped by illusion, in a state of ignorance about ourselves, whereby we fail to discriminate between truth and falsehood, What is Truth? We all suffer from the grand illusion that what we know and experience through our senses is the truth and that we are capa-ble of knowing the facts of our existence with the help of our minds and senses, whereas the truth is we cannot discern reality with our limited consciousness. We cannot answer the question about truth truthfully, because we do not know the an-swer. We may give an answer, some answer, but that answer would not be cor-rect.” [Accessed on 2-28-15 at http://www.hinduwebsite.com/maya.asp] Contrast this with Jesus’ teaching, which says we can know the truth: “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free’” (John 8:31-32). Buddhism and Taoism Cannot Account for the Law of Non-Contradiction Integral to the teaching of modern Buddhism and Taoism is the doctrine of con-tradiction. Both religions claim that contradictions are acceptable and should be incorporated in our reasoning, which denies the law of non-contradiction. Dr. Greg Bahnsen (historic apologist who was a known master of these argu-ments) used to say that if anyone denied the law of non-contradiction, you could tell them “oh, so you don’t deny it.” Then they would respond, “No, I do deny it.” Then you would respond, “Yes, but if you deny it, then you also don’t deny it.” Here are some descriptions of Buddhism and Taoism denying the LNC: “Buddhist logicians sometimes added a fifth possibility: none of these. (Both posi-tions were called the catushkoti.) The Jains went even further and advocated the possibility of contradictory values of the kind: true (only) and both true and false. Contradictory utterances are a commonplace in Taoism. . . When Bud-dhism and Taoism fused to form Chan (or Zen, to give it its Japanese name), a phi-losophy arose in which contradiction plays a central role. The very process for reaching enlightenment (Prajna) is a process, according to Suzuki (1969, p. 55), “which is at once above and in the process of reasoning. This is a contradiction, formally considered, but in truth, this contradiction is itself made possible because of Prajna.” [Accessed on 2-28-15 at http://stanford.library.usyd.edu.au/archives/fall2008/entries/dialetheism] “As Buddhism evolved over the centuries, many different authors from varying cultures set forth their own ideas in the name of the Buddha. As a result, Buddhism developed inherent contradictions. When this was realized, Buddhism embraced these contradictions as a badge of honor. Thus the making of self-contradictory statements has become one of the pronounced features of Zen and other esoteric forms of Buddhism.” [Accessed on 2-28-15 at http://www.faithdefenders.com/articles/worldreligions/BuddhismUnmasked.html]

15 Cont. on p. 16

The Only Rational, Reasonable, Non-Contradictory Alternative is the God of the Bible Both Hinduism and Buddhism construct a universe that deny simple laws of logic leading to a confusing, nonsensical, irrational, and contradictory existence. The God of the Bible, on the other hand, demands that humans use reason and rational-ity via the LNC to understand His word and understand truth. In this respect, R.C. Sproul said: “Logic is like a policeman that God has put in the brain of human beings, to blow the whistle; to recognize the lie. The whistle blows, and things don’t com-pute. Just like your computer goes whacky when you ask it to be irrational. So, God has built into the human mind a function of rationality that is a test of coher-ency. A test of rationality. And at the very heart of the Christian affirmation, is that. Though the content that we get in the Bible goes far beyond what we can learn, through rational speculation. It’s based on Divine revelation. That Divine revela-tion does not come to us packaged in absurdity. The Word of God is not... irra-tional. It is addressed to creatures who have been given minds that operate ac-cording to these principles.” Bible Passages that Affirm the Law of Non-Contradiction God Cannot Lie Nor Deny Himself “So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchange-able character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us” (Hebrews 6:17-18). “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace” (I Cor 14:33). “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself” (I Timothy 2:13). “in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time be-gan” (Titus 1:2). “Therefore, when I was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or the things I plan, do I plan according to the flesh, that with me there should be Yes, Yes, and No, No? But as God is faithful, our word to you was not Yes and No. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us — by me, Silvanus, and Timothy — was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes. For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us” (II Corinthians 1:17-20). God Made Us in His Image and Expects Us to Think Like Him and Imitate Him “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our like-ness’” (Genesis 1:26). “because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’” (I Pet. 1:16). “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children” (Ephesians 5:1).

Therefore, God Expects Us to Use our Intellect and Built-In Laws of Logic to Understand Him by Understanding His Word “Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:17). “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable ser-vice” (Romans 12:1). Reasonable is from logikos, which is logical or rational. In order for us to even understand God’s word we must use our reasoning and intellect, which implies non-contradictions. If we assume contradictions, then we cannot rationally or logically make sense of any statement. Does the Bible contain mysteries? Certainly. But it doesn’t imply that logical con-tradictions are acceptable, as does Buddhism, which is why this is a good argument for the God of the Bible and against atheism and the eastern religions. The whole of Christ’s teaching and the NT is a testimony to the fact that we are to use logical reasoning to believe and obey Him (Hebrews 5:9).

10 Self-Refuting Statements You Must Know By Sean McDowell “Never use the word never.”- My mom spoke these words to me when I was in high school. Since I was a budding philosopher (and probably a bit sassy), I replied, “Never use never. Didn’t you just use ‘never’?” While her statement was certainly self-refuting, I have since learned to use much more tact! Recognizing self-refuting statements is critical for being a clear thinker. By self-refuting, I mean a claim that is undercut by its own criteria. Perhaps the best way to understand self-refuting statements is to consider some examples. Below are some common examples I have learned from reading, discussing, and studying. It’s amazing how commonly people make claims that simply self-destruct. Taking some time to understand and recognize self-refuting statements will serve you well. In fact, you won't be able to truly evaluate the evidence for Christianity without being able to recognize them. and after you grasp them, take the time to share them with someone else.

• “There is no truth” (If there is no truth, then this statement is false, because there would be at least one truth, namely, that there is no truth).

• “You should not judge” (This statement is a judgment, and so it refutes itself).

• “The scientific method is the only means of knowing truth” (But what about this claim to truth? If this claim were true, then it would be false, since it is a claim to truth that is not known by the scientific method).

• “History is unknowable” (If true, then this very statement would be unknowable. Why? By the time you read this statement and get to the last word, the first two words are already history. Thus, even comprehending this statement implies that at least some things from the past can be known in the present).

F aith is understood in different ways in our culture today. One popular miscon-ception of faith is that it has nothing (or very little) to do with reason or logic. Faith is seen as not something you seek to provide evidence for or view ra-

tionally; you are simply to accept it. This kind of faith sits well in our culture as it praises personal preferences. If faith is not grounded in reason, logic and historic realities, it is simply a personal preference. Thus many believe that faith and blind faith; are the same thing. The Bible, however, never asks for blind faith, it calls for a reasoned faith. This kind of faith is honest about questions & even personal doubts and looks for real answers. It seeks the best possible explanation and then commits to the truth.

• “You should be tolerant of views not your own” (Then what about this view, since it’s different than the view of the one stating it?).

• “Language cannot carry meaning” (If language cannot carry meaning, then what about this claim? Is it meaningful?).

• “Truth cannot be known” (If so, then how does one know this truth claim?).

• “What’s true for you isn’t true for me” (If so, then this claim is only true for the one who makes it and isn’t true for anyone else. If so, then why is the person both-ering to make the claim in the first place since he obviously believes it does ap-ply to others?).

• “You should not force your morals on others” (Is it okay to force this morality on others?)

The following self-statements come to me from my friends; here are some of my favorites.

• “Only stupid people use insults” • “All knowledge is bound by perspective” and “I don’t believe anything”

• “I can’t think of anything to say” • “All truth claims are just attempts for power and control”

• “Everything is meaningless” • “Hate speech isn’t free” • “Doctrine doesn’t matter” and “No creed but Jesus”

T he laws of logic] were placed in our minds by the Creator during the act of creation. We speak because God has spoken. God is not the author of confu-sion, irrationality, or the absurd. Furthermore, his words are meant to be

understood by his creatures, and a necessary condition for his creature's under-standing of those words is that they are intelligible and not irrational.”

Missionary of the Week

Kendra Stanford World Horizons - India

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been back in the States for almost five months! The past few months have been filled with all of the usual ups and downs that come along with re-entry after spending time living in another place. I’m thankful for the process that it’s been, even on the days it hasn’t been easy. I’m able to look back and see how God is using all of the things that didn’t go well according to “my plans” and how God is using each of those detours to con-tinue to guide me forward towards what He has for me to pursue.

Some days that’s still really hard for me. If I had it my way, I would be heading back to India now and throwing myself back into another year of language classes just to be back there, but I know that by being here for a longer time and working with our team in Richmond, God is rebuilding and reshaping me to be better equipped for the plans He has for my future. This time in Richmond is also giving me space to process experi-ences I had in India that I didn’t expect and to process and heal from big, difficult things that have happened along my journey with my community. I’m thankful that we serve a loving and compassionate God who meets us where we are and understands the diffi-culties that we face in life and that He walks with us through those hard days. My time in Richmond has provided me the opportunity to work alongside another couple in our company who are experienced in working in the coffee industry and who are now focusing on training others who want to work with coffee businesses overseas. I’ve started doing some training with them and have had the opportunity to get some experience running coffee events in Richmond with different brew methods. Over the next year, I’ll continue working closely with them for more training and to support their new coffee consulting company, Saint & Rebel Consulting. This upcoming August, my friends I’ll be returning to India with for our new coffee business will come to Rich-mond for a few months to complete coffee training with us here and to finalize our busi-ness plans for getting a shop up and running in India together. I’m so excited to have them coming to work with us here and to have everyone in the Richmond office get to know them as well. I’m currently looking into housing options for my friends and their two daughters for while they are in Richmond as well as looking for a new housing situation for myself. My apartment lease is ending this June and I can’t afford to keep living there. Please be praying that God will provide additional financial support for both me and my friends and that we’ll be able to find the right housing situations in the timeframe that we need them. (Note: Kendra has since signed a lease on an apartment.) Prayer Points:

• Please pray for God to continue to teach me the things I need to learn in this season before returning to the overseas field. Pray that God will continue to show me the areas where I need to grow and trust Him more. Pray that God will continue to show me how to invest my time wisely in this season.

• Please pray for my friends and their new business Saint & Rebel. Please pray that God will provide them with more local clients so that they can support themselves

• Please pray for additional financial support to provide housing for myself and my friends coming in August. Pray that God will connect us with the right people to provide finances and also the right apart-ments to meet the housing needs we have. Thank you all so much for your continued prayers and faithful financial support. I would-n’t be able to be involved in the ministry I’m pursuing if it weren’t for you and your faithful and generous support and I’m extremely thankful for each one of you and your ongoing support!
