Fourth example: Documentation

• Documentation can also become a vicious loop:– documentation tends to get out of date– “do you w ant us to fix the docum entation or deliver softw are?”

– can then become unclear whether tests passed / failed: what is it meant to do?

– no-one reads the documentation any more, so defects in it are no longer detected

– so it gets even further from reality…

loops, and hence biggest-payback improvements• TMM:

– choose between staged & continuous– consider moving selected items between levels, up or down

• TOM:– the “low = 1” scores are w eaknesses (but you m ay be able to

think of others); sim ilarly “high= 5” scores strengths– look for additional symptoms (via SWOT)

Summary

• Traditional process improvement in testing may be improved by building in principles which made Toyota (and others) global successes

• This involves thinking beyond just STAR: need to consider whole lifecycle and quality regime

• You can either fine-tune an existing method (eg TPI, TMM, TOM) or build your own method

• The principles are not proprietary and require no special training

• Focussing on feedback loops is an example of the Pareto principle (80-20)
